Just started playing throught this with two friends, it's ♥♥♥♥ing awesome.

1. You each have a different role and different gear associated with it
- Champion: Straight up heavy DPS, uses big two handed axes and maces, he can also use 2 handed swords with one hand.
- Ranger: Agile DPS, can dual wield swords/maces/hammers and can use greatswords.
- Lore-Master: Healing and procective magic, she can also use her staff as a melee weapon when needed.

2. ♥♥♥♥ING LOOT IS AWESOME. Each of you get your own seperate loot that covers all 3 classes, so you'll need to take breaks every now and then to give eachother the items for their class and vice versa.

3. Combat is kinda like Dragon Age on a console. You know, the hack and slashy ♥♥♥♥. But it's extremely satisfying for all classes.

The overall feel for the game is kinda like an MMO and Borderlands mixed together, it's really well made and is up to standards even 3 (nearly 4) years later.

If you've got an odd number of friends that you regularly play games with (like myself), I would definitely recommend this to you!

Game crashes over and over again after several hours of gamplay. It is a known bug with ATI video cards and will never be fixed. Buyer beware.

If you own AMD do not buy this game it's basically unplayable once you hit the end of the ♥♥♥♥ing game!

Which is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on chapter 8 Carn Dum you cannot actually advance it's over the game will crash and stutter constantly and unfortunatly this is the end of game for you and if you try and let your friends advance to get past the unpassable zone oh no sorry game prevents you from getting achivements and stops saving of the game so it's pointless playing at this point

If you have Nvidia then awesome get this game it's fun 3 player coop with mates but avoid if you have AMD AT ALL COSTS!

Play time: 16 hours 30 min (main story and most side quests, listening to most conversation)

Pros:
+Good action RPG combat, severing orc limbs is fun
+Lots of well put together LotR story elements/locations for fans to enjoy
+Enough levelling and loot to keep things interesting

Cons:
-Gameplay can probably get repetitive if you play more than 1-2 hours each time
-Combat system and leveling/skill tree isn't that deep for hardcore players
-Fiddly character change system
-A few glitches may crash the game

Game is great for using the Xbox 360 controller and playing on the TV from the couch.
Graphics performance R9 280X, 1080P max settings: 60 FPS (V-sync) all the time except for a few stutters when loading new textures.

If you will enjoy LotR: War in the North depends on how you're going to play the game, and if you're a fan of the LotR world. The game is best played casually a few hours at the time, If you play it that way, and you're a fan, the game will probably keep you entertained all the way through and has a lot going for it when it comes to the story and locations.

If you're not interested in the Lord of the Rings world, and come just for the action RPG, you'll probably find the game lacking, especially if you put 3-4 or more hours in to the game each go, then the game will probably feel quite repetitive.

The game tells a story of three heroes (man, dwarf, elf) indirectly helping the fellowship during the LotR story. You run in to quite a few characters from the books/movies, and visit familiar locations as Bree and Rivendell. The locations in this game generally look great, and all the characters has quite a lot to say, so the story builds up well with lots of background information available if you like to listen to conversation.

The main part of the game has you battling mostly orcs in a third person action RPG style. The combat style doesn't differ much through the game, you can select any of the three characters (but switching between them is only allowed upon clearing a section of the current chapter, or after visiting towns, and is a bit clunky), use a light or heavy attack, ranged attacks and magic/skills. You level up and unlock/improve skills and get better gear/other loot that improve stats, but the gameplay doesn't change that much. You're still hacking/shooting at orcs most of the time.

I really enjoyed the combat, and the levelling/loot was enough to keep me interested all the way through, and combat is fun. Sometimes after getting the enemy HP down enough you get a prompt to use a heavy attack for a limb severing finish that for me never got old. Just as satisfying every time.

The game has some nice boss battles as well, and every chapter has a few events that mixes things up.

At the final chapter, there was a game breaking glitch, for some reason when navigating the tunnels the game got really choppy and crashed when the frame rate got too low. Apparently a common problem, and the solution was to set the graphics to minimum and get through that section with as little on screen as possible (aiming at the floor while moving helped). When out of the tunnels, restart the game and everything is well again.

I enjoyed the game and will do a "New game+" some day.

I was pleasantly surprised to find just enough LOTR lore to make you feel like you're really part of Middle-Earth's war against Sauron. That, and just enough characterization make this game a very good one instead of the average coop I was expecting.

Also ; EAGLES.

It's a good game for fans os The Lord of the Rings. With it you can travel to some places you've always wanted to. It does have some issues while playing by yourself (the companions AI is weak) but with friends it's really cool. So, if you want to know something more about the The Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit and kill some orcs that's the game for you!

This game is enjoyable to play, as the main aim of the game is to slice orcs. Some people say it gets boring after a while as the whole game is the same (to slice orcs) Which gets true, But i always seem to go back and play it again in a few weeks. The combat is great, and uses a variety of skills (depending if your Man,Elf or Dwarf) to defeat Agandaurs minions. The only other problem i had with this game was it is too short, There are about 8 levels (Including Fornost,Barrow Downs, Ettermoors, Gundabad, Mirkwood, Uglost Lair, Nordinbad and Carn Dum) This roughly takes about 15-25 hours to complete. Of course, you then play it at a harder difficulty afterwards and find new armour, weapons etc. Even though the game is fasirly short I still highly recommend it as it is one of my faviourite games, and is very fun to play.

This review will be short and informative:

HIGHLY recommend if you are:
1. NOT using ATI cards
2. Planning to play it Co-Op with friends that also met #1
3. You will be the Co-Op game host.
3. Don't care about achievements (if you are the client)

STAY Away from this game if you are:
1. Using ATI cards
2. Planning to play Solo
3. You care about achievements and will be the client in a co-op game

It's not a bad game per se, but it's also not a very good game.

