Season 11.5 Now Live!

Nearly a year ago, the Alliance began to investigate the possibilities of using time travel as a tool to change the past in order to save the future. With the successful construction and deployment of the Annorax-class Science Dreadnought, the first steps were made into a new future of exploration and conflict mitigation.

Unfortunately, the recent theft of that same ship has potentially planted the seeds of our destruction, and those seeds begin to bear fruit in the episode “Temporal Front”. There will be political intrigue, an enemy plot, and a massive fleet engagement while the past and future of the Alliance hangs in the balance. This Featured Episode will be an escalation point in this budding conflict that you definitely don’t want to miss!

On top of another amazing episode, we have a great collection of features and updates for everyone to enjoy. First and foremost, we have a complete revamp of the Skill System. This revamp will make creating any build you want clearer, simpler, and easier across the board. Everything in the Skill System has been laid out, rethought, continually tested, and iterated on with you on our test shard for nearly two months. I couldn’t be more excited for this change, and I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it.

In addition to the skill revamp we have the brand new Strategist Secondary Specialization, the Romulan Admiralty Campaign, a new and exciting Na’kuhl-themed Red Alert, and last but certainly not least, the ability to slot ship visuals independent from your starship stats.

All in all, this is one of the largest mid-season updates in the history of Star Trek Online, and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying it in game.

This is game for people who likes sci-fi action. You can spend countless hours of playing this game.
"Thinking i will play this mission only" and many hours has passed. :)
Even the game has older, not so slick graphics engine. It's still very enjoyable and playable game.
And the game is still alive and kicking, after it has been released quite long time ago.
I recommend to try this game...

If you want a game thats fun for a good 50 - 100 hours, looks nice, and is based around an interenting series, this game is for you. I can't speak for long term play or premium game play, but just free to play has been fun, and i've been playing entirely solo. I don't play every day, but i do jump on for a few days then hop to another game. I haven't gotten bored of it yet, so if it can keep me interested for 230 hours it can keep you interested for at least 50.

And lets face it. its free. considering the amount of content and the fact you can get premoum content with out paying a cent if you really want to, if you want it waste your time in some random game, why not be this realy fun game.

I've been on the fence about which way to lean for a long time, I want to recommend it because I've always been a big fan of Star Trek and this is the only ST MMO, but I just can't.

To start with, it has consistently gone downhill since cryptic (the developer) was sold off by Atari and bought by perfect world international. Anyone familiar with PWI knows they're at about the level of nexon for terrible support, outrageous prices, and poor to nonexistent communication. Well, I'll give cryptic this, they do blog posts and announcements about everything, have frequent livestreams, and devs will occasionally chime in on forum topics, but when it comes to support? Good luck. You may or may not get a canned response when you submit a ticket, and may or may not ever get a real person to reply to you after you reply to the canned response, and they know their support is beyond terrible because they completely removed the satisfaction survey people could fill out after their support ticket was closed.

The prices for most of the premium content is also ridiculous (especially ships.....$25-$30 per for endgame ships), and even things that are basic in most MMOs cost money here. Want to rename your character? Pay up. But the rename tokens don't even work properly and it shows your old name in a lot of in game dialogue. Did you misclick somewhere in the newly revamped skill tree that no longer has confirmation and just assigns a skill immediately wherever you click? Guess it sucks to be you, pay up for that reskill token. You can buy 30+ character slots, but the game has been made so alt unfriendly with all the reputations and specializations to grind for that it's mostly pointless to play more than one character anymore unless you're really hardcore and can juggle 2 or 3. And the expansion themed bundles? $130 for a few ships, a handful of costumes, maybe a title or two, and some master keys? I don't know about anyone else but I can't justify dropping $130 unless there's some physical goods to go with it.

New "content" is frequently added to the game but it's almost always just a tie-in to some new cash item, most often gacha style lockboxes which aren't cash items themselves but require master keys to open, which are cash items. Lately any new features are just tweaks to or revamps of existing mechanics, which always cause a slew of bugs that get reported on the test server but usually make it into the live build anyway. Some bugs have been around for years and have never been fixed, eventually cryptic just gave up trying to fix most of them and either labeled them as "working as intended" like cloak deactivating on dialogue popups, or just decided to ignore them. This is compounded by the fact that all of the original devs either quit or were let go and the new ones have little knowledge of how the game's base code works. One of them even posted in a forum topic about bugs that "working on STO was like trying to untangle spaghetti, you're going to end up with a mess no matter what you do."

