What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“More things are constantly being added and the experience will change over time. It's less beta testing at this point and more expanding on the game, although bugs and glitches are inevitable.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most likely for several months, but it will depend on what the community thinks.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current final release goal is to improve graphics, upgrade networking functionality, create more content and provide full Windows, OSX and Linux support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is completely playable with hours and hours of content to explore.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will remain free, but the abilities provided by Gold may change. Nothing that will make the game pay to win, however.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout all of the development so far popularly recommended ideas have been added to the game. This will continue through the Steam release with the forums. The Steam Workshop could also be integrated to allow the community to create their own content. Polls are widely used to gauge community interest in various ideas.”

About This Game

Unturned is a sandbox game in the emerging multiplayer apocalypse survival genre. Rather than focusing on being an MMO it provides players with easy systems to sit down and survive the zombie infestation with their friends. Over the course of a typical adventure, groups will have a blast fortifying locations, scavenging for supplies, trying to live off the land and negotiating with other people. The game is being developed entirely with the community in focus, and tons of features are based entirely on feedback:

Fortification:
Players can build massive forts out of structural building blocks, or build onto smaller buildings in the world with barricades. It is also possible to create traps and intricate electronic systems. More options for building are constantly being added based on what the community requests.

Survival:
It is entirely possible to live off the wilderness by harvesting trees and rocks, growing crops and hunting animals down. What sort of survival stuff is added is entirely decided by the community.

Explore:
The game goes where the community wants it to. The initial release map is set on the lovely Prince Edward Island, but over the next few months many more locations will arrive for players to explore depending on what the community wants to see. Currently the island has plenty of interesting locations to discover and loot.

Bandits:
Players can choose to enter player versus player servers and battle other players to steal their gear. Banditry is highly supported with plenty of weapons and sneaky devices.

Heroes:
Players can join player versus environment servers to team up with other people, and easily create clans to play with their pals.

Early Access:
This is the first public release of the game, but new features and content are constantly getting added as a result of community feedback. You can see how far the game has come with the help of the community since the original testing prototype:

  • Spend 10 hours trying to find your friend on the map.
  • He dies from thirst as we see eachother.
  • Finally find him again then build a base.
  • Discover 3.0 version after its release months ago.
  • Switch to 3.0 then get stacked while your friend still dies from thirst...
  • Build another base, but bigger and better.
  • Discover custom maps.
  • Switch to that.
  • Build yet another base.
  • Install 7 mods without testing them.
  • Whole map gets flooded with water, base is gone, items gone, no backup.
  • Realize you've wasted 60 hours of your life...

Recap: 99/100 Game, would crash vehicles into ocean again...

Easily one of the best free to play games on Steam. This is a genre that has been over-done, but Unturned manages to be unique in it's own way. Kill zombies, gather resources, hunt animals, craft things and scavenge for items. That's all you do.

You only have 3 types of enemies in Unturned, there's the normal, the military and the Mega zombies, the latter being quite rare and way more powerful which will make you want to run if you encounter one, especially if you're playing on Hard, but Unturned is more about the quantity of enemies... if you get swarmed, you're gonna have a bad time!

The beauty in Unturned stands in how simple it is, yet manages to be fun and quite graphically stunning. The developer team is just one single developer, and he's about 17 years old, that is something that should always be remembered, because not only does he update the game on a regular basis (about twice a week now), he has improved this game from an almost unplayable mess for older computers which was v2.0, to a polished and really smooth game v3.0 is.

I still haven't bought the Gold Upgrade, but I'm planning on doing it, just because I want to "donate" to Nelson Saxton, this is how Free to Play should be. There's no "BUY HP FOR 5$", the game is COMPLETELY free, and all you get from the golden upgrade is cosmetic stuff, like new facial expressions, skin coloring and access to the Gold servers, which are restricted to "Premium" members (great for when you want to avoid F2P newbies). Again, there is more content but it's not shoved in your face 24/7, and it doesn't really make you a superior, more well-equipped player for owning it.

There's a set of skills where you use the experience you gather from killing zombies, hunting animals and harvesting resources, these skills are all very helpful to your survival, and will take their time to be fully upgraded. For now there's the Offense, Defense, and Support skills, maybe we'll see more in the future :)

There are numerous items in this game and for the looks of it, new items are still being added in each update. Weapons go from Hockey Sticks and Golf clubs, to Sniper Rifles, Machine Guns and more. You can find some vehicles too with a Fuel system, which means you can't go everywhere with your car without scavenging for fuel first. There's also tons of food around, but good luck on finding it in good condition, because Unturned also uses an item quality system. You can eat a carrot, but if it's moldy, your illness percentage will increase and you'll end up scavenging for pills in order to cure it.

Do you remember how satisfying it felt in Resident Evil 4, when you had your inventory all organized and in place? Unturned now has the same type of inventory in v3.0, which is way more realistic than the inventory in v2.0. An item takes X number of squares depending on it's size. Oh, and you can choose 2 of these items for quick switching with the 1 and 2 keys, you'll probably put your weapon/tool here, since a zombie always appears out of the blue!

