What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“More things are constantly being added and the experience will change over time. It's less beta testing at this point and more expanding on the game, although bugs and glitches are inevitable.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most likely for several months, but it will depend on what the community thinks.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current final release goal is to improve graphics, upgrade networking functionality, create more content and provide full Windows, OSX and Linux support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is completely playable with hours and hours of content to explore.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will remain free, but the abilities provided by Gold may change. Nothing that will make the game pay to win, however.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout all of the development so far popularly recommended ideas have been added to the game. This will continue through the Steam release with the forums. The Steam Workshop could also be integrated to allow the community to create their own content. Polls are widely used to gauge community interest in various ideas.”

June 24 Update Notes

Yes - you can finally drive the tanks found around PEI and Washington! On PEI you can find a tank at Confederation Bridge, or at the destroyed tunnels on Washington. If you manage to loot some tank shells you can use the tank's turret, but keep an eye out, as you're very exposed in the gunner's seat! Tank missiles are similar to rockets, but travel faster and drop less. The new turret system is also very generic for modders, so features like rear-facing guns on a biplane or missiles on an attack helicopter are possible.

Update Notes:

  • Added Tanks. [IDs 120-121]
  • Added Missile. [ID 1302]
  • Added Book/Note. [IDs 1327-1328]
  • Added Hatch. [IDs 1329-1332]
  • Added option for inbound voice volume gain.
  • Added icon when other player is talking.
  • Improved cloth buildables to be colorable with flares.
  • Improved shadow draw distance to make objects pop more, but character is wider.
  • Tweaked admins to salvage items more quickly.
  • Tweaked chemicals to be usable as poison.
  • Tweaked 16x scope to have more mildots.
  • Fixed showing player name rather than character name.
  • Fixed barricade placement angle rounding.
  • Fixed pine rampart low LOD using maple material.
  • Fixed filter item showing quality.
  • Fixed slight gap in heights of bridge #1.

June 17 Update Notes

  • Added Gasmask. [ID 1270]
  • Added Radiation Filter. [ID 1271]
  • Added wall-mounted Flares. [IDs 1272-1277]
  • Added Wardrobes. [IDs 1278-1281]
  • Added Umbrella. [ID 1282]
  • Added Cooler. [ID 1283]
  • Added Tables. [IDs 1284-1295]
  • Added Beach Chair. [ID 1296]
  • Added Weak, Bulletproof and Oneway Glass. [IDs 1297-1299]
  • Added streamer mode option.
  • Added example structure to sources.
  • Accepted 12 new Curated Workshop items.
  • Improved character movement to slide down steep surfaces.
  • Improved profanity filter option to work with signs and notes.
  • Tweaked custom objects with a non-one scale to show error, but ignore scale tool.
  • Tweaked arrow weapon ranges higher now that ballistics make them harder to use.
  • Tweaked amount of scope sway slightly lower.
  • Tweaked Matamorez player damage back up.
  • Tweaked footsteps in Arena lobby to be silent.
  • Tweaked debug info to hide when HUD is disabled.
  • Fixed several obstruction check issues with triangular structures.
  • Fixed escape while connecting to cancel further attempts.
  • Fixed rubber banding right after exiting vehicle.
  • Fixed viewmodel precision on larger maps.
  • Fixed climbing sides of barracks.
  • Fixed failed exchange to show timed out message.
  • Fixed inventory to show message when waiting for response.
  • Fixed to damage cover before players during explosions.
  • Fixed triggers blocking stance changes.
  • Fixed extra icons for items with the same name.

The trend toward more challenging deadzones continues: gasmask filters are no longer infinite and need to be kept track of as you loot a deadzone. Previously wearing a complete biohazard suit would protect you from the radioactive waste, but now the gasmask or biohazard hood are the key items acting as a higher capacity buffer to your immunity. When wearing a mask with depleted filters you can equip a new filter and screw it on to replace the old one. On future official maps the endgames will be in the deadzones, so you'll need to collect filters and quickly get in and out in raids with your team.

