What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Red Rust Pioneers is a co-operative frontier survival game built around shared experiences, and we believe the best version of this game can only be made alongside the players who love it.

We have a clear creative vision for what Red Rust Pioneers will become, but survival games live and die by how their systems feel in players' hands. The balance between challenge and reward, the rhythm of daily frontier life, the pacing of the journey west, the moments that make you want to call your friends over to play: these are things we can design for, but they're perfected through real player feedback.

Our community has already been shaping the game through monthly development updates, Discord discussions, and direct feedback since we first announced the project. Early Access is the natural next step in that relationship. We want our players at the campfire with us, helping us build the best frontier survival experience we can.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan for Red Rust Pioneers to be in Early Access for approximately 18 to 24 months. Our development roadmap is structured around regular content updates, and we'll share that roadmap publicly so players always know what we're working on and what's coming next.

As a studio with over 23 years of professional game development experience and more than 150 shipped projects, we understand the importance of delivering on our commitments. We've maintained a monthly development update cadence since the game was first announced, and that consistency will continue throughout Early Access and beyond.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early Access marks the first major step into the world of Red Rust Pioneers, but the road ahead is intentionally ambitious.

The game enters Early Access with many of the foundations of the experience already in place: the Equilibrium Engine driving survival and environmental systems, frontier building mechanics, exploration, role specialisation, and the wider feeling of surviving and building a life within a vast untamed wilderness. Over the course of Early Access, we plan to steadily expand both the world itself and the depth of the experience surrounding it.

Expanding the frontier world.
We plan to introduce new regions, environments, and points of interest across the wilderness, giving players more reasons to explore and more variety in the landscapes they travel through.

Deepening crafting and building.
We plan to expand the crafting system with new recipes, workstation types, and the ability to create increasingly sophisticated frontier equipment and structures. Building will grow to include more construction options, interior furnishing, and expanded homestead infrastructure.

Growing the wildlife and ecosystem.
We plan to add new animal species, behaviours, and encounters across the frontier, making the wilderness feel more alive and creating new challenges and opportunities for hunters, ranchers, and explorers alike.
Enriching co-op and progression.
We plan to deepen the role specialisation system, expand the perk trees, and introduce new ways for players to contribute to their group and develop their character's identity on the frontier.

Evolving the Equilibrium Engine.
We plan to expand the interconnected survival systems with new environmental conditions, seasonal events, and dynamic situations that keep frontier life feeling fresh and meaningful.

An evolving frontier narrative.
We plan to gradually introduce players to a larger frontier story filled with mystery, conflict, discovery, and shifting power across the region. While we're intentionally keeping many narrative details closely guarded to preserve surprises and player discovery, the long-term ambition is for Red Rust Pioneers to grow beyond a survival sandbox into a living western frontier journey where player stories unfold alongside a broader evolving world.

Refining performance and polish.
We plan to continuously improve visual quality, optimisation, and overall polish throughout Early Access, taking advantage of real-world performance data from a wider range of hardware configurations than internal testing alone can provide.

A world that grows with its community.
The frontier setting gives Red Rust Pioneers a unique opportunity to evolve alongside the wider history of the American West itself. Beginning in 1842 places players at the dawn of the frontier era, when technology was limited, settlements were sparse, and the wilderness still felt vast and untamed. Over time, we envision the world gradually advancing through updates and expansions inspired by later frontier history, introducing new technologies, industries, transport, and opportunities as the frontier changes around the player. We see Red Rust Pioneers as a long-term shared journey rather than a static product, and Early Access is the first step into that world, not the final destination.

Our update plans will also be shaped by community feedback. Some of the best ideas will come from the players who live in this world every day, and we want to make sure the development roadmap reflects what matters most to our community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Red Rust Pioneers enters Early Access with the core systems and gameplay needed to deliver a compelling frontier survival experience:

Exploration.
A large open-world frontier environment to explore, with dynamic weather, a full seasonal cycle, and a day/night rhythm that shapes how you experience the wilderness.

Building.
Construct frontier homesteads with authentic log construction, wooden foundations, porches, and pitched roofs. Lay out your camp with functional workstations, storage, and gathering spaces as you carve out your place on the frontier.

Crafting and survival.
A deep crafting system spanning campfire cooking, workbench crafting, and specialised workstations. The Equilibrium Engine ties weather, temperature, hunger, exhaustion, shelter, and preparation together into interconnected survival systems that reward planning and cooperation.