There's not much more to say about Unturned, it's a great game where you and your friends can spend lots of hours just creating a house and equipping it, or just scavenging and exploring Prince Edward Island to find all the secrets that lies within it. Unturned is a must play to anyone who has a Steam account, even if it is for just 1 hour, it will be enough to see the effort of a young developer which I undoubtedly respect. I'm not saying it's the best game ever, I even admit it can be a bit boring after some time (for me), but for the price of 0$, it's an awesome game, and I'm pretty sure I'll play it in the future to check out the updates.

Score: 8/10

It's kinda small, but it's becoming a well work-in-progress. The testing version unlocked by the code OPERATIONMAPLELEAF is actually kinda fun. I love the physics engine in that version, especially when dead zombies suddenly fly to the moon. I just like the game for how it's designed, and sometimes it gets my explorative nature going. Especially that one barricaded house. I made a little idea of using a vehicle to get into a window of that one. But I just think the game is a little piece of fun to get into from time to time, even though it's nothing really too big yet, it seems to be getting to there.

Unturned, yes. What about it? Well, let me tell you, it's one of the best games you will find on Steam. Look around, what do you see, well, I see a game that has an incredible future. Beta 3.0 really brings the game to life with the physics and shading.
[] Starting off with nothing can be quite daunting is some games, but as soon as you find a village you can find a few weapons and clothes.
[] Once you have the basics, why not find a gas can and a car to get you round the map in a minute or two.
[] Next head to confederation bridge to get yourself a weapon and some ammo.
[] Feeling a bit daring, head to the military base and take on the dreaded hulk zombie (you might want a grenade or a lot of ammo) this guy can take some hits. Don't use a melee weapon if you can help it when fighting the hulk zombie, but conserve as much ammo as you can, but don't worry, it's not impossible to find ammo so you can use the odd bit.
[] Find yourself some military clothes (Ninja and ghillie suits look cool, but for bigger carrying spaces use the military clothes and vest).
[]Maybe you're thinking: "What now? I have got some OP stuff, but nowhere to store it or somewhere to stay". Well, don't worry, because that area has already been covered by the awesome dev team. You can chop down trees to create a base. You will need to find nails and metal scrap for many things, but just blow some cars up for the metal scrap. You can build your base either massive or small, whatever suits you. You can craft crates to store some spare stuff!
[] Why not make vault and jail doors for your base and barricade the walls with sandbags and barbed wire for extra protection, or make a garage for your cars!

Overall, you really should get this game. In my opinion it is the best zombie apocalypse survival, creative game on Steam. You know, you should really get it, join a server, team up or go lone and kill others in PVE or PVP. Get this game and enjoy! You will thank me later :D

2.0 Unturned:
Many people are turned off by the simple graphics and the 'free to play' label.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game both as a player, and as an admin on two busy servers (though I don't recommend the admin route if you want to enjoy the game without the stress of dealing with many issues).
EDIT: Note that the servers I moderated are now unavailable.
Like many have said before me, it's almost like a DayZ and Minecraft combination. You can build a base and defend yourself from the infected, as well as the other humans. Zombies are not a threat in the slightest. They are easy to kill, easy to outrun, and it's the players you need to worry about. The community largely consists of younger gamers who like to KOS and/or scream "HACKER" at anyone who kills them. I have, however, met a lot of really lovely people.
One thing to note is the abundance of hackers. Since it's super easy to cheat in Unturned, I recommend that you find servers that are whitelisted or heavily monitored by admins.

tl;dr
It's fun, but beware of hackers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.0 Unturned:
I have not devoted nearly as much time to this as I have the older version.
From what I've seen, the map is much larger and the zombies are a bit more challenging.
The inventory system has changed to look more like the DayZ system.
I can't say much, as I have not played it a lot.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

All in all, I prefer 2.0 over 3.0, but it is an enjoyable game nonetheless (and perhaps I will really like the final release).
Most of my friends share the same opinion, and have sadly abandoned the game.

There's nothing to lose but a bit of time, so grab a few friends and give it a try.

Great game. Especially saying that it is only in early access! People who are saying 'this is just a rip-off version of Minecraft,' it isn't.

I think to improve the game, you could think about the textures because it lacks a bit of detail and make it harder for people to hack on this game because almost every server I have been on so far has had hackers on them.

This game is shockingly fun. I downloaded it at the suggestion of some friends and it was definitely worth it. I have a bit more exploring to do, but I'm considering going ahead and buying the premium. Single player is great to learn how to survive, and online is fun for playing with your friends. I definitely recommend this game.

I like the first update version best, coz of hunting animals, and items grouped in your inventory, not items separately as in the latest update. The most irritating thing is multiplayer for it is laggy as hell, and z-s kill you 5 meters away from you, so no proper pvp yet =/
