I had the dos-cd rom version and this works but man the sea trade route missions take forever...put 10-15 aliens on a titanic and then play hide and go seek...hours to find all of them!!!...same as the first x-com with a twist! 4/5 for me!

It's an expansion pack to UFO: Enemy Unknown - almost everything here is just taken from the original game, given a different name and graphics, and sold as new material. Not that that makes it a bad game or anything, just be aware that there's really not much new to it...

I was a big xcom ufo defence fan because i liked the challenge and the freedom of doing what you want. It is cool that there is an underwater version now as well. I recomend you play this game only if you like losing a lot or your a really good streategist.

It's really hard for me to do an unbiased review of this game, so I would rather speak about my
personal experience.

When I was about 11 years old, I played the first X-COM: UFO Defense through and through.
As a kid I thought it was the most challenging, well-put togheter game I'd ever played.

Time passed by, and, one fateful day, I read the review of X-COM: Terror From the Deep in a french
magazine. There was only one thing left to do: BUY. IT. NOW.

And, thanks to my parents (and me being a good boy around xmas ;)) I got my hands on a copy of this
game. I still own the original box, floppy disc edition.

I played this game at least one week per month for about a year and a half.

It's now 2014, and I still haven't found a game so compelling since. Everything in this game pulled me
in, and would never let me go. The music. The atmosphere. This always present feeling of dread. The pressure put on your shoulders when trying to save as many civilians as possible during a Terror mission without sacrificing your favorite soldiers.
And, above all else, the incredible depth of the tactical options that were offered to you throughout the game. Both in combat situation and on the Geosphere's more laid-back, strategical planning.

This is the kind of game that involves you so much that you start to create your own stories about your pixelated soldiers. I knew their names.I knew what they were capable, or uncapable of doing while on a mission. I knew them, and losing any of them had some kind of impact on me. "They were my soldiers. my mates. They were good soldiers, and I'll never forget them."

To me, X-COM: Terror From the Deep defines the word "classic" when it comes to Strategic planning and Tactical

All my squad got killed by a camping aquatoid
This game literally cheats and slaughters your squad leaving no one alive and you'll be lucky if your troops get past recruit
and thats why its fun and so satisfying to win, to defeat the aliens and to save the human race

A great game, but as a sequel it does the bare minimum.

The aliens have launched a Terror attack on a cargo vessel. My X-COM operatives have fought their way into the middle cabins on the deck of the tanker. Three units are grouped together, preparing to breach another room. Suddenly, one of the three is taken under molecular control but opts not to shoot the other two and instead runs into the unexplored room. Now I face a decision: do I enter the room knowing that I will likely be fired upon by my own unit or wait it out, leaving her inside with unknown terrors?

I decide to wait. As soon as my aquanaut comes to her senses she is blasted repeatedly by a Bio Drone until she drops unconscious. Now I face another problem as the room is quite small and there is nowhere I can safely fire upon the Bio Drone without getting caught in its death explosion. But I have a wounded soldier that needs help ASAP so I burst into action. One unit dashes into the room taking only time to grab the unconscious body of his comrade before rushing back out. While the door is still open the remaining aquanaut pulls a grenade off his belt, primes it and throws it right at the base of the Bio Drone before retreating a short ways. The blast from the grenade blows out the walls, yet still hovering in the smoke is the Bio Drone, now able to see my exposed grenadier. Fortunately his Ion Armor absorbs most of the shots that rain down on him leaving him a little shaken but with no fatal wounds. Suspecting that the alien can't take much more punishment he sets up and fires back. He connects and this time the floating death disc goes down in a fiery explosion even bigger than that of the grenade. My shooter is ok but a poor civilian gets caught in the edge of the blast and is killed.

The fighting is over in this sector but there is still drama left. My unconscious warrior is bleeding out but the nearest medic is several rooms away. The medic and the aquanaut hauling her limp form sprint toward each other. Will they make it in time to save her? Yes! He patches her up and pumps her with stimulants to get her back on her feet. Now weaponless, weak and in need of a few weeks off to recover, she is out of the fight; but she is alive.
X-COM has the ability to create moments like these that are wholly your own. This episode felt like something out of an action film to me. It's complete with heroics, suspense, mad dashes, aliens, hard decisions, explosions and a nameless citizen as collateral damage. Combine the combat side with the also enjoyable base management and research side and Terror From the Deep is truly an excellent game.