Power creep has gotten so disgusting in STO that it's even hard for the devs to keep up with it. One of the most popular queued missions (Crystalline cataclysm advanced) has been broken because player damage output can get so high the boss with hundreds of millions of HP sometimes dies before one of the objectives can be completed. A lot of people just shrug and say "oh well", but when you consider that the objectives are tied to events that trigger at certain HP threshholds and it often dies before the first one finishes so the second one can trigger.....yeah. But instead of addressing the runaway damage output it gets buffed even more? It used to only be the hardcore elite players that could hit the 75k DPS mark, then it was 100k, now they're pushing 150k and people hitting 50-75k is becoming common. Instead of giving enemies better AI and more skills to use to mitigate or heal damage cryptic takes the lazy route and just increases HP and damage output for them, then puts out the next set of shinies to boost player damage output and the cycle repeats.

The game was fun while Atari owned it, and still was for a while after, but it's been turned into just another cash cow that milks a popular franchise. There is very little "Star Trek" material in the game in it's current state aside from the general theme, if the ships and outfits were replaced with generic designs nobody would be able to tell it was a Star Trek themed game. There's no exploration (there actually was an exploration system but it was removed because cryptic decided it would be too much work to update it) and the theme to every mission is "kill them all", there's no diplomacy options that actually matter (there USED to be diplomacy missions and even first contacts with minor species, but they were removed for the same reason as exploration) since no matter what dialogue choices you make you don't affect the outcome of missions at all, it's basically just flavor text with no substance. The only reason I still play occasionally is I've invested too much time into it to throw it all away, so I log in every now and then to blow things up for a bit or chat with friends.

TL;DR:
If you think you'd like a generic grind MMO with a Star Trek flavor you may enjoy it, but if you're a Trek fan who's looking for a Star Trek themed MMO, sadly this isn't it.

Am playing this through Arc and would be nice to just have it here with the rest of my games. If you are fan of pretty much any of the shows than you will enjoy how this game plays out. Space AND land missions at the same time and the stories play out rather nicely. Also they have been able to get the actual actores to come back and do the voices which is great attention to detail.

A++ in my book and a must play for any Star Trek and RPG fan.

Very fun game, i love all of the customization options such as customizing your ship's look and color, to changing how your player and officers look. It has a great star trek feel to the story missions also, almost like you are in the show instead of just watching it. Also the gameplay is really fun, from flying your ship, or going on away missions. Another thing i really liked was all of the references to the shows ( TNG, Voyager, DS9, TOS, and the movies) Overall, i highly recommend this game for anyone who likes Star Trek or just a good space game.

If you like star trek and MMORPG, definetely try out this game.

If you like star trek but not MMORPG, well, have a try. At least the storyline will satisfy you.

If you like MMORPG but not star trek, why not check this game out? It's a good MMORPG.

If you hate both, don't play this game then. You can't have fun, why playing it?

I just hit 1k hours. The storyline of this game will MAKE YOU CHEER when you see characters you love from Star Trek appearing. The space combat is awesome. The ground combat is not as popular among players as space combat but also very nice.

You can enjoy this game the best when you play with your friends, but I have to say that in-game chatting is LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!! If you want to chat well, you'll have to rely on some other aps.

This game has its disadvantages though. First, the endgame period, like many other RPGs, are boring. All you can do is repeating some missions every day. This is not true when you are chasing for higher stats and competing with other players.

For me, all the weaknesses don't matter because I LOVE THIS GAME.

This game takes longer to load than Windows Vista. That's pretty damn sad......and that's just the main title screen!

Considering I have a speed of 50mB up and 3MB down, i don't understand why it's taking so long to load.

Other than that this game looks fantastic and I will write a proper review in a few hours when the game finally actually loads.

Great game! I like that it appeals to beginners as well as veterans of mmo's. I met people on this game who have been playing for 5+ years and they are very helpful to noobs like me. It can be very time consuming. That is my only warning. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone. You don't have to be a Star Trek fan to play, but it's cooler if you are. LOL!

If you have more than a passing interest in Star Trek, this MMO is worth trying out since it's free; you don't need to shell out any money to reach the level cap or to have fun while you level up. The F2P model feels fair since you can grind for the in-game currency that allows you to buy any ship or NPCs in the game. There is no paywall to speak of since as a completely F2P player I managed to get ships and equipment good enough to do endgame content.

