What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Hauntworks is a systems-driven game where the fun comes from chaotic interactions between your undertakers, your guests, and your rooms. This kind of design benefits from real players generating real chaos to find what works, what breaks, and what's funnier than expected.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 12 to 18 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to add more undertakers, guests, room types, resource combinations, and deeper mechanics around recurring investigations and the endgame. Balance, quality-of-life improvements, and new content will be ongoing throughout Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core gameplay loop is in and playable. You can manage a roster of employees, scare and entertain guests to harvest resources, run those resources through crafting chains, and build relationships with supernatural patrons. There's already a lot to discover and a lot that can go wrong in the best way. ”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to raise the price slightly when the game leaves Early Access to reflect the additional content in the full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback will directly shape how this game develops. I plan to be active on the Steam forums and Discord, reading bug reports and balance feedback, and sharing what I'm working on through regular development updates.”

About This Game

You died, or so you thought. Your soul is trapped in a liminal haunted house until you can satisfy five otherworldly entities. They don't want money. They want screams, laughter, vomit, and mind shards from the living.

Orchestrate your operation room by room. Place traps where the flow of guests is heaviest. Chain together scares, laughs, and gore for bonus resources. Where the house falls short, do the scaring yourself with a variety of supernatural spells.

Manage a team of creatures each with a personality, skill set, and needs of their own. They are not easy, but they get the job done. Experiment to find where they are most useful. Oh — and they may occasionally slay a customer.

Five supernatural entities, the Patrons, keep you in Limbo. They each want a specific resource from the living. Fulfill their requests, and they'll help you plan an escape. Or you may just end up liking them enough to stay.

Screams, vomit, laughter, mind shards: all raw material. You must compress them, combine them, and refine them into products of increasing absurdity.
"Accidents" happen, right? Guest deaths attract attention, some of it warranted, but always unwanted. You'll need to dispose of any bodies before the Bureau of Liminality catches on. Otherwise you may have to sweet talk them. How you handle the Bureau determines how much time you have.
