Post launch update

Last week we officially launched Marooners and we're very happy with the results and support so far, thank you!

With the help of your feedback we've addressed the most important requests: You can now switch server regions to play with friends on a much faster connection. Furthermore various bugs have been fixed. Lastly we continue the free steam key offer, but have raised the unlock requirement to two hours for new players.

  • Added new server selections. Default is America (as before), but you can now manually switch to EU, Asia or Australia based servers under the multiplayer options
  • The free steam key now unlocks after 2 hour of gameplay, however, all existing users only need to play 1 hour (although the in-game text will still mention 2 hours)
  • Updated network library, improves network performance
  • Fixed character not disappearing after player leaves
  • Added AFK kick (only in-game if local player is inactive for 2 minutes)
  • Better handling of disconnects mid-game
  • Options split in Graphics, Sound, Controls, Multiplayer en Other sub menu's
  • Fixed UI window bugs
  • Fixed \n in texts
  • Fixed UI Steam popup not disappearing
  • Fixed getting stuck in arena lava level

If there are any game breaking issues left, use the F6 button in-game to report bugs. Have fun playing Marooners!

A well made fast speed party game...

Fast, short and interesting competition with tons of unlockable characters and weapons.
Achievements are quite fun to get too.

The problem that plague this otherwise very good party game is multiplayer optimization and sychonization.
Even if you play a local game you still suffer from uncontrolable lags from time to time.

For a multiplayer game that really killed it for me and remove all the fun and that's why all the game server are all empty all the time.

On the flip side. Just play an hour and you can gift a key to your friend for free.. Yes.. a Fully functional game key.

4/10.. fix the lag issue and this game instantly became a 7 in score...

Pretty fun party-pack of minigames, with nice cartoonish graphics.

+Soundwork - Nice OST and sound effects
+Visuals - Various characters + some more characters to unlock and various weapons aswell, and each weapon can be set to each character.
+Gameplay - pretty fun and simple minigames, you could play simmilar back in old days in wc3, like Mario party ETC. The last man standing will be given opportunity to get bonus 25 gold pot, i think there are total of 6 or 7 mingames - not that much, i hope it will be expanded in the future. You have options for online muliplayer, playing with friends only and playing from the same household (like 2 people from the same computer)
Controls - are hard to change, when you go to the options the only thing you will see is a gamepad, you actually have to press 1 on keyboard to change the controls for the 1st player, etc.
++ FREE 2nd copy after 2 hours of playing the game ++

Problems atm: - Dead multiplayer - this game has 5 empty servers - eu na asia astralia and some other i think. Anyway i suggest to switch your default region to eu or na so more people play together. Only YOU can change that - buy the game, buy the game for your friends also, and you will have someone to play ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This game is pretty fun I was kinda reserved about buying it due to price and the fact that I read the games switch before finishing. Turns out that is part of the design and what keeps it from being boring you have to remember where you were when the last game stopped off so when it switches back something bad will not happen. For instance the lily pad level if you forget where your character was while cycling through other mini games you may just walk off the edge. I think the game mode switching is a positive thing for this game. What I would like to see is maybe more variety in mini games and maybe option to select which ones are in a match. Also I'd like to see something different with the capture the relic mini game.

Best party game ever.

Some other reviews mention server issues, but we only experienced one small issue in nearly 2 hours of playing.

This is a great game to play local multiplayer, even with non-gamers. You don't need to memorize a ton of controls and the mini-games objectives' are easy to understand. This game is playable by 5-6 years old and up but is enjoyed by all ages. I find it hard to find games which I can play with my family and have fun doing so, but Marooners fits the bill.

Early Access Review

Marooners is a fantastic party game that takes the usual style of gameplay and adds it’s own unique twist.

Early Access
Marooners is currently in an early access state but it seems like it's nearing full release. Everything plays really well (I think I encountered two bugs in my entire time of playing) and there is a nice amount of content (I am unsure if they plan to add more). In game there is also a handy banner telling you when the next update is due so you’re constantly aware of when to check back for new things and can know the developers are actively working on it.