My favorite part of the game is building up the roster of capable Duty Officers that you can send on missions, just like what a real captain of a starship is expected to do. Your duty officers can even come back injured if the mission was particularly harrowing, and take time to heal in sickbay. Want to see Seven-of-Nine as a Bridge Officer on your own ship? You can do it in this game.

So why did I stop playing? It's not the F2P nature of the game, which I still hold as a gold standard for F2P games. It's the lack of immersion which I crave for in games that finally drove me away. First and foremost, there is an insane number of loading screens. Moving from a room in my own ship to another room can result in a loading screen that can take up to a minute to load.

Also, the art direction does not feel like Star Trek and the textures on some of the ship are very low resolution, such as my favorite ship in Star Trek, the Intrepid class. The new ships made just for STO did not feel like Star Trek.

Other graphical infidelities kept grinding at me: the phasers on a starship do not fire out of the phaser strips, the bussard collectors are static, the ceiling is way too high inside a ship. And last but certainly not least, I have to pilot the ship myself all the time where a captain in Star Trek leaves the piloting to the helmsman. I signed on to play as a captain, not a helmsman. Immersion gone.

I would return to the game if they fixed this but this is impossible without a total rewrite of the game, which will never happen. Perhaps in the next Star Trek MMO we will have a more immersive experience, but don't write off this one just because it's not perfect. It's a great experience while you level up and enjoy the stories in the missions, all without spending a single cent.

After sinking the better part of my university career into this game i came to the conclussion that this game is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bar you go to with your friends. When your with friends its the best, the conversations with the fleet (guild) or random players kept me up late but when your there without your friends you realise its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bar. The PVP is dead or woefully unbalanced and despite the three "classes" (the three departments in starfleet, science, tactical and engineering) the holy trinity does not exist here. It is all about DPS numbers with all group PVE actions requiring high DPS to have a chance. The story up to end-game is enjoyable for both of the main factions (fed and klingon) and the sub-faction (romulan) but when you reach max level the game boils down to run the same mission over and over and over to gain currency to buy better gear to make the same mission easier to complete. There is no depth to this game beyond character creation (which is surprisngly robust) and it suffers from pay to win to an unbearable degree.

This game has a lot of charm for people that are deeply into retrogaming. The engine is fifteen years old and it shows. The visuals are primitive and great fun for the Playstation 2 enthusiast crowd. However, because the game is built on Cryptic's ancient proprietary engine, the game suffers tremendously.

The early (first two weeks or so) of play, this game is very entertaining. It may be prehistoric, but the pew pew is mildly entertaining. The earlier storylines are pretty good, but many have been revamped recently, and the revamps are utterly awful. The dialogue reads like it was written by a middle school student that watched too much scoobie doo growing up.

After the leveling ends, however, you are presented with the reality of the game. Since being bought out by Perfect World Entertainment, Cryptic has lost most of the rights to direct the development of their games. As a result, Star Trek Online and other Cryptic IPs like Neverwinter have recently begun losing players at a dramatic rate. The honeymoon after going FTP has reached it's inevitable conclusion with this game as Perfect World Entertainment has turned this game into a thinly veiled scam and gambling interface that utterly diminishes the intellectual property and is pretty offensive. There is a common excuse used by Cryptic apologists that 'well, all FTP games are like that these days'. Hogwash. That's no excuse.

Because Perfect World has so drastically reduced Cryptic's resources to develop the game, there has been little to no real content introduced since early last year. Ever quarter or so, Cryptic is able to scrounge together a 'featured episode' that evidently has never been edited or run through any kind of quality assurance, and call that 'content'. At the same time, the bulk of their resources and development is spent on introducing more 'lockbox' ships. These 'lockbox ships' are quickly thrown together reskins of earlier ships and don't really introduce anything to the game. You have the privilege of paying for lockbox keys in order to open the boxes that contain them if you feel lucky, as you have less than a .005% chance of getting the ship in the lockbox. The entire game runs off of this mechanic. Where a valid and reputable game has a crafting system, Star Trek Online has a gambling system, where even if you spend the 8-12 months (yes, an entire year) maxing out a single crafting skill, you can't actually craft the gear you are trying to. Instead, you are permitted a minimal 'chance' to create the desired gear.

