What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“With players providing feedback after they finish each early access section, we can use their invaluable opinions to shape the complete game. This includes information on what is running smoothly and what needs tweaking, what you would like to see changed or added, and even your moral support, all of which we will review to determine what can be changed for the better.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to have the final version of the game completed and released by the second quarter in this year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

In the full version we are hoping to include:
  • New and previously unseen locations..
  • Finessed gameplay shaped using some of the views and ideas of early access players.
  • Added in-game events and more hidden secrets to discover.
  • Improved character and object models.
  • A wider variety of forest scenery and props.
  • An expanded upon and complete storyline.
  • A full set of achievements.
  • Linux support.
  • Possible translation into other languages such as Spanish, Japanese, German and French.
  • Possible Oculus Rift support.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The completed game will be structured into four main segments that are comprised of many different interconnecting locations and events. At the moment the first and second section of the game is almost ready to be released. The other sections are structured and plotted out, with their content needing to be shaped and finessed.
As well as this the game’s main systems and interface are complete and more than half of the game’s sound is recorded.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The final version will cost more.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The original version of The Cursed Forest has a lot of fans; we hope that their support will carry over into helping us improve our new version of the game.
We want to improve the quality of the game by watching player’s Let’s Plays, reading player’s reviews, emails, messages on social networks and forums. We will analyse this feedback and compile a list of what needs to be done, and use this to determine what we can improve.”

Second Chapter Release

Greetings! Summer has arrived and we are finally ready to release another long awaited update. We decided to celebrate it by making the discount on steam.
The main improvements we have made in Section 2 are that it is more stable than before and contains new content. There are new notes continuing our storyline which will uncover some details about the Cursed Forest and its inhabitants. 13 new achievements have been added making 27 in total.
We are currently working on the third section of the game and this update includes a small preview of it. With the speed we are working on the third section we should have it with you very soon! For now check out some screenshots of it:

We made main things for the intro that will tell you a short game prehistory. We are currently working on some small finishing details and the soundtrack.

The current update is still using CRYENGINE 3.8.6, which is why some problems have yet to be addressed. The next version will be on the CRYENIGNE V that gives a more opportunity and there old problems could be solved but it also brings some new problems… It is good that it will still be updated and Crytek (CRYENGINGE developers) is checking their community feedbacks so it will help to solve these new problems.

The most valuable asset of CRYENGINE V will be its stability with Linux. It will allow playing. Therefore the next update will include a Linux version. On our computers we are using Ubuntu, Linux Mint and ROSA Fresh. It would be incredibly helpful to have your feedback is you are playing on Steam OS or another Linux product.

Here at Team Noostyche we are constantly checking your feedback for information on how to improve the game, from watching your Let’s Play and Streams, to reading reviews and answering questions received from the Steam community. This is incredibly helpful in our development and we look forward to hearing your feedback on our new update.

Change list:
+Section 2 achievements were added
+Part of the Section 3 has been added
+Include events that was off in the beta version
+New events in Section 2 have been added
+Section 2 previous events have been elaborated
+More sounds and music tracks have been added
+New loading screens have been added
+New game notes have been added
+Trouble with the sound after game loading has been fixed
+Double environment sound activation has been fixed
+Game crashing after activation of some particles has been stabilised
+Object disappearing in the house in section 1 has been fixed
+Collision in the different places has been fixed
+Planks in the ruins fall down correctly
+Crouching speed has been fixed
+Counting of the items on the level that is available has been added
+Navigation in the Section 2 has been refined
+Progress saving from one section to the other has been optimized
+Other small fixes

In the next big update we are planning:
*Transfer to the CRYENGINE V
*Full release of the Third section
*Game available in Linux
*Optimization update
*Refining of the previous sections
*Small issues fixing

ATTENTION! If you already played The Cursed Forest you will need to start a new game, your old save files will not work correctly.

Game keeps crashing in the same spot for seemingly no reason. I'm well.above...well above the recomended spec.

If I can get this resolved I'll change my review but not being able to play the game more than 30 min is a big issue.

It is a great experience so far, though a bit short at the moment. I finished the first and second chapters in about 2,5 hours. If these are any indication of the following chapters length that they're working on I guess the game will take about 6 maybe 7 hours in total. Which is totally acceptable considering the price they're asking. I mean, it's really cheap while it's so damn good.

+Graphics. The forest is really stunning. I'd love more nature based games made this beautifull.
+Sounds. These are very well done. It makes the whole forest feel alive and real.
+Music. Also nicely done.
+Atmosphere. The game is dripping with it.
+Immersive experience.
+Price! Well worth the money.

-Only 2 chapters available at the moment. Though the third one should release shortly. (The game will have a total of 5 chapters if I remember correctly.)

+/- This one is neutral, but it isn't that scary (yet). This might be build up with the following chapters they'll add though. There are a couple nice scares in it already for what it's worth.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.

What a game! A must for horror lovers like me. The forest itself is gorgeous and the atmosphere is amazingly crafted too. Not many jump scares but quality ones. It still needs to be polished a bit but it is worth every cent. Two chapters so far and hungry for more.

Thumbs up for a great team! Keep it up!

