Atavism Update 2.6.1

Atavism Unity 2.6.1 Changelogs

Release 2.6.1 is a hotfix update for Atavism that fixes many of the bugs that have popped up in 2.6 and implements some of the minor improvements that were missing, or were requested and seen as easy to implement and very useful.

The update is a much smaller one than 2.6 and does not have any database changes. That said, some changes to the system will affect existing characters, so it is recommended to wipe existing characters.

  • The Click to Move Controller has been greatly improved with support for moving to then auto triggering actions such as harvesting resource nodes or attacking enemies when clicked. Players can now also hold down the mouse button for continuous following.
  • A basic Portrait system has been implemented allowing the setting of portrait icons either based on prefab or class. These can be shown in the character selection scene and in game.
  • Account registration can now be disabled by setting the new atavism.allowaccountregistration property in to false
  • The remote account connector system has been improved a lot and now allows account creation as well as passing custom properties from the login/registration UI in Unity through to the connectors.
  • Merchant item refreshing has been added. If a merchant has a limited amount of items they will now restock based on the refresh time.
  • Resource Nodes, Regions and Interactive Objects from the server are no longer loaded on the client as additional game objects. This greatly speeds up loading of mobs when logging into a scene, and keeps the hierarchy much cleaner.
  • An Escape/Quit menu has been added. A Sound Options window has been added as well, allowing the changing of music and sound effect volumes.
  • The Server List UI in the Character Selection scene has been completed and is now ready for use.
  • The height of floating names above a characters/mobs head can now be set again on the MobController component.
  • Coordinated Effects now also have a sound volume setting, and will also be adjusted by the settings from the Sound Options window.
  • The oid of a chat message sender is now passed to the UGUI chat controller allowing more control over display based on the characters properties.
  • Quest Log now shows when a Quest is complete.
  • Abilities have a new “req Target” setting, which if un-ticked means an ability can activate even with no target selected.
  • Ability.cs file/class has been renamed to AtavismAbility.cs.
  • Floating chat boxes when players talk have been added. Adding to this, developers can now choose to have names/floating chat boxes rendered in the world rather than on the 2D UI overlay. Look for the FloatingNamesController in the MainWorld.
  • Colour options for tooltip titles based on item qualitie, along with other colour options. Check out your Tooltip object in your Canvas.
  • Scenes are now loaded asynchronously, allowing better support for loading screens.
  • Ammo is no longer unequipped when a weapon is unequipped, and can be equipped without a weapon being required
  • Multiple of an item can be purchased from the merchant. Hold down shift when clicking on an item to being up the dialog.
  • External mail purchases to be checked each time the mail list is requested, rather than having to re-log.
  • Revive Effect has had two new stat slots added.
  • A new “Only show known skills” option added to the Skills UI.
  • Click to place added for Crafting UI. You can now just click on an item to place it in the first empty slot of the crafting window rather than having to drag. Same goes for taking items out.
  • Dueling has been added! You can challenge another player to a duel by right clicking on their portrait and choosing “Duel” from the popup menu. Note this is an early test implementation and some bugs will occur.
  • Item positions can now be swapped in bags.
  • Skill UI has been updated to show how many skill points a player has, and allow spending those points. New game options added to switch between auto skill up system and purchasing skill ups.
  • Combat text now scrolls up!
  • Colours can now be set for friendly/neutral/enemy mobs/players. Check the settings on the FloatingMobPanel prefab.
  • Damage and speed is now displayed in weapon tooltips.
  • Additional slots have been added to the Atavism Mob Appearance system.
  • Added a new rotating property for players which will let other clients know when a player is rotating. This should smooth out how other characters look when rotating on the spot.
  • Added a new ThreatEffect, allowing the increasing or reducing of threat on a target.
  • Durability/Repair system added - instructions to come.
  • Weight system added - instructions to come.
  • New admin panel added to make issuing admin commands (such as teleporting, generating items etc) much easier to use. Type /admin to bring up the window.
  • Multiple equipment display components can now be added to the same prefab, allowing multiple models to be attached or activated for a single item being equipped.