So in the end, Star Trek Online is a good game to play for a few weeks. As the lead developer has stated the game isn't really interested in retaining players. They rely completely on gamer churn. There is no endgame content, there is no meaningful progression, there is no reason to invest a single dime in or continue playing past the level cap. Everything after that point is a sad scam designed to get you to throw out those dollars. And we're not talking three or four dollars here. For the ships gated by Perfect World Entertainment's Zen (ingame currency) store, you are expected to shell out between 25 and 120 for what you're after. 120 dollars for a ship in this prehistoric engine on a game that is just a thin veneer for a gambling simulator.

I would have recommended this game to people about two years ago. But now, as the population is disappearing and the ingame community is dwindling to nothing, as well as the development team holding a very public scorn for the remaining players, I would have to say 'save yourself the heartache'. Watching what Perfect World Entertainment has done to the Star Trek intellectual property will break your heart if you're a Star Trek fan. According to rumor there is another Star Trek MMO in the works. Wait for that one. This one isn't worth your time.

This game is starting to stumble on its own gravitas. It is overpriced, though because they do sometimes get actual actors from the various Star Treks, you can understand why. The problem is the content looses its luster, it is way too grindy, pvp is almost non existent and hard to access, and pve action well, just dosent have that many mechanics, the game trys to stay fresh by selling you new space ships, but skimps on content. The devs got to overzealous with this game, and paid a steep price.

Star Trek online is a spectacular game. With that being said there is alot to do in game. The Quests and instances make you feel very immersed into the star trek universe. My only grip with this game as it can get complicated, there is somewhat of a learning curve and it can be overwhelming to some players. Over all this game is well done and it does a good job connecting all elements of every star trek series. Id say if you are a star trek fan you cant go wrong. If you like complicated yet dynamic space exploration games youll like this game as well. Communitys however are a different story, it is hard for me to find americans that I can group up with. Either way its a good game in an over saturated MMO market, so it kind of makes this a diamond in the rough.

Do you like star trek? do you like exploring the galaxy in your starship? discovering new species? settling diplomatic disputes? well than this is not the game for you!

First a recount of my latest encounter with this games support:

After playing this game for years and having beyond hundreds of hours into it, a glitch in the game deleted one of my ships and with it all of my gear, after contacting support and going back and forth for several days they ultimately told me there was nothing they were willing to do to help me... nothing at all.

The bottom line is this is a dying MMO with nearly no effort put into it, there is NOTHING to do in the end game, which will only take you about a weekend to reach max level. The whole game should just be put out of its misery and cryptic should learn how to \ re-evaluate how the currently treat the long term players and supports of this game, especially that still pay money to play a free to play game... They are an inept company that doesn't care about its customers
If they didn't have the star trek IP they would have gone out of business when Atari dumped them and part of me wishes they had...

The game play is weak, pretty much all you have to do is spam the space bar until you win, the writing and acting in the game are some of the worst i have ever seen, almost every "new" mission involves either time travel, and let me sum up ALL of the games story lines in one phrase - "The iconians did it" - This hardly mentioned in the show race is apparently responsible for every single event that has ever happened in the galaxy and has become Cryptic's all purpose excuse for poor writing and zero imagination every story line just leads back to an : it was the iconians moment...
There is nothing that makes Star Trek so wonderful and enjoyable in this game, no interactions with crew members, no dramatic writing, no exciting moments, no diplomatic responses to anything... simply power up shields - hit the space bar and pew pew to victory...

I think my time with STO has come to an end, I recommend if you are a current player you get out before what happened to me happens to you and if your considering playing it please don't, or at the very least don't give them a single penny of your hard earned money it isn't worth it and Cryptic/Perfect world simply doesn't care about any of their players and sadly I don't think they ever will.

I loved this game. It was so awesome. I put hours and hours in to this game. But suddenly, it stoped working. After trying to get it back and running, I gave up. Now after months, I now realize they took away the Mac version!! Like; WTF!!!!!!!!!

I downloaded it four years ago.

This has made a lot of people angry and is generally regarded as a bad move.

Several fleets - one especially horrible, hundreds (probably thousands) of dollars, and one failed attempt at taking charge and making change later and... I regret like 80% of what I did in these 4,000-odd hours I have logged. Time to write it all down!

If there's a bright center of the Star Trek universe, you're looking on the game it's farthest from. This game takes the Star Trek that you know and love and rubs it in the dirt. That being said... there are some points that should be made.

