What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Shadows of Thornkeep is developed by a solo creator. Early Access serves as a soft launch, giving me the chance to gather valuable feedback and refine the game before full release. For my previous projects, the Early Access period proved essential, as community input greatly shaped the final product and I hope to carry that same approach forward here.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I expect Shadows of Thornkeep to remain in Early Access for about 3–4 months. The base game is nearly finished, but I want enough time to test thoroughly, fix bugs, and polish the interface before full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The goal for the full release is to be more polished and stable, with most major issues addressed. I also plan to add endgame content beyond what’s available in Early Access. One of the first planned updates after launch may include opening the mysterious metal gate in the Thornkeep basecamp, leading to a new hub area with the Tree of Blood and additional vendors. The Tree of Blood is intended to serve as a portal to other dimensions, providing fresh challenges and new ways to progress beyond the base game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core game is complete and playable. The Thornkeep camp serves as the main hub, and three expedition areas are available: the Veiled Thicket, the Black Woods, and the Swamps. Each area includes its own underground levels, unique monsters, and loot to discover. Players can currently expect around 10 hours of gameplay, with turn-based combat, grid-based exploration, party and camp management, and loot-driven progression all fully implemented.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, price will increase by about 30%.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“As with my previous games, I’ll be closely listening to community feedback and suggestions. Watching players on YouTube or Twitch is especially helpful for polishing the interface and spotting rough edges I might miss on my own. I believe I have a solid track record here as community input played a big role in fine tuning both Blasted Road Terror and Dreadborne Drifters, and I want to continue that same approach with Shadows of Thornkeep.”

About This Game

Awakening

You wake in an unfamiliar place. The sky is heavy and grey, the ground soaked, and the roar of the ocean echoes behind you. Rising to your feet, you notice a dark figure ahead, a red lantern swaying in its grasp. It is no man, more bone than flesh , yet it does not strike you as hostile. As you draw closer, the figure offers you the souls of the damned. Spirits to be reanimated and bound to your will. These lost souls are granted one final chance to fight, redeem themselves, and escape this forsaken place, forever lashed by unending rain and wind.

About the game

Shadows of Thornkeep is a dark fantasy dungeon crawler where you guide a band of lost souls on expeditions across a mysterious island. Featuring grid-based exploration and turn-based combat, the game blends rogue-lite elements with traditional dungeon crawling. Death is not permanent — your heroes have already fallen once — but preparing them for the next journey always comes at a cost. Manage your party and camp, gather loot, and face relentless horrors, all brought to life in handcrafted pixel art.

  • Grid-based dungeon crawling – explore twisted halls and cursed landscapes in classic step by step fashion.

  • Turn-based combat – command your party in tactical battles where every action matters, no real time nonsense sidesteping around monsters to avoid beign hit.

  • Rogue-lite elements – death is not the end, but revival comes with a price.

  • Party & camp management – prepare your lost souls, tend to their needs, and keep them fit for the next expedition.

  • Loot-centric progression – discover powerful gear, cursed relics, and resources to survive the island’s trials.

  • Handcrafted pixel art – dark atmosphere brought to life with detailed, pixel by pixel crafted sprites.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

AI helped me a lot when moving from GML to C#. The music in the Early Access version is also AI generated this is just a free-time hobby project and I mainly needed some semi ambient tracks to set the mood. Later on, I plan to purchase proper human made tracks before the full release. Towards the end of development I also used an AI plugin for Aseprite to speed up animating some of my own hand drawn sprites, but the very vast majority of the graphics was made by me, handcrafted, pixel by pixel.
