Dirt Rally is by far my favourite racing game. I need to make it clear that I'm not a car guy, and certainly not generally a 'sim' person. Rally is probably the most hardcore sim I've played. What's nice (and I know a lot of racing games do this) is that you're in control of how difficult you'd like the experience to be to some extent. Locking your perspective to first-person only, disabling assists like ABS brakes and UI hints will certainly make the game harder, and in turn earns you a reward multiplier. I wasn't expecting to enjoy making it as realistic as I could, but it's incredibly fun.

For the most part you're racing against yourself. It's Rally; It's your time that's on the line. No matter how many times I've played the same track, I need to listen to the calls for what lies ahead. Sometimes I find myself daydreaming and just bombing down the track, inevitably soaring off a cliff or straight into a tree because I got too deep in thought. But I know it's my own fault. It wasn't a bad AI opponent or bad controls, everything that happens is because of how in tune I am with the car on a moment to moment basis.

The reason I've put so many hours into this game is the daily, weekly and monthly challenges. When I know I can only put 20 minutes or so into a game for an evening, I launch Rally and do the two daily challenges. A few extra moments? Do a few tracks in the weekly or monthly challenges. You're given feedback at the end of each track as to how you've ranked against everyone else competing in the same event. It's one of the few games where you can noticeably and immediately see improvements in your own performance which is remarkably satisfying. It can also be frustrating to be pushing yourself during an event to beat other player's times, only to cut a corner when expressly told "DON'T CUT" and find yourself slammed into a rock wall. This risk/reward nature is what makes Rally so exciting.

This game can be really tough at the beginning, especially when compared to more arcade-focused racing games. Once you get a grasp on the physics and a good sense of a car's weight, there is no better feeling than nailing a hard curve or corner that has given you trouble in the past. As I said, I'm definitely not a car guy, and yet I find myself tweaking my saved vehicle set ups, trying to conquer turns and shave seconds off my times on tracks I've played hundreds of times. That's not something I was personally expecting from a racing game, and it's why I will continue to play Dirt Rally for the foreseeable future.

Here's some initial thoughts you might have when you play the game for a first time:

  • Main menu looks rather nice
  • Going always full throttle is a bad idea
  • Spectators are accident prone
  • Co-Driver's balls are steel
  • Radiator breaks often first
  • Engineers can't fix sh*t in 30 minutes
  • 1960s cars are too slow
  • Hillclimb cars are too fast
  • RWD cars are just plain undrivable
  • Advanced tuning is too advanced
  • Wet asphalt = Ice
  • Understeer is always bad
  • Driving over crests at high speeds is fun
  • Driving over crests at high speeds is dangerous
  • Restarting feels tempting
  • Rallycross is a "ram-fest"
  • Tutorials hardly teach anything
  • Weight transfer sounds complicated
  • Scandinavian flick is impossible to execute
  • Sweden is a frozen hell

No but seriously, the game is really fun and challenging once you get the grasp of it.
Definitely recommended if you enjoy racing games!

Finland. Group B. Midday.

Co-Driver: "Left six, 200. Middle over crest, jump maybe."

Maryland, USA. NASA satellite tracking station.

Radar Operator: "Sir, we're detecting an unidentified craft launching into a sub-orbital trajectory out of Europe."

Commander: "What's the radar signature look like?"

Radar Operator: "Sir... it's an Audi."

Commander: "God help us all."

Easily the best rally game I have ever played. DiRT Rally brings back the best aspects of old Colin McRae Rally games and combines it with great visuals even better than in older DiRT titles.

Beware though, the game is hard. I'm trying to play it on a gamepad without any assists enabled and it's truly challenging - taming a RWD Group B car on ice is nearly impossible!

My biggest issue with the game? Multiplayer is Rallycross exclusive - so you can't compete with other drivers on rally nor hillclimb stages. Shame, because DiRT3 did it perfectly :(

If you were a fan of the old rally titles, then take a look at this one. While I have admittedly neglected this one - its still a blast! Its challenging to blast through the forest in the rain on slick, muddy tracks. Its not an arcade smash the gas like the previous dirt titles (tho those were fun too), but is more of a rally sim. Its also beautiflly detailed.