Hunting, foraging, fishing, and farming.
Gather resources from the wilderness through multiple gameplay systems, each with their own mechanics and seasonal rhythms.

Co-operative multiplayer.
Play solo or with up to four players in online co-op. Every system is designed to work in both modes, with co-op play encouraging natural role specialisation and shared frontier life.

MetaHuman characters.
Photorealistic player characters and NPCs built using Unreal Engine 5.7's MetaHuman technology.

The Pioneer's Journal.
Your in-game companion for recipes, building blueprints, seasonal information, and a growing reference that expands as you progress through the frontier.

As with any Early Access title, there are likely to be bugs present, and with larger updates there is a possibility that save games may become incompatible. We will always communicate clearly in advance when this is likely to happen.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price as we add major content updates and new features throughout Early Access. Players who support us early will get the best value, and every price increase will coincide with a significant addition to the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community involvement isn't just part of our Early Access plan. It's been part of our development process since day one.

Since announcing Red Rust Pioneers, we've published monthly development updates, run community polls, gathered feedback through our Discord, and incorporated player suggestions directly into our development priorities. Features like the expanded cabin construction system became a major focus specifically because of community enthusiasm and feedback.

During Early Access, we plan to deepen that relationship further. We'll share our development roadmap publicly, maintain our regular update cadence, and actively seek player feedback on new features, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements. Our Trail Guide programme gives dedicated community members early access to upcoming changes, and their feedback directly shapes what we ship.

We built Red Rust Pioneers because we believe games can bring people together in powerful ways. That belief extends to how we make the game itself. We want our players around the campfire with us, shaping this experience together.”

About This Game

The year is 1842. Behind you, the life you knew. Ahead, the western frontier - miles of open sky, untouched valleys and adventure. Out here, the land is rich, the rivers run clean, and what you make of it is yours to keep. All you need is the frontier ahead, friends beside you, and the will to build a new life from the ground up.

The Wild West won't make it easy. But you didn't come out here for easy.

  • Build your homestead from a canvas tent to a ranch on the western frontier

  • Travel by wagon, break camp and push further west to settle new land

  • Hunt, fish and farm to feed yourself and your companions through every season

  • Craft tools, weapons and gear to carve out your place on the frontier

  • Survive blistering summers, violent storms and bitter frontier winters

  • Explore a vast open world alive with beauty, danger and discovery

  • Play solo or with up to 4 players in co-op

Red Rust Pioneers brings together the deep survival crafting and base building of Valheim and The Forest with the rugged beauty of Red Dead Redemption 2, set on a living, breathing western frontier.

BUILD & SETTLE

You didn't come west just to survive.

You came to build something. A canvas tent becomes a cabin. A cabin becomes a homestead. A homestead becomes a ranch. With your own two hands and the hands of your companions, you'll build a new life in the wide open wilderness of Red Rust Valley, one timber frame and campfire at a time.

The frontier is free and it's waiting. What you make of it is up to you.

EXPLORE & ADVENTURE

The wilderness beyond your door is yours to explore.

Your homestead is your anchor. When you're ready, load your wagon, break camp, and ride out into the wilderness. New country reveals fresh resources, hidden valleys and breathtaking vistas you'll want to share with your companions. And when your saddlebags are full and the sun is dropping, there's nothing quite like the ride home, wagon loaded, ready to build something new.

Every expedition brings something back to make your homestead a little stronger, a little larger, a little more your own.

LIVE OFF THE LAND

But first, you have to survive it.

The Wild West doesn't care about your plans. Battle hunger, thirst, and the unforgiving elements as you forage, hunt, and fish to stay alive. Farm and harvest crops to build a self-sufficient camp. Venture into the mountains for the resources that'll give you an edge.

Master the seasons. Scorching summers, violent rainstorms and freezing winters stand between you and the life you're building. Respect the frontier, and it will reward you. Defy it, and the west has a long memory.

GOOD COMPANY

The trail is better with friends beside you.

Invite up to three friends into your world - split the work and share the adventure. Ride out into the wilderness, set up camp beneath the stars, and build a homestead and new life together. Red Rust Pioneers is built from the ground up for co-operative play, and the frontier is a better place for it.

The frontier is waiting. Your story starts here.
