Why Early Access?

“Tough Love Arena is an indie fighting game being developed by two people. We launched the website version as a public beta in Early 2021, and have been adding features and new animation ever since.

Tough Love Arena is already a functioning and popular fighting game with appearances at both offline and online tournaments and events through the USA. We have a core cast of characters shaped by years of play-testing and tournament results. Our online features and netcode are on par with AAA titles in the genre. However, despite all these accomplishments, the game isn't quite complete yet. Some animation is still in a rough draft-like state that's playable, but not up to our standards. The multiplayer scene is healthy and strong, but we don't have much in the way of single player content. This is why we are Early Access - we've got the important stuff done first, and now we just need to fill in a few gaps.

As we continue to polish the game balance and ramp out new features, we are eager to hear feedback from Steam users! What things work well, what's surprising, what's missing. And as a game originally based in the browser, we know the transition to an offline desktop application will have a few bumps in the road. Please join us on the journey and help shape the future of the game!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Given our current rate of production, Tough Love Arena should be out of early access by August 2026.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Tough Love Arena will leave Early Access once we have finished the following:

- Single player "Arcade Mode"
- Expanding the tutorials and combo trials
- Polishing animation for Garlic
- Polishing background art”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Tough Love Arena has many of the standard features of a modern fighting game:

- Local multiplayer versus
- Online ranked, casual, and lobbies with rollback netcode
- Training mode with frame data, hitbox display, and recording features
- Tutorials for basics, system mechanics, and individual characters
- Combo trials
- Replays you can share with just a URL
- Limited mod support”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Price will not change when we leave early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have an official Discord where fans report bugs and request features, many of which we end up incorporating. We host a "State of the Game" development update once a month, where people can talk directly to the dev team during Q&A.