  • Changes have been made to the Atavism Editor to future proof it for Unity 5.4
  • Integer and Float fields in the Atavism Editor can now be typed in much more easily.
  • Instant Effects will now play the Pulse Effect when they are applied.
  • A new TeachSkill Effect has been added, allowing abilities to teach a character a skill.
  • Abilities and Quests can now be activated/started through Dialogue actions/options.
  • Numerous new Game Settings added to change behaviour of resource nodes including the ability to turn off the chance to fail.
  • Currency rewards have been added to Quests.
  • Newly created stats in the Stats Plugin will now be auto applied to existing character templates.
  • Changing the name of an entry in the Atavism Editor that creates a prefab will now auto delete the old/wrongly named prefab.

Standard features such as chat system, combat, full inventory system and much more are also included in Atavism. The best part is you can easily use and incorporate other assets from the Unity Asset store into Atavism which will expand it even further for you. If you require advanced and customised features you can purchase the AGIS Server code package which allows server side plugin creation. These plugins can also be sold to other developers. Please note some basic knowledge of Unity and networking is preferred for setting up Atavism On Premises server, but if you are not comfortable with networking we do offer a cloud server system which you can get directly from our store and requires no knowledge of networking as its setup for you

Atavism relies on a few other programs to function and some network changes (such as opening ports to allow remote connections). It is suggested that you are comfortable with installing and setting up programs and editing computer and router settings. Guides are provided, but can be tricky for those not experienced with computers.

Our Mission
Our main goal was to develop a tool that allows developers to easily get their games going and setup on a network. Combining Atavism with Unity gives developesr teh best of both worlds.

(Update: I copy/pasted my review below to Steam Support and was given a full refund.)

I have been battling ... and battling... and battling this software for a week. The setup is insanely insurmountable.

The $70 buys you a .zip file with a plugin inside.

You must first install:

Unity (free version)
Java SDK
Setup the Databases
Install the plugin
Use ALL of the Powers of God, Allah, Vishnu, and Oprah Winfrey to setup the plugin.

**When AND IF... I get responses on their forums/email.. they are short one sentence reponses with almost no real help so far.**

I used the Youtube community for the most part to get as far as I did. Only to fall into a hole of script errors and plugin lockups.......

I'm sure the program has potential .. and the developers are working hard on their product, however this is clearly "their project"... Anyone outside of thier private community (forums/chat/skype) trying to use this will be faced with confusion and turmoil.

In the end you will just find yourself wishing you didn't waste $70 on a week's worth of headaches. Leaving you empty and without any form of etertainment value for your money.

Well, I bought this thinking that their claims "anyone can make an MMO" would be backed up by a user friendly peice of software. Unfortunately what I got was a .rar file with instructions that are requiring me to go through the configuration process of MYSQL, Cygwin, Unity and Java. Honestly I'm going to be trying for a refund. This is absolutely ridiculous and nothing they claim on their main page is accurate. I highly recommend you save your money and invest in something else.

A bit of a pain to work with if you don't know much about it so the statement of it being " Anyone can create a mmo " is out there. Not to mention you get a limited version of Unity and it cost 75 usd a month according to them for the full version of unity. This is the issue I have ran into.

Edit as of June 6th 2016

I have been banned from the Atavism fourms. As Neojac did not list a reason I may only assume the reason why is posts made that factually pointed out reasons not to purchase the game when others asked.

It likely also had to do by reposting an e-mail that Neojac sent to me (and all Atavism users) on June 5th stating that all Atavism accounts were hacked and all usernames and passwords had been given out.

Not only were my posts deleted a great number of posts which commented on the negative qualities of Atavism was deleted.

Oddly enough a thread asking for those who created a project with Atavism that was in Beta likewise was deleted.

As posted on the offical fourms by a user who is not me was the question if Atavsim3 will come up with a new price tag. This is due to with Atavism 2 the team of Atavism created a new MMO (Arcfall) and then asked Atavism users to stress test it which halted the working on the unstable patch (which fixed the problem of them being hacked).

These are the reasons why I cannot recommend you purchasing this product. Not due to the $399 entry price point which requires $4000 for the full upgrade, not even due to Neojac banning people without a reason (reason spot was blank), but because there is less expensive, better coded and maintained software on the Unity store.

It has been about a year since I purchased Atavism and I wrote my initial review which was a negative. After which the developer Neojac spoke to me and worked on some issues. In the end he asked me to change my review to a positive one which I did. So here is the update.

