What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Our game used to be a ROBLOX game, but due to the changes and planned updates that involve ID verification, we were forced to move to Godot. This project has been in development for about 5 years at this point, and we're extremely dedicated to making a proper story based off of the things we love. We don't expect the game to be the most stable at its first demo or paid launch, as this is still our first project, and we will definitely need some time to develop a fully polished, finished product. We still want to deliver something for our long time fans, though, and any support always helps the project grow!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most likely a year or two. This is our first project, and while we do have a plan, Dark Horizon is still definitely an ambitious project. However, we are dedicated to delivering a well developed story and a polished game.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Dark Horizon in its final state is planned to feature a fully fleshed out campaign with tasks, cutscenes, and in-game snippets of information such as notes and books. We also plan to have modding support to keep our community engaged, allowing things such as custom maps for enhanced replay value.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently we have:
- A map for testing our foliage models, building, and shaders.
- A fully custom-made character system with view bobbing, 3D sounds, and smooth camera movement
- A modular weapon system built to easily support updates and mods.
- Multiple models for irradiated foliage, and some basic gear that can be equipped on your player in the future.
- Models for lootable crates and objects that can be interacted with by your player.
- A main menu, fit with a settings menu to adjust basic graphics settings.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be cheaper in the early access stage compared to the full game, to compensate for any issues the game may have during it's early stages. It's also a nice bonus for supporting the project early.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to open the gates for modding when the game is in a playable state, and even now we heavily focus on community suggestions. Polls are also occasionally run on our Discord server, and we intend to keep doing those until the full release.”

About This Game

DARK HORIZON IS A SINGLE-PLAYER SURVIVAL SHOOTER GAME:

You are trapped in a Russian city bordering Finland, after the Russian government has completely locked down the city and bombed the main bridge leading to the residential sector due to a large-scale conflict. Your squad has been killed, leaving you seriously wounded and completely alone right in the middle of this conflict. In an attempt to control the situation, the Russian authorities have created a special military group: the DWCU (Domestic Warfare Containment Unit). This unit has strict control over the borders of the city with support from the RUAF, killing any escapees on sight to keep information away from the public eye. Despite this, multiple groups of mercenaries, scavengers, and other military groups have been breaking into the city for their own personal goals, causing the environment to become extremely hostile. To make matters worse, a corporation named "Biostratum", which seemingly has ties with the Russian government, has deployed controlled radiation and experimental biohazard zones to secure its facility located in the center of the city. The government has made no effort to rescue any survivors of the conflict and is leaving everybody inside to die. It's very clear that this conflict is just a test for something greater, and you are one of the subjects.

FEATURES:

  • Aggressive AI that dynamically changes goals during combat

  • A dark, gloomy atmosphere with heavy ambience

  • Realistic player and NPC health simulation, with individual categories of status effects for whole-body functions and limbs

  • Accurate depictions of firearms from different time periods and locations

  • Tasks, quests, trading, and general bartering with goods and money

  • Social NPCs that will converse and interact with each other and the player outside of combat

GAMEPLAY:

Dark Horizon draws much of its inspiration from other similar survival games. Base mechanics, such as medical treatment and firearms handling, have been tuned for realism without being needlessly punishing. If you screw up, however, you will face the consequences. For example, severe infection will lead to forced amputation, starvation will lead to extreme weakness and exhaustion, and taking experimental medicine can cause slow organ failure. Your character is far from invincible, but still has the knowledge and willpower to survive.

You progress through the game by accessing specific transition points in the game. These transition points lead you into new areas of the city, with routes that take you to your own bunker. Some routes may also lead to temporary hideouts that have their own individual stashes. Over time, you can upgrade these shelters to better support your needs in the city.

Your life depends on your connections, with greedy traders just barely helping you at the start of your abandonment. But, do some dirty work for them, and you'll start to unlock more of their store and meet new connections of theirs. Do enough work and meet enough people, and you may be able to make it back home... If you're lucky.

This game has elements of an extraction shooter, but does not have a "true" extraction system as seen in more popular games. It is more of a mixing pot of multiple different survival genres, making something unique.