General Gameplay
Marooners is an objective based party game that consists of many different minigames all with their own goals. Instead of choosing each minigame one by one though you'll find a unique twist to Marooners in which the game will switch between mini games randomly whilst you’re playing, saving where everyone was in that stage and reverting back to that randomly without warning.
There are many different minigames from ones where you’ll be running from a giant boulder whilst dodging objects to games where you’ll have to dig down as far and fast as you can avoiding unbreakable blocks on your way. In every game you’ll be competing against at least one opponent and you can play with five other people at any one time. Each minigame is unique and insanely fun!
You can find powerups in game such as a magnet to draw coins towards you, bombs to throw at your opponents and a speed boost for a few seconds all adding a minor advantage to your gameplay. They are dropped randomly in play so everyone has an equal chance to grab one...if they’re quick enough.
Throughout each minigame you’ll find yourself picking up coins and at the end all the coins are tallied up, the winner is whoever has collected the most across all of the minigames so even if you win the most minigames you still might just lose if someone else played it smarter. If you win a minigame though you have a chance to grab a trophy for 25 points meaning you are more likely to win if you are the sole survivor of each one!!!
To avoid repetitiveness in gameplay around half of the minigames are included in each rotation and they are completely randomized so it doesn’t feel like you’re ever playing the same two games twice.
After each full game is completed everyone who was playing will unlock a new cosmetic weapon or character for use in future plays. As I mentioned all the items and characters you can play as are superficial only and add no stat bonus or otherwise to your gameplay. I think this keeps things fair whilst still allowing you a great amount of customization. It also makes it easier for you to switch players or weapons without feeling like you are being penalized for liking one more than another.

Sound & Graphics
The graphics are really nice with a cartoony feel yet they don’t feel childish. Everything is vibrant without being too in your face. The soundtrack is pretty much what you’d expect from a party game but with a semi-tribal theme to it. Both work well in the game and give it that perfect party theme without feeling serious.

--- Great party minigames.
--- Online and Local play.
--- Ability to play Local and Online at the same time (up to 4 local and filled with online).
--- Up to 6 players (4 local + 2 online or up to 6 online).
--- 2 players per keyboard (optional).
--- Choice of characters & weapons to choose from (superficial only).
--- Cosmetic unlocks after each game for everyone, win or lose.

--- A few more mini-games wouldn’t hurt.
--- Not many players online at once currently.
--- No multipack on sale!!!!
--- When it’s just two players it feels like the minigames switch too fast.
--- No choice on how many minigames are included in each play.

Marooners is in early access still but seems very close to it’s full release. There are multiple minigames to keep you and your pals busy and the unique twist on the usual style of party games is great. Though there are not many players right now for online play if you have friends with the game or can play locally then Marooners is a great purchase. With active devs who listen to community feedback I can see this game reaching it’s full potential and being worth every cent.

Early Access Review

It's a really fun party game with little minigames similar to some of those you'd find in Mario Party. The point of each one is to get as much treasure as possible. There are 4 characters now (at the start of Early Access) with a variety of colors to choose from. It's still in development but plays great and the visuals are fantastic!

Basically how the game plays out is you play a minigame, but partway through it, you switch to another one. If you die in one minigame, you are out of that one but will still keep playing in the other ones. There will sometimes appear a really big treasure idol that's worth a ton so it's worth trying to get your hands on.

You can play Local, With Friends (this is how you can play with your buddies), and Online with other random people. The matches can be longer or quick but are usually around 5-10 minutes on average.

Overall, a ton of fun and easy to get into! Also the devs are awesome and very quick to respond to questions about the game! I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great family friendly party game for all ages! 10/10

I started playing this title without knowing a thing about it beforehand and I must say it's an amazing party game that's tons of fun. There's lots of variety in maps, weapons and characters with pure fast paced PvP and PvE combat that generates so many humorous moments. I absolutely can't wait to play with friends. Just need to make some first. A+

This game is ridiculous fun with friends. The playtime I currently have (1.5 hours) is all in one go.

A tip: Set the closest server in the "Multiplayer" options menu. Online multiplayer was pretty smooth for us after doing that.

