What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access was planned since the beginning for Northgard. We are big fans of strategy games and we know the level of perfection we need to attain with player experience, game flow and game systems. This can only be achieved with thorough testing and iteration. Simply put, we need experienced and passionate strategy players to make Northgard the best it can be!

Join us to make Northgard the strategy game of your dreams!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This will depend a lot on the feedback we receive. A rough estimate would be 4 to 12 months, 4 being the strict minimum we need to implement features we already have in mind and take your feedback into account.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There are 3 main areas we will work on during Early Access:
  • New playable clans with unique gameplay specificities
  • A full story driven campaign
  • A multiplayer (now available) mode
And a host of smaller features (improved trading and diplomacy options, more events, map specific victory conditions...)

As always, although we're very confident in the items on these lists, this is subject to change depending on Early Access feedback and testing.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is our Alpha version, meaning all the core gameplay is in a good state with some non-core systems awaiting implementation or optimization. Some parts of the core systems still require some tweaking, but the game is playable, enjoyable and relatively bug free.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Our plan for now is to have the Early Access version slightly cheaper than the full release. Both as a thank you to our testers and to reflect the amount of content that will be added during Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be using the Steam Community forums to gather and discuss feedback. Will also have an in game feature that you can use to send bug reports easily directly to us.”

PATCH NOTE #13 - the Clan of the Bear - v0.2.5526

Hello Northgardians!

A new MAJOR update has been pushed to Northgard and we are incredibly proud to present to you The Clan of the Bear!

The Clan of the Bear:

Stalwart protector of the land, the clan of Bjarki is home to the most resilient warriors. Hailing from the northern reaches of the realm, they are also very well suited to survive the harsh winters of Northgard.

Starting Bonuses:
  • Food production loss during winter is reduced by 20%
  • Instead of having reduced power, your military units gain 10% resistance bonus during winter.

Exclusive units:

Playing with the Clan of the Bear will allow you to have access to two new and unique units:

The Armored Bear is a powerful defensive unit that cannot enter enemy territory. However, its summoning cost being quite low (50 food), and its armor level quite high, it is the perfect unit to clear the territories surrounding your landing area early in the game.

The Shield Maiden replaces the Warchief of the other clans. She is a stalwart defender of her people and the reason the Clan of the Bear will never falter! In comparison with the other Warchiefs, she has a lower attack ratio but a tremendous defense that will allow her to lead her armies and survive until victory is hers!

Fame Bonuses:
  • Kindred Spirit: Having an Armored Bear or a Shield Maiden in an area increases local production by 15%
  • The Bear Awakens: You gain +5 Fame per enemy unit killed in an area with the Shield Maiden..

  • Hibernation: Your clan members will heal themselves during winter when in your territory.
  • Protector of the Land: Gain +1 Happiness per area with at least one military camp.
  • Shield Mastery: Shield Bearers cost less money and their resistance is increased
  • Harpoons: Fisherman's Huts can have one more Fisherman and their production is increased
  • Winter Festivals: Food production loss in winter reduced by 10% & +2 Happiness during winter.
We’re not going to say a lot more in this post, as you would have noticed we just pushed the update to you. So go… update, test, discover! Let us know what you think, we’re sure that you’ll want to find out how well we managed to balance the clan, and we’d love to hear your feedback on how we did.

But wait... There's more!

Changes to other clans:

We studied the balance in the game and made a few changes in the other clans specificities. Here are a few tweaks that we’ve made that should change the way you play a little.

The Clan of the Goat:
  • They no longer get reduced food consumption for their villagers, but they get the 30% feasting bonus from the start
  • The two free tools are now acquired when reaching 200 Fame
  • At 500 Fame, they will now obtain the new "Team Work" Fame step: their defense towers and all their military units gain 20% resistance when feasting.
The Clan of the Wolf:
  • The Berserker's attack power has been reduced by ~10%
  • The Conqueror knowledge now gives +100% against defense towers instead of +200%
  • When reaching 200 Fame, Assault now gives +15% attack bonus instead of +20%
The general AI :

Following our previous patch and your feedback (THANK YOU SO MUCH), we made many improvements to AI which should now prove to be a much stronger opponent - especially in Hard mode. Give us your feedback here!

