What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to involve the community and build your feedback into the game. We are a small, independent team with limited resources developing a huge, open-ended RPG. The Lantern of the Laughless Saint shares the same underlying toolkit and gameplay we've been building for its successor "The Holy Fool" and any improvements we make for The Holy Fool will be pushed as an update for The Lantern.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The Early Access period is planned to last for less than a year. During Early Access we are aiming to release updates every 1-2 weeks. We will continue to support and update the game with free content and improvements based on community feedback after this period.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full release will include substantial amounts of new content, including new enemies, areas, equipment, and quests. Our primary area of focus will be polish. Existing mechanics, such as spell crafting, alchemy, and fishing will be fleshed-out and expanded upon. ”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is a fully playable, open-world experience with both single and multi-player support. It features 50+ quests, 60+ unique enemies, over 100 equippable items, fully featured spell crafting and alchemy systems, full co-op support, and the main quest fully completable. We project that a completionist playthrough without consulting guides will take an average player upwards of 30-40 hours.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We may raise the price slightly after the Early Access period is complete.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout the entire development process so far, we have been heavily involving the community via our very active Discord server where we host public playtests and share our progress. We want to focus our efforts on the areas that the players love the most, and the best way to do that is to get players’ hands on the game and listen to their feedback. Player feedback will be the primary guiding force during the Early Access period, and we are planning additional features such as mod support in the future. We
encourage all Early Access players to reach out in Discord and on the Steam
community page so we can hear all the suggestions, bug reports, and feedback to make The Lantern of the Laughless Saint the best game it could be, together.”

About This Game

Lured in by shared nightmares, madmen travel to a remote island crowned by a silent Tower. No one remembers the journey.

The Lantern of the Laughless Saint is an open world RPG built around exploration and connection. You learn the land by walking it, following rumors, reading scraps of burned history, and meeting lost souls who wandered to the ends of the Earth, following the same feverish dream of a light buried beneath the Tower.

Somewhere in the depths is a theater with an empty stage, waiting for an audience. As you repair or ruin the lives of the island's inhabitants, the phantoms they leave behind take their seats in the audience. The more seats you fill, the more the island listens, and the greater the applause for your final act.

And if you don’t want to descend alone, you don’t have to. The entire game is fully playable in co-op: explore the island together, delve into the depths for treasures, and make the choices that will decide the fate of everyone on the island, and beyond...

What makes it different

  • A wild, ancient island to explore
Follow leads, find shortcuts into the Tower, stumble into side stories, and piece together what is real and what is mere delusion.

  • Open Ended
Most quests have multiple resolutions. Mercy, violence, compromise, deceit.

  • A large cast of bizarre characters
Many strange folk find their home on the island. A giant toad learning to read. An ancient skeleton who just wants to swim. A musician from a faraway land hunts for something precious. Everyone has a theory for why you’re here. None of them agree.

  • The Amphitheater

Your choices change the world. Treat others with kindness and generosity, and a trusted friend will take their seat in your audience. Fail or abuse them, and something darker takes their place. The House fills either way.

  • Visceral Combat with multiple weapon types
    Punchy combat against strange horrors

  • Full co-op
Play the whole game together. Explore the world, share the spoils, and decide who you will become, because the consequences belong to all of you.

The Tower does not call the whole. It calls the broken, the wanting.
Fill the seats. Start the performance. Find out what is buried at the bottom of the well.
