What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“With over 1,800 Kickstarter backers already playtesting Macabre, we’ve seen just how vital community feedback is—especially for a game built on complex AI, procedural maps, and randomised objectives.

Early Access lets us open the gates wider. More players means more data, better feedback, and stronger systems. The more people we have in the Rift, the better—and scarier—the experience becomes.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We’re planning to stay in Early Access for up to two years. That gives us time to expand the game with new maps, monsters, mechanics, and progression—while continuing to polish what’s already there based on real-world feedback. The full version will be the best version, built side-by-side with the community.

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

Macabre is designed to grow, and the full version will build on everything we’ve laid down so far—new content, deeper systems, and more ways to play. Here’s what’s ahead:

- Crafting system for tools and equipment
- Dismemberment for more visceral monster encounters
- Roaming animals to increase tension and immersion
- Non-verbal communication like hand signals and emotes
- New procedural maps in atmospheric locations around the world
- Additional monster forms with unique behaviours and abilities
- More reactive AI and world systems
- Expanded tasks and objectives from Banjo
- Richer lore and narrative threads to uncover
- …and more, shaped by you

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build includes a fully playable map with procedural layouts, randomised objectives, and adaptive AI that scales based on your team size. Core systems—like stealth, progression systems, Objectives, monster encounters, proximity chat and online co-op—are already in and being improved daily with player feedback.

Thanks to our Kickstarter backers and testers, we’ve had thousands of hours of hands-on data. The result? A tense, replayable horror experience that keeps getting sharper with each update.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We’ve priced Macabre accessibly during Early Access to make it easier for more players to jump in, explore the game, and share feedback. There’s still plenty to refine and expand—but even now, it offers a deep, replayable experience we’re proud of.

As the game grows, the price will reflect the added content and improvements—but everyone who joins us early will have access to all of it as we continue developing Macabre together.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We’ve been community-led from day one. Player feedback has already shaped everything from monster behaviours to map design, and we’re constantly refining the game with each new update.

As a small indie team founded by two lifelong gamers, we believe transparency is everything. That’s why we put our names and faces to the project—and why we share so much of the journey openly through our Discord and Kickstarter.

Whether you want to test, chat, lurk—or just see where Macabre goes next—we’d love to have you along for the ride.”

About This Game

Macabre is a unique gaming experience that blends elements of stealth, horror, and cooperative gameplay into a genre we call 'Stealth Extraction Horror'.

You will be plunged into an unstable time Rift, where you and your friends must navigate infinite timelines, including those of other players.

The goal? To extract valuable resources and escape, all while avoiding detection by the horrifying shape-shifting terror that lurks within the Rift.

There's only one word for it... MACABRE!

Want to stay up-to-date and help build a strong community of Rift enthusiasts? Follow our socials and add "Macabre" to your Steam Wishlist.

Your engagement is crucial—it helps spread the word, attracts more supporters, and signals to platforms a strong interest in our game.

Every follow, like, and wishlist addition is a step towards making "Macabre" a terrifying success!

You might've caught a glimpse of our trailer online or seen us featured at events like the PC Gaming Show, Realms Deep, or SXSW Sydney. The overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the community have been both humbling and inspiring. Now, we're gearing up to elevate Macabre to new heights!

You won't be able to shoot your way out of this nightmare. Macabre is all about stealth, cunning, and wit. Choose to work together and face Macabre as one, or betray your teammates and claim the lion's share of the loot.

Just remember, Macabre likes to prey on those who stray from the pack!

Luckily, you meet a fellow Rift enthusiast named Banjo, who survived using his ingenious inventions. By far, the most important is the Atomic Space Shifter, which allows you to Bleed crafting items like Fragments and Artefacts from any timeline to yours.

The Artefacts in each timeline will determine Macabre's abilities, so you'll need to equip the right gear to deal with each unique threat. Before each session, you'll have the opportunity to choose your equipment and customise your character.

When you first encounter a Macabre, it assesses your presence, determining whether you are a threat or potential prey. As Macabre becomes more familiar with you, It may become more aggressive, testing your resilience and adaptability.

