What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Rails & Rivals is already a complete, playable strategy game, but a game like this only really proves itself once a lot of people are pushing on it at once. Early Access lets us tune the AI and the economy against how real players play instead of how we assume they will, and it lets us add the maps and features the community actually wants. We would rather finish that last stretch out in the open, with people who care about the genre, than guess behind closed doors.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are planning a short, focused Early Access of roughly three to six months. The core game is finished, so this window is about balance, tuning, and adding content rather than building missing systems. That is an honest estimate rather than a hard promise, and if it needs a little longer to get right, we will take the time and say so.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The structure and major systems of the game are already in place today. For 1.0, we plan to add more maps and regions, deeper and stronger AI backed by ongoing balance tuning driven by real match data, and more environment and scenery detail alongside general polish. We also intend to fold in changes that come out of community feedback during Early Access. These are additions on top of a complete game, not missing pieces you are waiting on.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Everything shown on the store page is in the build and playable today. That includes online multiplayer over Steam, single-player against smart AI rivals, and local hot-seat, along with the full economy of building track, delivering goods, industrializing cities, issuing bonds, and upgrading engines. There is an interactive tutorial and a set of hand-crafted maps, all wrapped in a finished Victorian presentation with full audio and localized in fifteen languages. This is a finished game we intend to keep improving, not a demo or a slice of one.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, though the change will be modest. Early Access is priced a little lower as a thank-you to the people who jump in early and help us shape the balance and content. When the game reaches 1.0, we expect a small increase to reflect the extra content and polish added by then, not a large jump.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are active on Discord and the Steam Community forums and discussions, and we read what comes in. Bug reports, balance complaints, and playtest notes feed directly into the AI tuning, the map list, and the roadmap. If you tell us where the game frustrates you or where an opponent plays badly, that is exactly the kind of feedback that changes what we work on next.”

Features

  • Strategic Track Building: Lay track tiles across hex terrain with realistic costs. Plains are cheap, mountains are expensive, and rivers or ridges add crossing fees.

  • Goods & Delivery: Pick up colored goods from cities and deliver them to matching destinations. You can use any railroad on the map. Just remember, every link you cross pays its owner.

  • Bonds & Budget: Need cash fast? Issue bonds. But dividends eat into your income every turn, and each bond costs you points at the end. Every borrowed dollar is a trade-off.

  • Engine Upgrades: Start delivering across one link. Upgrade your engine up to level 8 to reach cities further down the line.

  • Industrialization: Convert gray towns into colorful cities to create new destinations.

  • Tabletop Presentation: 3D board with hex tiles, wooden cubes, and a top-down perspective that looks like a board game on your table.

  • Built-in Maps: Multiple maps based on real-world geography, each with unique city layouts and terrain challenges.

  • Multiplayer: 2-6 players, online or local. Private lobbies, no randoms. Just you and the people you want to bankrupt.

Build Your Own Maps

Rails & Rivals includes a full map editor. Adjust map size, place terrain, draw rivers, set ridges, and drop cities onto a hex grid. Save your map and play on it.

About This Game

Rails & Rivals is a digital railroad board game. Build networks, deliver goods, and compete to become the wealthiest rail company on the map. Three actions per turn, and every action counts.

Build tracks across a hex map. Pick up goods from cities. Deliver them to matching destinations. Earn victory points for every rail link your cargo travels. The rules are simple, the decisions are not.

Terrain affects your budget. Mountains cost more than plains, and crossing rivers or ridges adds extra fees. You can issue bonds for quick cash, but you'll pay dividends every turn. Upgrade your engine to deliver across longer routes. Convert gray towns into colored cities to create new destinations.

A full game plays in 30-60 minutes. Singleplayer against AI, local multiplayer, or online multiplayer for 2-6 players.
