About This Game

What begins as a job... becomes a reckoning.

Set against the year 2000, The Assessment places players in the role of an archaeologist summoned under mysterious circumstances to evaluate a long-abandoned castle in rural Japan. The task is simple: assess the structural integrity of Himitsu Castle and determine whether it should be restored or erased from history.

There’s only one condition.

You must do it tonight.

A Castle That Refuses to Be Forgotten

Himitsu Castle was never meant to endure. Built during the Sengoku period under the obsessive command of Goro Oda, the structure was plagued by relentless catastrophe—floods, earthquakes, and storms. Each disaster more violent than the last. Yet construction never ceased.

Desperation took root.

Workers disappeared. Promises were broken. And a horrific ancient practice began to take place.

Now, centuries later, the castle remains. Waiting.

Two Timelines. One Truth.

As you explore the isolated halls, your role as an assessor becomes increasingly uncertain. The castle does not merely exist - it remembers.

Fragments of the past bleed into the present.

You will step beyond your own time, reliving moments from the past, discovering the lives of those trapped within its walls, and uncovering the cost of the creator's obsession.

Every discovery brings you closer to a final decision:

Should this place be preserved… or destroyed?

Atmosphere Over Action

The Assessment is a tightly focused psychological horror experience that emphasizes tension, environment, and narrative over traditional combat.

  • Investigate parts of the haunted castle steeped in history

  • Use spiritual tools to influence unseen forces

  • Piece together a fragmented story across time and memory

  • Experience a concise, impactful narrative in third or first person view

Rather than overwhelming players with mechanics, the game builds dread through silence and space - where every creaking floorboard and distant sound carries meaning.

A Personal, Unsettling Journey

This is not a story about survival. It’s about judgment.

You were hired to assess the castle.

But as the line between past and present dissolves, one question becomes unavoidable:

Are you evaluating the castle... or is it evaluating you?

Steam Deck

The game is being tested on the Steam Deck to ensure it runs at 60FPS at full resolution.