If you repeatedly rely on the same survival strategy, Macabre will adapt and deploy alternate behaviours.

You'll need to employ perfectly timed distractions, stuns, or even sacrifices to navigate encounters with the creatures.

While avoiding Macabre you’ll need to be on the lookout for items you can craft with. From every day household items to interdimensional alien Artefacts. Everything you find could potentially help Banjo craft a new contraption!

Once you find the right stuff, you’ll unlock new equipment that will not only help you deal with Macabre’s growing power, but reveal things that were previously hidden!

A core element ensuring Macabre is endlessly terrifying is its unpredictability. Every time you step into a Rift, you're not just playing a game but diving into the unknown. Each session randomly assigns the map layout, objectives, and monster behaviours. This means no two games are the same, ensuring you'll never feel comfortable or overly familiar with what's lurking around the corner.

A unique blend of atmospheric environments, intelligent monsters, and suspense-filled gameplay.

Meticulously crafted in Unreal Engine 5, with detailed environments that will draw you into the unsettling reality of the Rift.

The monsters, inspired by real-world predators, display calculated behaviours and adapt to your actions, creating a constant sense of tension and unpredictability.

The absence of traditional combat mechanics emphasises strategic thinking and resourcefulness, making every decision critical to survival.

Macabre is currently being developed by Sydney-based Weforge Studio. Our team comes from various backgrounds, including feature film VFX, advertising, spatial audio, animation, 3D and programming. We all share a love for video games and a passion for horror.

Our goal is to create the most immersive multiplayer horror experience available. The plan is to build Macabre in chapters and then use the profits to reinvest into new content. The success of this release will help further development, including new maps, monsters, and puzzles. By releasing the game in instalments, we can deliver a polished experience that stays true to our vision of the final game.

Each chapter will take you deeper into the twisted world we're building, where danger lurks around every corner, and fear is your constant companion. Join us on this exciting journey and help make Macabre the next big thing!

Macabre is forged from our deep roots and passion for video games. We've drawn inspiration from many great titles to create Macabre, an immersive horror experience featuring unique, bespoke locations, terrifying monsters, and intelligent AI. Our adaptive AI ensures that every encounter is unpredictable, keeping you in constant suspense, similar to the cunning Xenomorph you face in Alien: Isolation.

Our repayable game loop offers a thrilling blend of strategy and tension. Players must carefully navigate the environment, balancing risk and reward to decide when to engage or evade.

Additionally, we're creating a dynamic and interactive sonic landscape, ensuring that sounds are deeply ingrained into the game loop. We want players to play with audio, as sound cues will be crucial for survival and success. These elements are inspired by the intricate level design and extraction mechanics of Hunt: Showdown.

In Macabre, multiplayer horror is best experienced with friends, allowing you to share the terror, work together, or compete against each other in a way similar to Dread Hunger. Our style of multiplayer co-op gameplay truly inspires a range of emotions, whether you're messing with your friends or working together. Phasmophobia taught us how much more enjoyable horror can be in a shared setting.

We've been developing Macabre for a couple of years now, ensuring it stands out in a growing genre. The recent success of games like Lethal Company has proven a strong interest in extraction horror, motivating us to differentiate Macabre and offer a fresh, thrilling experience.

Social mechanics are fundamental to Macabre. VOIP enables unique player interactions, fostering unexpected alliances or rivalries. Our co-founders, Jay and Jake, even met via in-game voice chat in DayZ, highlighting the deep connections these mechanics can create. These social dynamics are inspired by the interactions we personally had playing DayZ.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Macabre includes many classic horror elements, such as monsters, intense suspense, and blood. It features mild but frequent depictions of violence and gore, as well as general mature themes. While players can expect a chilling atmosphere, jump scares, and tense situations designed to evoke fear, the game also incorporates a subtle, tongue-in-cheek comedic undertone. This adds an element of fun and light-heartedness to balance the intensity of the horror experience.