The story was... forgettable. It did a great job of sticking to the canon and using content from within Middle Earth, but it just felt pointless. I never once cared about the characters, with the exception of Beleram. Beleram was an interesting character, but that was partly to him being a Great Eagle.

Character models look nice, but the environments are bland even for a 2011 game. Clearly a console port, but even console games in 2011 were more visually stunning than this.

As for length, I put about 10.5 hrs into this game with one of my friends. Not short like a lot of games today, but also not at all what you would expect from an Action RPG.

The one thing that frustrated me throughout my playthrough was the item management. There isn't a simple way to compare gear with your currently equipped gear, other than a red or green arrow indicating -/+ power. Items you pick up in the game world serve little to no purpose other than selling at shops.

The combat was very unsatisfying. Mashing X & Y on my controller was what I expected from what is basically a 'beat-em up' action title, but that was the extent of the combat. You could do 'power' moves by pressing RT + X or Y, but those had to cool down before you could do them again. Finisher moves look cool, but to do one of those all you have to do is wait for a yellow triangle above the enemy's head, which felt very much like a quicktime event. I think the game could have been a lot more engaging for the player if it had some kind of combo system.

Co-op is where this game shines, sort of. You and up to two other friends can run through the game together, taking control of one of three main characters. My only annoyance with the co-op experience was the voice chat. There was no option to adjust the chat volume and the developers felt the need to make the voices have special DSP effects based on the type of environment your character was in. The effects were cool for about the first hour, but then it just got annoying.

War in the North has no replay value at all. You can play on a harder difficulty on NG+, but it's sadly not worth playing a second time unless you just feel the need to 100% the achievements. I really wanted to like this game, because I love LotR, but in the end I was just left unsatisfied by the whole experience.

War in the North is a great hack'n slash RPG. The gameplay gets a bit repetitive and grindy, but the story (set in the LOTR universe) is fun and believable. Amazing performance for its graphics. Overall pretty good, can get insanely difficult at times though.

Great hack and slash game with coop up to 3 players total. The graphics are a bit sketchy, you'll run into some clipping, and you may encounter some glitches which stops you from completing side quests. Also, you cannot mute your coop partners voice (mic) or use push to talk. You and your whole team will be speaking freely, so dont fart, cough, spit, puke or crunch loudly or you may annoy your team lol. There is a workaround for this that worked for my friend, but it did not work for me. I got this game for a great price and it was well worth it.

While it certainly isn't the best hack n slash action game you'll ever play, Lord of the Rings: War in the North proved to be a fun game despite its flaws. This game was designed as a multiplayer experience, so you should play with a friend if you can, if not prepare yourself to constant variations is gameplay as you'll have to change characters more often than not. In the end this was not a setback, as each has a slightly different play style so changing characters (ranger, elf, dwarf) proved to be varied and amusing.

This game is first and foremost aimed at Lord of the Rings / Tolkien fans. If you count yourself among those, you'll be satisfied. I played this game as I was reading The Silmarillion again which proved to be a good choice as the story is not focused on the main events at the end of the Third Age but on the fight against the forces of Sauron in the north of Middle Earth. Don't expect Bethesda or Bioware levels of lore in this game, just relax, enjoy the story and focus on what this game does best - combat.

The fights are intense, combos are easy to execute and enemies' limbs fly all over as you chop Orc after Orc. If you want a good hack'n'slash experience, look no further.

Bottom line is, if you own an ATI card, don't buy this game.

Even for $5, it's not worth the headache of constant crashes and disconnects. I wish I had scrolled down the reviews more to have seen warnings about ATI cards. It started out as a pretty great co-op game, with slightly jaded graphics and not top level game mechanics, but still playable and enjoyable.

Then chapter 2 hit, and it all went to hell in barrow downs. Missing textures, random disconnects and system crashes at various intervals, especially in the middle of hard fights - problems either for you or friends connected to your game. The first few were just a minor annoyance because the game was quite fun but, when it kept happening, my friends and I just had to give up in frustration. It was a sad thing too, because the game is pretty addictive.

The biggest annoyance for me is how the game's minimum requirements actually state that ATI cards older than those from 2006 will run this game, and how that is basically untrue after the first chapter. I begin wonder if I can get my money back just for that partially false statement.

I don't want to go through the trouble of listing my system specs, but it runs anything recent like DA:I or FC4 on ultra without issues. I use an ATI 290X.

It took me close to 20 hours to finish this game and I have not played it in co-op mode. The multiplayer lobby is always empty.

I cannot with honest heart recommend this game to even to the most hardcore LoTR fans. Let me explain why:

This is a console port, one of the worst I have seen yet.

The UI is awful and there is no way to remove the annoying overlapping key binds from the screen.
I haven’t seen any game more linear than this. Invisible walls everywhere and i mean EVERYWHERE. You can go only in one direction: forward.
The combat is extremely boring and repetitive; you will be doing the same moves over and over again in a course of the entire game. The skills (spells? or powers?) are simply laughable.

The only positive thing I can say about this game is related to the story. The point when you meet few of the characters from the original movies is cool. Well it is, until you get to hear them speak - the voiceover wasn’t done by the movie actors, but by some random people.

The graphics are bad even on the highest settings, sometimes the game freezes and/or crashes for no reason. There are too many unfixed bugs like floating dead enemies or enemies stuck in walls.

I say, don’t waste your time and specially money on this game.

The game is a jack-of-all trades, borrowing parts from many games but not successfully exceling in any category. I would review comments regarding corrupt save files and crashes before purchasing. I was fortunate to make it to the last chapter before I couldn't proceed (crashes in same area).
