Meet the Liveries

Lean Green: The modern-day Great Western Railway painted their first HST in their nostalgic green livery in 2015, and to mark the launch, embossed 3D GWR logos initially adorned each bodyside. As the livery propagated across the fleet, this was eventually swapped with a sleeker vinyl equivalent.

43002: 2016 marked the 40th anniversary of the HST, a momentous occasion for enthusiasts old and new. To celebrate this, GWR, who owned the oldest production power car, painted it back into its original and iconic InterCity 125 livery, gave it its original Class 253 number on the nose, and named it after Sir Kenneth Grange, the HST’s designer. 43002 is now preserved as part of the National Collection.

43185: GWR deemed that just the one celebratory livery wasn’t enough, and rightly so, as the HST’s history spans many eras, each as fondly remembered as the rest. Not long after 002 went blue, 43185 joined the ranks, this time carrying the craftmanship InterCity Swallow livery, and was aptly named, “Great Western”.

43093: 2017 would be another year for marking history, and making steps into the future. As newer Class 800s started testing, the home of the HSTs, Old Oak Common Depot, was celebrating its 111th anniversary. To mark the occasion, at a special open day, a new livery was unveiled, carrying a cavalcade of casted shadows depicting motive power of the Western Region, with the loco itself being named after its depot, which would eventually be demolished as the HSTs left London duty, to make way for High Speed 2.

43187 & 188: It’s not just England that GWR serves, with many trains from London and the West Country also crossing the border into Wales each day. In 2016, the Severn Tunnel was reopened after lengthy repair works, and to mark the occasion, a new London to Swansea service was named “Y Cymro” or “The Welshman”. A pair of power cars were named as such, and proudly display the Welsh Dragon on each side.

43188…again: Fast forward to 2018, and each of the dragon pair are still in sterling service. 188 however would see a change for the better, with the dragon receiving a partial gold accent, and additionally being named after Geraint Thomas, a Welsh cyclist, who won the Tour de France that year, bringing home the gold for Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

Stand-down Service: As the GWR HSTs retired, both from mainline use and from their final West Country use, off-lease HSTs would be transported for use Scotland, exported elsewhere, or brought into preservation. As each power car made its final departure, they were often stripped of branding, leaving bare green sides as the final sight for many as they left the Western region.

About This Content

From ’76 to ’25, the famed High Speed Train ruled the Western Region from Capital to Coast, and in their waning years, carried special schemes as they bowed out of mainline duty and shuttled across the English Riviera. In Train Sim World, relive the final days of the HSTs in England with the GWR HST Farewell Pack from Grump Dog Games!

The HST is a true veteran of the rails, from its stand-out design, record-braking speeds to its multi-million miles in service. Having operated for nearly 50 years however, their time in England has come to pass, with the likes of the Class 802 taking their place.

In Train Sim World 6, Grump Dog Games’ GWR HST Farewell Pack celebrates the High Speed Train and adds additional gameplay across Great Western Express Remastered and Riviera Line; play a part in the unveiling of 43093 at the Old Oak Common open depot day, be the first driver who’s taking 43002 into Paddington for the first time, and pick your poison as you choose which of the final London departures you wish to drive. Down in the West Country, operate additional traffic to support the local Airshow, help out a stranded train in need, and recreate the very last HST display at Plymouth before their final departure.
