About This Game

Portal Stories: Mel is a community made, free modification for Portal 2 based in the Portal universe.
It tells the story of Mel, who meets a new personality core and faces an undiscovered threat to the Aperture facility.

1952, in the early years of Aperture: Science Innovators, Cave Johnson’s scientists experimented with whatever they wanted. Not everything worked as it should have though, but that wasn't going to get in the way of the progress of Science! Mel unfortunately took part in a faulty test called the Aperture: Science Innovators Short-Term Relaxation Vault, falling asleep for years. When she finally wakes, there is a fake Cave Johnson telling her she needs to escape the facility and a new device called the Aperture Handheld Portal Device, her mind races with questions. “Who is this imposter Cave Johnson?” “What happened to the facility and its staff?”

"What happened to me?"

This rendition is a fantastic bridge between the original and the sequal. It is even more impressive that such work could come from a 3rd party team, well done.

The best story mod i've ever played, it's so good you may easily think it's a Valve game.
Everything from the voice acting, story, level design, original music, everything is extremely well made.
I loved how they managed to make the puzzles more challenging while never becoming frustrating, the story flow works so well, presenting full new locations while keeping the old test chambers.
This is literally better than many 60€ games out there.

This game is an extension to Portal 2 and is almost like a prequel with sequel elements added in. In this single player story, you tackle puzzles that are extremely difficult in hopes of shutting down an unknown power that is deteriorating the facility.

You could say this game's like Portal 2, but without the emotional bond. What replaces that bond is a drive to defeat malice instead. Considering how many puzzles there are and how extremely well-thought out each of them are, this game is most certainly worth money, but can be played for the wonderful price of free as long as you own Portal 2 already.

Some newer elements that are heavily relied upon in the puzzles include but aren't limited to
-Block destruction via buttons
-Block stacking
-Gravity (But not momentum)
-Emancipation barriers (discintigrates humans as well as objects)

I'm not a fan of the developers using block destruction via buttons as a requirement to solve puzzles, but it does open up several opportunities for puzzles that would otherwise be impossible.

All in all, definitely worth playing if you feel up for a Portal challenge that makes you think outside the box.

It's a perfect extension of the portal universe in a way that the paid mods can only hope to achieve. It's clever, complicated, sometimes hilarious, but more often than not very intense.

For one thing, the scenery, the music, all of it, bring together a feeling of utter desolation and loneliness in a way that Portal 2 could only hope to accomplish, and you know very well that you're in the bowels of a gigantic facility that's so large it has its own weather system inside. Most importantly, you can tell the development team has put amazing effort into it, from the difficult level design to the original soundtrack by Portal's most official unofficial musician, Harry101uk (Harry Callaghan)

The only issue that some players would encounter is probably the sheer difficulty of the levels. Playing through once takes about 10-15 hours for the average player, and you will find yourself almost ragequitting more than once, only to realize the ingenious timing, momentum, or precise portal placement that you needed to solve the level. I've played through 3 times now, and it's still harder than portal 2!

Overall though, I'd give the game a solid 9.5/10 for how vivid an experience it is, and I would definitely recommend any portal fan get it as soon as possible.

Whether you just got the game, or you're an experienced and dedicated player, this game will really teach you how to think with portals.

This mod is a full-length Portal game for the price of none. The environments and storyline all fit seamlessly into the Portal universe as established by Valve, and there\'s a full new story for you to discover.

The mod features two modes: the somewhat misleadingly named Story Mode, and Advanced Mode. Story Mode is simply the easier of the two, with many of the tests reconfigured to have simpler solutions; Advanced Mode provides exactly the same storyline, but with more challenging puzzles. And they are challenging, mostly abandoning the gel-related tests of Portal 2 in favour of more logic-based puzzles built on innovative uses of portal physics that even the original game sometimes didn\'t use. Playing the two modes through together gives at least a full game\'s worth of material to play through.

The developers also manage to catch the humour of the original, both in the story\'s writing and in gameplay (many of the achievements require dying in specific and determined ways). Add in a solid script and voice acting (including a decent Cave Johnson impression, and a not-so-decent one), and there\'s no way fans of Portal shouldn\'t give this mod a run.

If you loved Portal 1 and Portal 2 you *have* to get this. It is the best made fan game I've ever played and keeps very true to the Portal universe while interconnecting with the original games very nicely. With the two different ways to play it this will keep you busy for a while and with it being free how can you go wrong? Highly recommended!!

Portal Stories: Mel * 9/10

The Sequel-Prequel-Midquel We needed but not the one we deserve... Or was it the opposite, I can't recall right now...

I've stumbled upon this for pure coincidence but given the premises I decided to give it a shot:
You're Mel, a new test subject that joined the new and growing Aperture science in 1954. You will reach a sleep chamber to wake up in what now only resemble the aperture science structure you've walked in as it's ruined, covered in vegetation and damaged.

If I went further I'm afraid I could spoil something so I'll stop here because even though the story is very well written and interesting that's not the only valid point in Portal Stories: Mel.

Let's talk about the art and visual impact of the levels: they're incredibly accurate, full of details, immense in large areas and well designed with care for the context in closed ambiences. Everything is designed and shown us with maniacal attention for everything and this is really impressive considering this is just a mod for free.

Considering this is a free mod for Portal 2, it obviously uses the now quite old Source engine, but the level design and the maniacal care for details will deliver you a greatly enjoyable experience making you totally forget this engine now has quite an age.

The Riddles and puzzles are way more difficult and intricated, and re-playing portal and portal 2 after Mel makes them look like a joke compared to this amazing mod. You will have to reason more creatively, repeatedly combine the elements of the test chambers because underestimating these new tests would be a mistake. Every element, every surface or panel is there for a reason, and it won't be rare to look for little details, or hidden surfaces to find a way out.

Characters Are well written and characterized, and their lines as well, even though the constant presence of "an enemy entity chasing you" (spoiler-free) has certainly its stressing effect and influence it unfortunately lacks the unique and inimitable sarcasm and charm that belongs to GLaDos. Same for other characters, even though they're still well written, funny and nice, they're not as funny as Wheatley nor Cave Johnson.

The surprising soundtrack is... Well surprisingly great, Prism Studios REALLY worked so hard and deep to deliver a great and complete product and they didn't underestimate the soundtrack at all, as it's great, gives an amazing atmosphere, has the same "technologic" mood as Portal 2, but it has its own sound at the same time.

Surprisingly this mod has cutscenes as well. You're allowed to have high expectations but not odd expectations, as there will be quick and small scenes, but the very best lies in the ending cutscene that literally left me speechless.

So no further delays, if you enjoyed portal 1 & 2 just download and play it, it's free, so you have no excuses!

+++PROs+++
  • EVERYTHING. This Standalone mod has everything, Great story, soundtrack, levels extremely detailed, "dialogues", Very tough puzzles and riddles and on top of that...
  • FREE. ...Yes, it's free and I'm not sure if I should say this but they should make it pay because this mod has damn Value!
---CONs---
  • CHARACTERS. There's nothing wrong with any of them, but I had to put a Con. I really liked characters, even Mel, but none of them has the same charm, humour or sarcasm as the original Portal Characters do.

As a huge fan of the portal series and a very big fan of their storyline, I can say that this game was so well made that it fits right in between portal and portal 2. The puzzles are harder than the original games which is a plus and the characters are easy to get attached to. Overall, amazing game and it's for free! Don't even think about it, just get it. You are going to want to see the ending, trust me.