This game has great potential, but really loses its submersion in the notes. It's not that they don't create a good story line (minus a few weird and improbable situations), but the translation needs to be updated quite a bit. Also the jumpscares for the black shadowy figure needs a louder sting, also a bit of ambient build up to deliver the auditorial blow as well as some reworking. I found myself laughing at her, during the scenes of her in the dark when she makes that little groan... that needs to be removed in my opinion. Also if you make the scarecrow look a little dirtier and abused he'll be way better looking than he is now. The rabbit I felt should've done something else besides rustle the bushes, perhaps bolt out if you approach them and make some high pitched noise. Just little tweaks here and there this game will be gold!

Wow horror game that is finally made right! The attention to detail of this forrest is unbelievable. The forrest looks so beautiful. The atmosphere is creepy. The imersion in this game is unbelievable just don't look down, those rubber leg will break that imersion. For early access this game is unbelievably stable runs smooth on my end anyway. With so many poorly made horror games infesting steam right now (that are not in early access) i'm looking at you sylvio. It nice to see a early access title finally shines brighter, through the black hole that is the horror genre on steam.

P.S LOOK AT THE PRICE IT ♥♥♥♥ING CHEAP!!!!

Mysterious grunting from the treelines, scarecrows that move when you're not looking and monstrous rabbits lurking in cavernous burrows; The Cursed Forest is a pleasant break from half mutant serial killers stalking medical facilities and zombie hordes interrupting your attempts at deciphering another bewildering crafting system.
In its early stages, the game has all the atmosphere of a morbid children's story from the early 20th century, pointing you into the heart of the titular forest and inviting you to discover the eerie lore within. There's nothing so intense or vulgar as blood or guts on display here; the mood is held together by tales of disappearing villages, phantom deer and monsters that lurk in the lake and is far more of an exploratory experience than it is a QTE masher.
Very promising indeed.

Keep in mind there is a free version of this game which can be found here: http://www.indiedb.com/games/the-cursed-forest

Now with that said, this game is an updated and more recent version of this title. Currently, the game is only the first chapter, so about an hour of actual gameplay time. Devs have plans to release the second section within the month of November, and the third section shortly after.

The game features a dark and gloomy atmosphere, which adds to the eerie affect of being lost in the forest looking for clues to this mystery. Exploration is key in this game, where you must look around for clues and hints as to find out what's happening behind these dark trees, and what danger will lie ahead.

If you have any skeptisism, try the free version first, and if you would like to support the developers to make this more updated version and try it out yourself, purchase this by all means.

I ended up playing TWO brand-new horror games tonight. The other one was your typical, generic, steaming-pile-of-dog-turd whipped up overnight by some enterprising (read: cynical and money-driven) fourteen year-old (its name is "BlackShadows", in case you have a few bucks you don't have the heart to simply flush straight down the toilet). The other one...was this. Suffice it to say, this one won. By a looooooooong margin...

To say that this (still very) Early Access game shows "potential" would be as self-evident as saying that Michael Bay needs to be drawn-and-quartered in a public square (before posting said footage all over YouTube-land as evidence of what we civilised folk do to people who can't even make GIANT ♥♥♥♥ING ROBOT movies remotely exciting). Already, this game has more to offer than the vast majority of other "horror" games released onto Steam since, well...since basically all this Greenlight and Early Access nonsense started up, to be honest.

Rest assured, for once, this ISN'T just some "small development team" (read: one dude in his bedroom) who's whipped up a quick trailer and some semi-snazzy screenshots to dupe the idiot consumer (read: me) into giving them money for something which they put together in one afternoon (and maybe a tiny bit of the evening). Nosirree. The attention to detail in this game will make your JAW DROP. Why are there small rocks falling on me from above? Look up...holy ♥♥♥♥, there's a skinny, creepy-♥♥♥♥♥ black figure with red eyes running over a stone bridge above me! Wonder what happens if I wade any further into this lake? Holy old Jesus, I'm actually SWIMMING, in first-person no less, and what the...I've just been eaten by a GIANT FISH!! And all this in just my first hour of casually wandering about and wondering exactly what I'm doing, but honestly, it's all so splendidly atmospheric and immersive that I frankly don't GIVE a damn!!!

If only all Early Access games were this promising. It's obviously hard to give it a very definitive verdict yet, not least of all because disaster could still strike and the entire production team might all spontaneously combust, but at least we know these guys are in it for the RIGHT reasons. Trust me, you only need play this for ten or twenty minutes to work THAT much out. Oh, and for those of you out there who like comparisons? The games this reminds me of the most, thus far, are Among the Sleep and Kholat, with a hearty dose of fairytale-esque shenanigans added to the pot. This is definitely shaping up to be one of THE horror games of 2015. Or...2016, or whenever it gets finished. One game which might actually be worth the trouble of holding your breath over.

Verdict: 9/10.

After reading the IndieDB for the original version of this game, it seems this is basically a more interesting, less linear feeling, Into Blue Valley. So if you liked that then pick it up.

Quite enjoyed this. Decent atmosphere & setting; don't quite understand why I'm collecting random bones but benefit of the doubt that I will understand that in the full game & at least it isn't keys to unlock doors.
Also, for a game whose save menu seems to be written in a language that isn't english, the notes are remarkably well written with only mispelling Altar in the note about Altars, it gets written as alter but way better than english than some of the other indie horror titles.

I get the feeling it will end up as more walking simulator than horror & I probably will be essentially collecting keys by some other name, but I'm okay with that if the setting & story are good enough & this looks promising.