However, taken in context of its predecessor, UFO Defense, it is a weak sequel. It is largely just a reskin with some tweaked stats for equipment and aliens. The biggest additions are new environments to fight in and a bit of alien lore. Ultimately it's more like a standalone expansion than a true sequel.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention a few gripes I had beyond the weak sequel issue. First, the game has a few pretty bad bugs, mostly within the research tree. Fortunately there is a small, free, fan made fix for these bugs called XcomUtil that is popular enough that you shouldn't have trouble finding it. And finally, the last place you invade at the end of the game, T'Leth, is just awful. The 2nd and 3rd portions of this mission are seemingly never ending slogs through linear winding corridors and rooms with relatively sparse alien resistance. My units were constantly out of energy from all the running. To top it off you cannot save your game during the final (3rd) portion which made for a marathon of several hours to finish both the 2nd and 3rd maps in one sitting. It left a definite bitter aftertaste lingering after completing this otherwise fantastic game.

I purchased a copy of this game in the late 90's for DOS. It was the first X-Com game I owned, but not the first turn based strategy. I still have not completed it, as I never played it on an easy difficulty. What is the fun in that? It remains one of the best games I have ever played. And I will tell you why:

- This game, unlike the original X-Com and the new X-Com offers nearly limitless tactical combat. Every part of the environments you fight in, except the base ground itself, can be utterly destroyed. My favorite tactic was to equip all my soldiers with high explosive weapons and literally blast the landscape apart. You cannot destroy certain parts until you unlock technologies later in the game, but eventually you can destroy pretty much everything. The best armor has a hover option like the others. You can use motion scanners to map out enemy movements and plan your strike room by room. You can use motion detecting mines to lock down/minimize enemy flanking movements. You can equip a stunning melee weapon and charge unprepared aliens. If you encounter an unwinnable situation you can recover as much gear as possible and evacuate your remaining troops. Even light plays a factor, you can use flares and phosporous weapons to reveal enemies at longer distances, night missions are horribly difficult.

- The AI is fantastically brilliant, for the most part. Sometimes Aliens will seem to wander randomly, however, once they "know" you are there, they are deviously adept at tearing apart your troops. It really takes a strong tactical strategy to take them down when on a ground mission. On the overworld, the UFO sightings are not random, they are actually building forces, completing objectives, and growing in power over time.

- The research projects are wonderful, they are complex enough to require a serious effort in maintaining a technological paralell with the enemy, while not so overburdened to make useless items.

It isn't a perfect game, there are some notable issues:

- There are bugs with the research tree that make the game unwinnable if not researched in the right order. There are in game fixes to this but they are near impossible to figure out without a guide. Research these before you seriously play the game, or get a community-made patch that fixes it.

- Sometimes you may click the wrong spot or accidentially click as you are examining the battlefield and your soldier performs the wrong action or leaves himself horribly exposed. This is an unfortunate side effect of the way the engine was made. Save often.

- This game has a hard hard learning curve. You will have to restart several times a-la Dark Souls to actually learn how to play the game.

You should play this game. Do it now. :)

I used to be a huge fan of Ufo: Enemy Unknown (The European version of the original XCOM: Ufo Defense) and I got this XCOM complete pack recently.

I remembered how these old games are incredibly hard, so I started on Easy mode to get used to the game.

On my very first mission I took my first step out of the submarine and was immediately shot by a rocket launcher which killed 7 of my 8 soldiers instantly. The 8th soldier panicked and killed himself.

Welcome to Easy Mode.

Pretty awesome, there's lots to do, enemy ships and bases require strategy to take them down, great research, but be aware there are some bugs that can screw it up for you. Basically the research needs to be done in specific order, otherwise you'll miss important things and possibly won;t be able to finish it.

The research bugs aside, the game has great everything, music, acceptable graphics even so many years after being made, The aliens can attack your base so don't forget base defence.

The only thing I can as against the game is that once you start it and get into it, it's very difficult to stop ...

Finally besides the PS1 version there is a Working WINDOWS compatible version of this game.
With Windows 7 i experienced no super-fast gameplay problems like other versions (so there's no need to underclock your processor to dangerously low levels), and all of the original videos and game ran fine without any crashes or freezes or superfast scroll speed problems like other versions.

The in-game timer ticks at ORIGINAL speeds and its finally...FINALLY working 99% like the original. (see below for the minor hiccup)

Either play it here on Steam, or on Ps1 these are the two, best versions.

The only one hickup i found on this version, is that it changes the Mouse Speed on your system to default setting, when i normally run mine 3-4 notches faster, so be sure to correct your mouse speed after playing this.