-Admittedly, This game has one of the better communities I've seen. To be specific... its Reddit community is great. Ingame chat? It's a disease.

-The gameplay is pretty okay in space, but it really tanks in ground combat. Stuff needs fixed.

-The F2P model is strange, but it kind of works. Game's free, you can subscribe if you want to. All the leveling/PvE/PvP content is free. What isn't free is the premium ships.

-Ingame store is pretty fair. You can actually buy stuff there without spending a cent of your own money. Granted, that's a long and arduous process, but it's real and it kind of feels rewarding.

-Cryptic - the devs, seem like they're stepping it up, to be honest. They're consistantly releasing content and fixing things that need it, but a lot of stuff does seem to go unnoticed by them.

That's the good, here's the bad:

-Visually... meh. It's not great, but it's not horrible and that's all the game will ever be in this respect.

-Story-wise... you're better off watching the Star Wars holiday special.

-The ingame economy is horrible. It's pretty much impossible to be rich credit-wise without paying RL money.

-The Dilithium economy is so bad that it makes Greece look stable. That's also how you get premium ships without paying cash, by the way.

-Fleets and the people that run them are the reason why I quit this game. Like most MMO guilds, they really only care about numbers. You want to be treated like a person and have a basic level of respect, the same that you should give and are expected to? Nope. Not happening here. Coupled with the fact that they're more or less necessary if you want to be on top in the endgame... yeah. Stay away if you want to keep your sanity. Use public service channels for all your fleet-related stuff.

At the end of the day? Don't waste your time on this game. You can do so much better.

Am MMO that feels more like a single player game than a multiplayer. Despite seeing players and their ships, most are ultra-casuals that play solo. Queues are always dead. No real advancement as you will be doing the same things after max lvl cap that you did to get there. 6 years of the same bugs, unreliable server setup and the mot god-awful, no respect for the playerbase support I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Most support tickets are deleted without player contact unless one is verbally supportive of the company on twitter.

Played for almost 3 years after it launched, left for 2 years, came back a few months ago...same game despite "expansions" that are no more than a new faceplate for the same tired grind. The entire game is a grind and it never ends. There is no endgame, only the same game. Whatever new skills you learn or ships you fly, you will be using them on the same missions at lvl 60 that you ran at lvl 20. You'll even need to run the same mission 2-5 times each (or more) to acquire all the items that can be rewarded...not diffferent missons for diffferent gear, the same missions, over and over and over again...then onto the next mission for multi-repeat runs.

Very limited inventory space with hundreds upon hundreds of wholly useless items that will keep your inv full non stop without buying more space or living in front of a vendor. Player premium currency exchange market is so horridly out of control in price only long established players will really benefit from it before the servers are unplugged (the f2p is there but its a miserable experience now - in the first couple years it was quite good and the "devs" kept the market exchange balanced...they no longer do that.)

Poor and dated graphics from a decade past that don't even begin to stress an old card like an HD6870 let alone ever even get a gtx 790 out of 1st gear. Unavoidable cutscenes that make the replaying of missions miserable as you'll spend more time in cutscenes than in the gameplay of most. Sound effects that have caps...the system can only process X# of sounds but in cases where there are more than it can provide to you it will skip, cut out and stutter while it decides which to make audible and which to mute. The best sound cards on the market cant force the sounds the client cant process.

It is a click to win game with no skill of any kind required or even rewarded. Mash the buttons and you cannot lose. *case in point...I set a mission to advanced level and let my cat walk on the keyboard as I pet her...mission accomplished with no deaths :( Elite is only more time consuming due to the sheer scaling of HP and resists for NPC's...they get entirely ridiculous...no challenge, just time.

There is no more Trek here than in a star wars game, aside NPC names and ship models. If you can get lost in a grind, this might be the game for you. If you enjoy watching the same episode of a show 5 times before moving on to the next, it might be a game for you. If you like to think about your gameplay, enjoy tactics, teamwork, or even communicating with people in an MMO during the few queued events you'll be able to partake in, this is probably not a game you'll enjoy.

Simply awful. This game is infested with trolls. Servers are jink and cryptic usless for any assitance at all. People in game are some of the worst people I have come across on the net to date. Thats really saying something. Not children freindly, not fun at all. Not worth it for free. What a stain on the Star Trek brand. Paramount should pull thier support of this mess.
