What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Put plainly, the purpose of this project isn't to raise money (though funding isn’t a bad thing – we already started a Patreon for that), it’s to assess and enhance Conversational Adventure™ games. Last year, we launched the first of its type on Steam; entitled, “Lost Legends of Redwall™: Escape the Gloomer”. We want to make sure that we’re putting out a product that is modern, feature rich, and that highlights the best that can be done with typed interactive play. Your feedback will be invaluable towards helping us refine not only this game, but also future games and all the systems that accompany it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At least a month, but probably longer. We’re very interested in know what you, the player, consider to be a “finished” game and look forward to hearing your comments.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Since this is a redux of the original Adventureland (originally released by Scott Adams in 1978), we’re not starting with a blank slate. That game, though innovative at the time and first of its kind, lacked the features of modern interactive games. Additionally, the elements of Conversational Adventure™ games – like entering full sentences, didn’t exist at the time. Using the power of the player’s imagination and typed words, Conversational Adventure™ games build immersion, uses modern language, and is designed with the player in Mind.

In the Full Version, we’ll be adding: original background art, audio narration, a soundtrack, and sound effects. We also plan on creating / refining a new ending, adding a compass UI, adding Suggestion Mode (S Mode – allows players to pick from a list of suggestions for easier play), achievements, and, of course, fixing any bugs that surface. Finally, we’ll be listening to you to see what other features are needed and make sense.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of Adventureland XL contains the base game converted into a Conversational Adventure™ game plus two new areas, a revamped UI system, settings menus, new narration (including the addition of Adventurer Scott and a few other literary/pop culture characters), and Trophy Tokens (coins marking progression through the game).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Because this game is in Early Access and we expect it to contain some bugs, we plan on offering a reduced price for Early Access as a thank you to those who join us early. Once we release the full, finished game, we’ll increase the price to be commensurate with its new feature set.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“It’s important to us to create content that people love, so we’ll not only be listening closely to your comments, but also be soliciting your assistance with the various features of the game – including feedback on the new ending.”