I love this series, but pick up X-Com, UFO Defense for the original feel or XCOM: Enemey Unknown for the updated play. Terror from the deep has fewer enemy types, less intereseting technology, and a less cohesive story than the original X-Com. There are a lot of game-ending bugs as well. For example, if you research things in the wrong order, you can't get a certain technology you need to move forward. Overall, this is just a sloppy art skin slapped on the original. Pass on this, even if you're a hardcore fan.

Ok, before I get into the good, the bad and the ugly, I should say that I DO recommend this game, the reason I’m saying this is that my initial review may sound quite negative. I am writing this just moment’s after playing terror from the deep and I wanted to have a clear view of the game, so without further a due.

This game did the impossible; it managed to be harder than UFO defence! HARDER!

Right, lets go through this in a bit more detail.

The year is 2040, and the world is still recovering from the first alien war. alien technology from the first game is now available for all.

this has lead to countries dividing, wars waged, and a widespread of brooding synthesizers accompanying dirty cops in trench coats roaming the streets of neo-japan, looking for the dame who killed that hooker on kitaueno drive!
who was she to her?
who was she working for?
was it a crime of passion?
did she hire her and if so, why?

All these questions and more WON’T be answered because that’s now what this games about.

Recently there has been alien activity going down under the sea, and now entire cruse ships are going missing, so now its up to you; the commander of the newly formed X-COM navy to find out, who these guys are, where thy are coming from, why are they attacking and most importantly, who they think they are messing with humanity (F@CK YEAH)

The Story is rather reminiscent of lovecraftian horror or rather an old doctor who episode. (The gill men are basically the sea devils) take this as ether good or bad, its really up to preference, personally I think its rather good, unlike the gameplay. Somehow, MicroProse took X-com UFO defence’s ball-breaking difficulty and managed to make it MORE DIFFICULT! The aliens cheat. There’s no other way of putting it; they are absolutely ♥♥♥♥ing relentless. The levels are more diverse, now including seabeds, ports and sunken pirate ships! But this just leads to more opportunities for the aliens to bend you over the table and ♥♥♥♥ING ♥♥♥♥ YOU IN THE ♥♥♥! GODDAM HEARTS!!

Conveniently, all technology acquired from the previous war doesn’t work underwater. (I suppose we now know where mass effect 3 got its sense of logic from) so the tech trees have been changed to submersive technology. Seeing as the game takes place mostly underwater, this change is to be expected, its also pretty cool to see all the new underwater armour, weapons and even underwater TANKS!!!

PRO TIP: research gauss, IMEADEANTLY! Gauss is essentially the underwater equivalent of the laser technology from UFO defence. Gauss rifles are powerful; they look cool and sound cool, especially on land.

Since the gameplay is directly lifted from UFO defence, what good that comes is closely followed by the BAD. As in UFO defence, games can slow to an agonising crawl, more often than not with the “shipping route terror attacks” where you must sweep a cruse ship of aliens, while trying (and flailing) to keep as many civvies alive as possible. “Well that don’t sound to hard now” I hear you cry. Believe me, these ones are like sticking your ♥♥♥♥ in a vat of boiling ♥♥♥♥ with a fresh dollop of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and salt! ♥♥♥♥ING HEARTS!

The graphics are pretty much the same besides the sailors now look like crash test dummies but there are some cool creature designs, like the deep ones, the gill men and the lobster men.

Speaking of.

F@CK THE LOBSTERZ! There near indestructible, they NEVER miss and they’re VERY crafty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s. DO NOT INGAGE without the best equipment possible. You have been warned!

The music is more melancholy this time I have to admit but it suites the atmosphere quite well. It gives the feeling of a monstrous enemy remerging from a distant memory of a past war, for the first 5 minutes, then it starts to get really annoying, especially when on really frustrating missions.

Like I said at the beginning, this game is not, repeat, ♥♥♥♥ING NOT A BAD GAME! “But you’ve been complaining about it more that praising it, Asum, if its not a bad game then what is it?” you say. That’s a Good question, and its one I’ve been trying to answer myself all the time I’ve been playing terror from the deep. But I now have the answer!

Think about it; ridiculously hard levels, cheating enemy AI, an adversary with an unfair advantage and a THOUSAND WAYS TO ♥♥♥♥ UP! (Oh screw you hearts!)

These are all things X-COM is universally praised for, by critics and gamers alike!

And no X-COM game is as brutal and sadistic as Terror from the deep! But, it is because of this, this is the game to put all strategy aficionados to the test and most likely break them!

If you’re a masochistic turn-based strategy, or real time strategy fan who wants to get sectioned, then click “add to cart” RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!