Before even trying to think to press the “buy button” you need to ask yourself some questions:
1- do you love Rally racing?
2- do you like a challenge?
3- (and the most important one) do you have a Racing Wheel?
I got Dirt Rally a way back, tried to play it on my Xbox One Controller and I always fail miserably! I never bothered even to try with a keyboard, and I thought I wasted my money on a game I could not play, simply because it’s too damn hard!!
Everything changed when I got myself a racing wheel (Logitech Driving Force GT) a bit old wheel but still one of the best!
so I fired Dirt Rally up and surprise! I was driving way better, hell, I even ended up 4th in the first round of the career!
Dirt Rally feels so realistic, especially with a wheel, don’t bother to play with a controller or a keyboard, (well only if you are pretty good)
the graphics are amazing, the sounds from the car engine, to the dirt, to the snow, to the rain, but don’t get distracted by the sound of the dirt under your wheels, you have to pay attention to your co-pilot, because he is your road map!
oh and VR is amazing with that game! I have a Deepoon E2 (which works as Oculus DK2) and VR in Dirt Rally is very immersive!
so if you like Rally racing, you love a challenge and you own a racing wheel, Dirt Rally is a must for you!

A better and improved game from the DiRT series.
New cars, improved "My Career" mode, and more realistic handling, far better graphics and last but not least realistic surroundings, narrow circuits like in real life, circuits width might change during the race.
I recommend it if you're a race-simulator enthusiast.

Okay so this is Codemasters' best ever racing game. And that's high praise from someone who has played EVERY one of their entries since 2007 (Colin McRae Dirt).

In fact, it's not even close.

Dirt Rally is the definitive rally experience, and I anticipate I will spend 100s of hours playing it. It is a true testament to what can be achieved with meaningful community engagement: the 6+ months this game spent in Early Access helped Codemasters to fine tune the game to appease die-hard fans, and it shows.

In short, it excels in almost every area: Graphics (aesthetics and optimization), Audio (omg), Physics, Car Designs, Difficulty. My only gripe is that for $60, there is a distinct lack of content - plenty of cars and rally championships, but rallycross and hillclimb seem to be an afterthought.

But a lack of varied content cannot take away from this outstanding game that the community has been demanding for years. And most importantly, no more Travis Pastrana telling you how 'rad' and 'far-out' your last race was.

I've been playing most of the mainstream racing titles for over a decade since Gran Turismo 4 came out in 2005. I've played Gran Turismo, Forza, Asphalt, F1 simulator, NASCAR games, you name it on basically all platforms from Playstation and Xbox to mobile and PC. Every single one of them have included aggresive advertisment make it a point to tell you that their racing game has the "most authentic expirience" and "best racing simulation", and when the first scentence of this game's description included the words "authentic" and "thrilling" I wasn't expecting much different from any other racing game. It has been different than any other racing game in the best way. They did an excellent job on how the cars handle and react, and driving in DiRT Rally is one of the best racing expeiriences you can get with pixels. Gameplay wise, I can't find anything to complain about. The only thing I would warn people about is it requires a pretty beefy PC to play on the highest graphics settings, and it might be somewhat of a learning curve for some people. However, I played this game on my other PC which doesn't even have a dedicated GPU and it still looks good with tuned down settings.

TL;DR Easily the best racing experince in a video game to date.

Assetto Corsa was my gold standard for VR racing games on the Oculus rift. Dirt Rally might now take that cake. The title runs very well on a 4790K with a GTX 1070 and has all settings on Ultra. I never had to muck around with settings, look up configurations or anything. It was just run and go.

Buy Assetto for your track / racing fix. Buy Dirt Rally for Rally. Both simulations give you sublime wheel force feedback where car handling just feels "right". If you have a wheel, are into car sims and have an Oculus - both are essential.

This game needs proper multiplayer online instead of just rallycross.

I dont feel I have my value for money with this important element missing.

You should learn from other games its all about gameplay and having fun racing
with friends or atleast the option to do so.. sorry thumbs down until this this changed..
