What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“While Pact or Peril is still in development it is still a fully playable game. We are using Early Access to get information back from players on what needs to be improved as well. Where this game has a single player mode it is an online competitive strategy game and the more people we can have testing and playing it the faster we can identify problems and fine tune our systems. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Three to Six Months. We plan to release once all artwork and visual assets are finished, and full functionality has been fully tested.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to have the full version include a fully polished version of the game complete with amazing cohesive artwork, Tutorials, Multiplayer Ranked, In-Game Store, and more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The base game core mechanics are fully playable in single and multiplayer. We are pushing updates often to make improvements, optimization and fix bugs when we find them. It is playable online and with friend but while using an ugly unrefined hodgepodge UI. ”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will be Free after early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Would love to hear and implement QoL improvements, changes for game mechanics, and hear ideas for maps, features, and other game mode possibilities. email us at support@grumpygiraffe.net or submit a bug report within the game, or post in the Discord.”

About This Game

The world is a map. Your friends are pretenders. The dice are unreliable.

Pact or Peril is a turn-based strategy game of conquest, alliances, and well-timed betrayal for 1 to 8 players — inspired by the classic dice-and-territory wargames, then sharpened with portals, pacts, firestorms, and a full map editor.

Build an army, claim the map, and turn whoever's sitting next to you into the next big problem.

HOW IT PLAYS
Each match is a fight for control of a territory map. On your turn you move through three phases:

  • Deploy — collect reinforcements (the more territories and fully-owned regions you hold, the more troops you get) and place them where the next fight will be.

  • Attack — pick a border and roll. Attackers roll up to three dice, the defender rolls to hold, and the higher dice win each pairing (ties favor the defender). Push your luck one roll at a time, or commit everything in a single Full Send barrage.

  • Fortify — shift troops between your territories to shore up the line, then pass the turn.

Win by conquering the entire map (World Domination) — or, in Capital Conquest mode, by capturing and holding every player's capital at once. Last empire standing takes it.

Between every move there's a choice: pick a fight, dodge one, or hand someone a knife they didn't see coming.

CONQUER THE MAP

  • Take territories one border at a time; hold whole regions for a passive troop bonus every turn.

  • Collect resource cards (Food, Ammunition, Weapon) and trade matched sets for a burst of bonus armies.

  • Roll up to 3 attack dice, or Full Send a barrage to settle a fight in one swing.

FORGE PACTS. BREAK THEM.

  • Make pacts with other players to share a border in peace — a private handshake, not a public announcement.

  • Decide when "ally" turns back into "target." There's always a knife in the deck.

MODES FOR EVERYONE

  • Casual — quick online games with friends or strangers, 2 to 8 players, free-for-all or in teams.

  • Ranked — climb from Bronze to Grandmaster and reach Legend across seasonal ranked ladders.

  • Single-Player — practice against AI opponents from Easy to Brutal.

  • Teams — coordinate, share the map, and win together.

TACTICAL CURVEBALLS

  • Fog of War hides enemy troop counts behind the clouds.

  • Portals open shortcuts across the map — and chaotic portals fling armies somewhere unexpected.

  • Firestorms burn random territories into impassable ash.

  • Tune dice rules, card economy, turn timers, portal/firestorm counts, and more before the match.

YOUR MAPS, YOUR RULES

  • A full Map Editor ships with the game: paint territories, draw regions, wire up connections, set bonuses.

  • Share your maps and play your friends' creations.

  • Match Replays — re-watch the games you should have won.

Made by Grumpy Giraffe. A small studio. A loud table. One promise: nobody who promises to stop attacking you actually will.
