Informazioni sul gioco

War has been waged across the kingdom of Myrtana. Orcish hordes invaded human territory and the king of the land needed a lot of ore to forge enough weapons, should his army stand against this threat. Whoever breaks the law in these darkest of times is sentenced to serve in the giant penal colony of Khorinis, mining the so much needed ore.
The whole area, dubbed "the Colony", is surrounded by a magical barrier, a sphere two kilometers diameter, sealing off the penal colony from the outside world. The barrier can be passed from the outside in – but once inside, nobody can escape. The barrier was a double-edged sword - soon the prisoners took the opportunity and started a revolt. The Colony became divided into three rivaling factions and the king was forced to negotiate for his ore, not just demand it.
You are thrown through the barrier into this prison. With your back against the wall, you have to survive and form volatile alliances until you can finally escape.

Gothic 1 is absolutely brutal.

You are nothing

You are worhless

You are just a bag of meat to puch some ore from

Until, you learn how to gain some ore.
Gain some respect.
Gain some skills.

Yes this game has its issues with controls and little bugs, but hey, there was no "patching" or other stupid thing back then.

This game has the ultimate character progression that really makes me have strong feelings even after 10 years later writing this review.

This is on my top list of rpg's and i played quite a lot. It has quite a large world to explore and all of it is hand crafted by the designers. Its not huge but not a computer generated world like in elder scrolls games. There are many interesting places to explore many interesting characters to meet and monsters to kill. There is no special area for strong or weak monsters. You can bump into strong monsters anywhere. So you should learn to escape and come back when you improve. An important rpg feature most games lack unfortunetely! And monsters are also hand placed by the designers and dont respawn frequently or level up with you. They are static throughout the whole game. It has very strong story and atmosphere. You feel like a rat to be kicked around at the start of the game. Everyone pushes you around. But in the later game you feel yourself like a real hero. Exploring the wilderness is an horrifying experience. There is surprise at every corner. I experienced this kind of feeling in very few games. Story unfolds slowly and its epic! And there is night/day cycle. Npc's sleep at night, do their daily jobs during day and some of them gather around fire and chat in the evening. Everyone has his own place to sleep and work. Most of the people dislike the controls but i think it is more than ok. You will get used to it in no time if you be patient and will like it. The story continues in the Gothic 2 and that game is even better! Gothic 1+2=Epic Journey on an Epic World! 9/10 I advice these games to every true rpg fan!

The best game ever. Better than Elder Scrolls, Witcher, or Bioware-Games.

I know it only says 2.5 hours but I played this game way back when it first came out. Yes the controls, graphics/acting is kinda eh but this game is great. The storyline is good even though the acting is kinda eh at times. Gothic 2 picks it up and makes it grand.

Regardless, I am writing this review because I think people should play it, it's a good 7/10 for it's time period which I played when it came out. NOW, for those who are putting up negative reviews cause the game doesn't work.

Go to STEAMAPPS/COMMON/GOTHIC/SYSTEM/Gothic.exe(It should be the G icon). Right click it, go to properties, compatibility mode, then put it to Windows XP SP3. Click apply, and then launch the game through steam. It might crash when quitting the game but who cares about that. The game works without any silly fan patches and etc.
