What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want your support and feedback! We are a small team with big ambitions. We want to gather community feedback and refine our game to match what our players want from our unusual cross-section of "Cozy" and "Spooky" themes. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access for approximately 1 year. We want everyone to be able to experience the full v1.0 release by Halloween 2026.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We expect that the full version of Ghost Hunter Simulator to include a total of 16 levels to explore at v1.0 - each level with unique quest lines to discover the history of the location and the spirits that haunt those locations.

We also intend to expand the number of tools that you can take with you on your ghost hunting adventures, add more in-game social media mechanics to grow your ghost hunting empire, and expand how our ghosts are able to interact with various objects throughout the levels.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Current Alpha Features:
-8 playable levels
-9 tools
-21 ghosts
-6 in-game Social Media platforms to tailor your evidence towards

We hope to Release these Features with v1.0:
-16 playable levels
-40 tools
-40 ghosts
-12 in-game Social Media platforms

We are currently in Alpha and are working our way to Beta.

Alpha means that every feature is in the game - even if it is only a skeletal system (in other words, systems will have bugs and will not have all the content of the final product represented). For example, we currently have 9 ghost hunting tools that are functional and usable in the Early Access version, but we have plans for another 31 tools that don't yet work in the game, but we hope to have functional for the full release of version 1.0.

In order to get to Beta, every feature must be present and at least have placeholder content present (so, every level will have several quests, but the quests may include placeholder text and objectives). To continue the example of the ghost hunting tools, once we have placeholder assets in the game for all 40 tools that are planned, that will be considered in a beta state, even if the tools don't all work perfectly and still need some polish, but all of the tools would be visible in the in-game store and have basic functionality in game play.

After we've hit Beta, then the focus switches to filling out placeholder content and polishing up the existing features until we're ready to release!

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be discounted during Early Access. When we leave Early Access, the discount will be removed and the game will be available at full price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Ghost Hunter Simulator is made for people to enjoy the game. It is very important to us to listen to and work with our community to deliver a game that all of our fans can enjoy. We will be gathering feedback from the Steam forums, our social media communities, and our official Discord server in order to ensure that everyone who *wants* to enjoy Ghost Hunter Simulator will be able to do so.”

About This Game

*** Ghost Hunter Simulator is under active development. All screen shots and videos are taken from an Early Access version of the game. ***

Are Ghosts Real?

Have you ever wanted to explore spooky locations and hunt for ghosts?

In Ghost Hunter Simulator, the player takes on the role of an aspiring ghost hunter with the goal of building their social media empire - as the true believer who finally found proof or the skeptic who exposes all those other charlatans.

Ghost Hunter Simulator is not a horror game, but rather “Cozy Spooky.” Think Haunted Mansion, not Haunting of Hill House. There are times where the game gets spooky, but there are no jump scares, no gore, and no immediate danger to the player.

Players will spend much of their time exploring allegedly haunted locations and gathering evidence of the paranormal, as well as learning the lore and history of the location. Ghost Hunter Simulator uses a first-person view and focuses on using real world ghost hunting tools to collect evidence - either that full-body apparition photo that proves to the world, once and for all, that ghosts or real, or a video clip debunking the local ghost story by showing that the curtains only move because there's an air vent across the room that kicks on.

Once the Ghost Hunter has gathered their evidence, the next step is to tell everyone. Using a simple grid-based puzzle mini-game, the player will sort and tag their evidence (e.g. "spooky", or "funny", or "EVP", or even "prank") to post on various in-game social sites - like BooTube or Deaddit. Follow the trends and your audience to earn fame and fortune - which coincidentally allows you to ghost hunt at more famous locations with cooler equipment!

The locations visited in Ghost Hunter Simulator range from real world locations you COULD go investigate if you had the proper equipment and travel arrangements to fictional locations from our favorite spooky media. Explore in safety, from the comfort of your own home, and find evidence (or lack thereof) of ghosts!

Ghost Hunter Simulator is currently in development by Ryan and Kim Steiner, two former AAA developers, along with support from Matt Fossen, Ross Sigworth, and John Barnes. Ghost Hunter Simulator will be updated at regular intervals - not only for bug fixing, balancing, expanding systems, and such, but also adding in new levels and places to explore.

Features:

  • Ghost Hunter Simulator is a simulation game that puts you in the role of a modern-day ghost hunter.

  • First-person perspective exploration of allegedly haunted locations - both historical and fictional.

  • Use real-world ghost hunting equipment to gather evidence of hauntings - or to debunk them!

  • Geometric puzzle gameplay allows the player to combine the evidence they have gathered into social media submissions.

  • Organize and manage your social media empire by gaining fame, earning money, and growing your operation until YOU are the ultimate authority on all things spooky!

  • Ghost Hunter Simulator is NOT a horror game. There are no jump scares and no imminent danger.

  • Early Access includes 8 Levels. We expect to have a total of 16 levels available with the release of version 1.0.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Ghost Hunter Simulator tells the stories of many ghosts.

In order to tell these stories, we will often discuss how the person died in order to leave a ghost behind. Sometimes these topics can be intense and can include descriptions of murder, violent accidents, drug/alcohol abuse, and self-harm. In addition, we also describe some of the less-than-pleasant living conditions that these people existed in before they became ghosts, such as familial abuse, mistreatment due to social stigmas, and people generally being unpleasant to their fellow human beings.

All of the Mature Content that is present in Ghost Hunter Simulator is presented as textual backstory and none of these scenarios are ever depicted on screen.