Over a year later the project is not finished. The road map has changed and the product I purchased is no longer the one sold here. Instead the company has moved from a MMO creation tool kit to offering hosting so you can create a MMO. Gone is the dream of creating as many MMOs you want (be it just small worlds for your friends or developing several to see what someone might like and then focusing on what the people choose) as the license is now for one world not unlimited. Likewise the new starter package now offers less people being able to log on then the previous, however one thing has changed the price. It has gone up.

Now the increase in price seems to be focused on the new strategy of this company which is to create a monthly service where they will host the server they rent to you. $24 a month gives you a small development server so you can build your game upwards to a few hundred a month to have a game with a limit of 2000 people on at once. (Neojac mentioned this was due to the belief that games with more people could afford to pay them more).

I do not fault them for turning to a subscription based plan after all a company needs money to survive. The problem however lies in the fact that this is not a finished product. Also users such as myself paid money which was going to a finished product which no longer will exists. Legacy members such as myself was given an option when this change in services occurred. Either pay several hundred dollars within a few months to upgrade our package or we would need to pay the new upgrade price $3000.

Now to the product itself. It is not finished, the developers have worked hard and what is there is pleasant. However programming is needed to make this MMO despite the claims. One of the licenses is to have access to the engine in order to program changes. Likewise UMA which is a tool used in Unity (for creating multiple characters) while supported nicely in Atavism will require some coding knowledge to fully utilize. On the official Atavism Skype channel the users will mention that yes coding is needed and will recommend at least a year’s worth of C# classes to know what you are doing.

In conclusion due to the lack of a grandfather clause for the product I purchased being standard (it is a case by case basis), the change of the business plan to have me the developer pay this company additional money for my success, and no real end in sight for when this product will be completed I cannot recommend it. I apologize for changing my initial stance of not recommending this product when asked to do so I had believed things would be quite different and I should have waited until the product being sold was a reality.

Atavism uses Unity allowing it to compile to many platforms (including Android now). An added benefit is these platforms can play with one another. It is a powerful tool and does make things such as make many task such as building the game world and adding quest chains much easier.

Anyone wanting to make a full scale MMO is going to need a team. A team will need to know how to use Atavism ( they will need to know how to use Unity and unless they are going to outsource all artwork in the game they are going to need to know how to use software such as Blender. Having someone that knows C# and Java is needed as well.

The other route is making a persitant role playing world. Either something for friends table topping or along the lines of the old RPing NWN & NWN2 persitant worlds. This allows more custimization than either game allowed.

I bought this thinking it should be fine, it might be something fun to do, but no. I spent around 2 days trying to install this, looking on there wiki, forums, youtube and even someone else's youtube but nothing works even following what is done/said step by step seems to lead to failure. So unless you know 100% you can install this and get it working, and also have a use for it, then I wouldn't recommend buying it. It's a good concept but a horribly broken software, save your money and don't buy this, if you do want to buy it though I'd recommend to wait for some sort of update to fix it.

Also once you buy it and extract the files you need to download and install more software to even be able to run it.

This collection of assets is great if you know how to use them and have a fair amount of time and knowledge prior, to set things up. I will re-iterate people who are expecting a piece of user friendly software, this package is out the water ... But for those who have the time and knowledge, they should seriously consider this, as it is great! Very powerful and once it is going, thanks to the Unity engine it is expandable. You should be able to create a great MMO!!!! Highly rated!

Not that hard to set up but quite some stuff to take in mind.

Knowing Unity3D is an absolute must to use this piece of powerful software to it's max and to really turn your own game into something unique.

Unlike most of the people, I had no problems setting up the software.
But once everything was set up, most of the promised features are either lacking or severely bugged.

Updates happen very slow & always seem to miss the promised dates on the roadmap, and when an update finally hits, it is only a minor one & lacks the promised updates.

Don't get me wrong, the software allows you to set up a basic standalone server which isn't too bad, but it has fixed 'plugins' which you can only edit (get the source code) if you upgrade to 270$ package.
Most plugins available for this pack either lack customisation options or are bugged/broken.

The client part (in Unity) is a good start, with an easy to use interface. But provided examples & scripts lack decent comments and most things are far from what you can see or read on their website & 'trailer'.

Even though this package had not what it promises & is not what I was looking for, I will still recommend it for people with a basic understanding on how a pc works & how to install 'developer tools' (& Unity experience ofcourse).
You are able to make a standard mmorpg with basic features (as of now: no pvp, no grouping, basic crafting & inventory, basic skill system, basic enemy system, no server-based collisions,...) with this package in no-time.
