Airmen Update 1.4.6: Turning Overhaul

Join us for the next public playtest today (Monday) at 7pm ET.

This update focus on airship turning. Changes eliminate physics based effects to bring rudders away from reality and closer to expectation. Other turning changes like the addition of prop turning work to make building a ship that turns well much easier.

1.4.6

Major Features
  • Upright rudders now apply forces as if a "ghost rudder" was in the exact opposite position. Placing rudders solely in the front or back of your ship will function the same as placing them in the front and back.

  • A ship with no rudders will use it's propellers to turn. Reversing functions as it would with tank controls (A/D controls pivot direction) rather than car controls (A/D controls turning circle position). A ship built with rudders that loses them will switch to this scheme.
Minor Features
  • Added an angular speedometer needle so pilots can more precisely control angular velocity.

  • Reduced forces of rudders without reducing their top speeds. This lengthens the time it takes to reach top turning speed which was previously near instant. They will also diminish speed slower now making ships drift more (stabilizers reduce drift).

  • Increased beam HP by 300-200 so they are not a poor choice over the 3x1 armor root as a mounting point.

  • Added more built-in angular drag around only the airship's forward and right axis.

  • Small torques created by asymmetrical propeller placement will not turn the ship when moving forward or backwards.

  • Stabilizers will not apply force if it would work against user input. Use to make an airship slow its turn speed faster.

  • Added a "Join the Discord" button to the server browser scene to help bring players to the Discord community. This button opens a webpage to the server.

Airmen Update 1.4.5: Dynamic Level of Detail and Turning Tweaks

Join us on Discord for public playtesting Friday at 3pm ET and Saturday at 3pm ET.

Airmen 1.4.5 adds dynamic level of detail to most parts in the game. LOD helps take a load off graphics processing by swapping out the models of parts to something simple and quick to render when far away. The perfect balance of LOD means you'll never notice the impostor models at a distance and grab some bonus frames per second.

The fade away start distance can be configured to personal preference in the hangar setting menu. Those in dire need of FPS can minimize this value and see the low detail models at close range.

1.4.5

Major Features
  • Added dynamic level of detail to many parts. The fade point can be adjusted using the new Level of Detail Bias slider in the settings menu.

  • Angular drag is proportional to translational drag so balloon placement location does not influence turning speed. Ships with spread out balloons should spin faster and ships with collected balloons will spin slower.
Minor Feature
  • The escort point marker will stay constrained to the screen to prevent confusing with the delivery points.

  • The escort point marker is a diamond rather than square to further differentiate it.

  • Melee attacks cannot damage allies so numbers advantage in melee is more reliable.

  • Increased the max steepness the player can walk up.

  • A small slow is applied when moving downhill.
Bug Fixes
  • The player's hand was visible when zoomed with the spyglass.

  • Ships with mass exactly equal to lift could not ascend.

  • Sideways rudders did not turn out of the way when point turning.

  • Fixed the black outline of the crosshair in build mode.

About This Game

Airmen is a first person shooter where players build and battle their own custom airships. Start with an empty hangar and build a steampunk airship piece by piece. Once your ship is ready, you and up to four friends can crew your airship together into combat. Operate your vessel and destroy or commandeer others all in first person: pilot the ship and mount turrets, grab an axe for boarding action, or stay afloat using a repair hammer. Airships are destroyed exactly how they're built: piece by piece.

Features

  • Build your own airship from scratch with a growing catalog of 70+ parts!
  • Equip your ships with cannons, gatling guns, pigeon-guided missiles, rams, harpoons, railguns, and player operated turrets.
  • Battle with up to 8 airships with human or AI pilots.
  • Crew your airship with up to 4 friends or fly solo.
  • Board enemies and commandeer their ship using knives, axes, revolvers, rifles, and boarding charges.
  • Destroy airships by destroying individual components: an airship without engines can't power it's guns!
  • Complete challenges to unlock and equip 30+ player cosmetics.

Future Development

  • Grow the parts catalog and enable exciting new ways to build your airship.
  • Expand the audio framework to provide more sound based information.
  • Full settings menu to more finely tune your graphics profile and keybindings.
  • Implement player progression that aids learning the game and highlights veterancy.
  • Add more maps to battle above.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7 64bit
    • Processor: 2.9 GHz Dual Core Processor
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 650
    • DirectX: Version 10
    • Network: Broadband Internet connection
    • Storage: 400 MB available space
    • Additional Notes: GPUs that do not support geometry instancing will experience degraded performance.