Marooners is a collection of multiplayer mini-games with the potential to be quite a lot of fun. There is no single player component to this game so you will either need to enlist some friends or hit the online matchmaking to play it. Matches with up to six players compete to stay alive the longest and collect the most treasure in order to win the round. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, after an entire week of trying, I only ever managed to get into one six player game online. Most of the time I was lucky to even get into a two player game. Let’s face it, the game is a new release and has no dedicated playerbase at the moment so you will be lucky if you get to play the game online. Currently there is a promotion going on where if you buy the game you get another copy free to share with a friend. That friend in turn can share a copy of the game with someone else, and so on. Unfortunately even this promotion doesn’t seem to be enough to bring up the player base to a workable level. With that warning aside, let’s talk about my experience with this game when I actually got to play it.

There are two modes in this game. Party and Arena. In Party mode you play a variety of fun mini-games selected from the games small pool of mini-games. Each time you play you will be presented with a different random selection of stages from that pool. Occasionally you will enter Easter Egg mode and end up playing the same mini-game repeatedly until the end of the round. Your objective for each mini-game boils down to the same idea. Not just be the last one to survive whatever challenge the mini-game presents but also be the one who collects the most treasure. The games themselves are all fairly simple and straightforward. Perhaps a round will involve staying in the light to avoid being squashed like a bug or to keep moving to prevent the ground from falling out from under you. Watch out! If you are not careful a block could easily fall on your head, you could get scorched into cinders by a fire ball or even get bowled over by an Indiana Jones style boulder. Maybe digging down as fast as you can will help you avoid being crushed by the crumbling ceiling. Possibly you could try playing keep-away with an idol or climbing a tower to avoid getting burned by the rising lava, etc. There is enough variety in the mini-games to keep them fun. In the Arena, you are in a death match. Your objective is to stay alive while trying to kill everyone else. The longer you stay alive, the higher your score will rise. If you kill someone you also get additional points. The one who survives the longest tends to win the stage.

The twist to this game is that you don’t typically get to complete a mini-game before being thrust into another one. The game hops from game to game, resuming previously played mini-games exactly where they were prior to hoping out of it. This can lead to a bit of a fun chaotic experience as the game might have hopped out while you were in danger or mid-jump leaving you to have to quickly scramble once the mini-game resumes to avoid your demise.

I played this online in a two player match with a friend of mine. He had his microphone on so I could hear him laughing and commenting on things as we played. I’d have to say it sounded like he was enjoying himself as we played. I found it quite fun as well which is why I hope down the road this game picks up in popularity because the more players you have in a round, the more fun the round tends to be. As it stands right now, it is nearly impossible to get even a half full round or even just one other player most of the time. Currently, and this could just be me not noticing it, there is no way to join a public online server with a friend but you can make a private one. So if there happened to be a couple other people online when we played, we couldn’t form a team and then join the online server. We would have to both just join the Online server and hope to get matched up. I’m assuming this is to avoid people from teaming up and making it unfair to everyone else, but it still would be nice to play with friends too.

To help keep things interesting you get to select which character you want to play as. You can also choose which weapon they will be equipped with and which colour scheme you want your character to wear. As you play the game, you will unlock more character options and new weapons as well. The characters and weapons make no difference in gameplay, they are purely cosmetic.

So should you get this game? Sadly, right now with the Online component being a desolate place, I can’t really recommend the game unless you have a group of friends you plan to play with. If you can get a group of six people all playing it at once, this game has the potential to be incredibly fun. It’s simple enough that everyone should enjoy it and has enough variety to keep it from quickly getting boring. With only two or three players the game tends to get a bit dull due to the stages ending so quickly. The game’s current hope comes from the fact the Developer is kindly giving an extra key to anyone who plays the game long enough. That key can then be shared with anyone you choose and in turn, if that person plays it long enough, another key will be given. This potentially means that you would need to buy the game just once in order for you and five friends to all be able to play the game making this game an excellent value with very little need to bother waiting for a sale because you likely will never get a cheaper price than buy one, get infinite free. Give Marooners a chance and once word gets out about it, I could easily see it becoming one of your favorite party games.