Other changes
  • During winters, if you don't have Fur Coats (and if you are not playing the Bear clan), you will now get -10% attack power inside your territory (and still -30% outside of it)
  • Erudition Knowledge has been swapped with Shipbuilding, and has been changed to the following : "Increases Lore Masters production by 10%. Carved stones cost is halved."
  • Feeling safe now apply to all military camp buildings instead of Training Camp only
  • The order of the profession icons in the lower right corner has been changed to improve usability
Last but not least, thank you. Thank you to everyone who got behind Northgard and helped us launch the game successfully into Early Access. Thanks for buying it, sharing it with your friends, making videos, tweeting, liking, twitching, writing articles, reporting bug, sharing your ideas or just playing the game and having fun. Without you guys we wouldn’t be thinking so ambitiously about our future plans for multiplayer, adding more mechanics and generally pushing the game a lot further.

Thanks again and stay awesome.

Patch notes #12 : Player Profile and Strategic Map v0.1.5155

Hey everyone!

It's time for another patch for Northgard and another step towards v1.0!

On the menu today, we have:

Player Profile:
We have added a new Profile section in the main menu where you will find some statistics about the games you've played. These stats come with their obligatory Steam achievements of course, so have fun unlocking them! Please note that we will only start recording your stats from this patch on so previous victories will not appear.

Your rank will also be shown in multiplayer mode so you'll know if you're going into a match with other experienced players or not.

Strategic Map:
We've added a new set of buttons to the mini-map.

One allows you to toggle the display mode between resources (the default) and strategy, which will show all players' visible warband units and defense towers, allowing you to understand enemy positions and movements when things are heating up.

Other UI changes:
We made additional changes to the user interface:
  • Fixed a bug that was preventing people from clicking buttons on the end of game replay screen.
  • On military buildings (Training Camp, etc.) you can now toggle a "rally to Warchief" option. This means that once trained, the warrior will move directly to the current Warchief position.
  • Victory progress: we've put the fame score for other players/AI back however now their victory progress will only start showing when they reach 75%. You can still view current progress through the victory progress screen.
  • You can no longer see the icon of unmet clans on the victory progress screen.
  • You can now select your entire warband with a single click using the new button that has been added to your unit list.

DirectX Beta:
A fair few of you have reported some serious crashes or were simply not able to start the game at all. Based on your feedback it seems this was due to some faulty OpenGL drivers, and some graphics card manufacturers which didn't push updates to address this.

Over the past few weeks we've been working on a DirectX version designed specifically to solve these problems. This is now available to test through a beta branch of the game.

In order to test out the new version, right click on Northgard in your steam games library, then go to Properties, select the Beta tab and choose the DirectX Beta version. Wait the game to update and start it.

If DirectX Beta does not show in the beta list, restart steam to update it.

You can tell which version you are running by looking at the version (DirectX or OpenGL) showing at the bottom right of the title screen.

Please report any issue you might have with this version, depending on the feedback we might make it the default in our next patch.

We have received our first reports of some people cheating in game. Please keep in mind that Northgard is not using dedicated servers so we can't guarantee a 100% cheating free experience.

That being said, we have put in place some measures to prevent the most obvious ways of cheating, we hope that this will be enough to discourage the cheaters, although as you know, there's one in every crowd...

AI Improvements:
We have started working more seriously on AI, with the goal of having a very strong and challenging AI in Hard Mode. We only started a few days ago but we will keep you posted on how things are going.

Other changes:
We made numerous other changes and little fixes, here are the most important ones:
  • Prevented axe throwers and hunters from continuing to fire when a target is out of range (no more axes going across an entire tile!)
  • Fixed display of some global bonuses in attack/defense if you are not host in multiplayer (the bonus was previously correctly applied, but not displayed properly).
  • Added new dedicated skins to the buildings for training axe throwers and shield bearers.
  • Fixed bug where sometimes you could not place a field on fertile land.
  • Sailors Lore production is back to +1 instead of +1.5.
  • Circle of Stones Lore bonus is now +30% instead of +50%.
  • Amount of food traded to have the Giants join you has been reduced by 20%.
  • Ship Building wisdom is now +30% instead of +50%.
  • Coinage is now +20% instead of +30%.
  • Gear Upgrade and Young and Proud are now maxed to +25% bonus.
  • Young and Proud now replaces Sharp Weapons instead of Defensive Strategy.
  • End nerf-fest.

“Northgard is already worthwhile, and it could easily become a must-play for strategy fans if Shiro Games continues to add to and improve the already solid foundation that they’ve laid so far.”
