Start with a small sapling and watch it grow. Will it be a plum, birch or a more traditional pine? Trim the branches, guide them with wires and or just leave it be and admire it quietly. Most importantly, don't rush. You have time.

About This Game

A small game about growing a Penjing, stylized as living ink painting. Start with a small tree and watch it grow, prune, pinch, wire and carve it's branches to give it the shape that suits it the most.

Choose how fast the time passes

Will you opt for a slow passage, so that you can adjust everything or will you let years pass in a blink?

Use a wide range of tools

  • Prune: cut a branch back so the buds below it wake

  • Pinch: nip soft tips to make the tree grow denser

  • Wire: shape the tree

  • Strip the leaves: the second wave grows back smaller and finer

  • Carve the bark to suggest the age and hardship

  • Repot: lift the tree, trim the roots and replace the soil to allow the tree to continue growing.

The tree will adjust, to a limit

Cut too much and the tree will need to recover for few years. Keep the branches in shade and they will eventually wither so be mindful with your cuts.

Select a location:

Will you keep your tree in the open, or will you have it sheltered? Game computes both the path of the sun and the effect the winds have on your plant.

Keep and share:

Keep the trees for yourself, or send them as a gift or just showcase them through a poem. Keep the memory of the old trees in album, export the images in a wallpaper quality (up to 4K).

Five species:

Traditional plum, hardy birch, majestic pine, resilient willow and rugged juniper.

Guqin

Listen to the solo guqin (古琴) pieces from qin handbooks of 1425 to 1876, played by Charlie Huang.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Mojing's artwork is painted with a physics-based ink-brush simulator (Expresii), driven by painting programs written with the help of an AI coding assistant (Claude). I also use 3D models generated with code, with textures from Material Maker and Poly Haven, and custom shaders. All these parts were written in an AI-assisted manner.

I didn't use any image, music or voice generators: the textures and the few scanned 3D models are CC0 works made by people, the music is human guqin recordings, and the font skeletons come from human-drawn typefaces. Every asset's source and licence is documented.

The game generates no AI content while you play.