Streamer Mode:

If you are streaming the game and running into issues with viewers stalking you there is now an option called "Streamer Mode" intended to prevent this. When enabled it prevents joining you through Steam, hides server info from the loading screen and pause menu, player icons from the player list and replaces player names based on Steam ID. You can customize the replacement names used by modifying the file "StreamerNames.json" which can be cool for putting viewer/subscriber names in-game with you.

About This Game

Unturned is a sandbox game in the emerging multiplayer apocalypse survival genre. Rather than focusing on being an MMO it provides players with easy systems to sit down and survive the zombie infestation with their friends. Over the course of a typical adventure, groups will have a blast fortifying locations, scavenging for supplies, trying to live off the land and negotiating with other people. The game is being developed entirely with the community in focus, and tons of features are based entirely on feedback:

Players can build massive forts out of structural building blocks, or build onto smaller buildings in the world with barricades. It is also possible to create traps and intricate electronic systems. More options for building are constantly being added based on what the community requests.

It is entirely possible to live off the wilderness by harvesting resources, fishing, growing crops and hunting animals down. What sort of survival stuff is added is entirely decided by the community.

The game goes where the community wants it to. The initial release map is set on the lovely Prince Edward Island, but over the next few months many more locations will arrive for players to explore depending on what the community wants to see. Currently the island has plenty of interesting locations to discover and loot.

Players can choose to enter player versus player servers and battle other players to steal their gear. Banditry is highly supported with plenty of weapons and sneaky devices.

Players can join player versus environment servers to team up with other people, and easily create clans to play with their pals.

Roomscale VR Support:

Unturned's level editor now supports the Vive! You can build the visuals of your maps using motion controllers with modes that provide the same functionality as the desktop editor, along with some special abilities like throwing objects. For non-visuals elements of the level such as data entry, spawn management or navigation baking the desktop editor is still required.

600 hours of experience and very well known on the workshop, so I pretty much have seen it all.

Unturned is rather mixed. Most servers follow a pay to win format and are focused on PvP (get lucky to find a gun and kill everyone you meet) or die trying. These servers are trash. However if you join a server without plugins such as TPA and kits, it is completely different. It feels like a survival game more than a FPS. You get to build a base... only to get offline raided, fight off zombies while exploring towns, military bases, and other places. You get a chance to be the best rather than paying for a free gun kit and plane.

But why do I recommend this game? Simple. Besides the current state, it has been improving greatly since what it used to be a long time ago. The community has improved to an extent, the recent addition of bullet drop and scope sway makes sniping require more skill rather than a simple point, click the head and get an instant kill, and the workshops includes mods to suit almost anyone.

The workshop- it's brilliant. Nelson has done a good job with the additions he has made to Unturned, but the workshop has a lot of good content, including a lot of gun and hat skins (which has caused the economy to be similar to CS:GO or TF2) there are maps that can go up to 64 square kms and dwesigned for a lot of gamemodes. There's maps designed for survival similar to Washington/PEI and works well due to it's design, Maps that allow you to race, Maps such as mine (Isle of Wolves) which is based on progression, and of course arenas and maps to try and replicate famous maps such as Chernarus and Dust II. And some modders have added many workshop guns and vehicles too. Want to fire away at a horde of zombies with a minigun while your friend is flying you around on a Hummingbird? Now you can.

The graphics is rather a blocky and simple design. I don't dislike the design, but some people would be put off by it. Nelson has said he will improve it to have graphics that are similar to Firewatch. which I suppose is better, we'll have to find out ourselves. However this simple design makes it seem more like a cartoon than realism, which people could see it relate to games like Minecraft, just with guns.

If you are one who doesn't want to play the game due to factors such as the community, go ahead. But you're missing out.

I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes a survial kind of game.

Pros :
  • Weekly updates - This game is updated every Friday, usually with improvements, fixes and a few new items or cosmetics.
  • Mod Support - The developer, Nelson, has many guides for creating mods for this game
  • Absolutely Free - None of the purchaseable addons will make you better at Unturned, all the addons and premium upgrades are purely cosmetics.
  • Weekly Updates - Many servers take a lot of time to update to the latest version of the game. For example, in my timezone, I cannot play Unturned on Saturdays because servers are running a different version of this game. You can still play if you find a server that updates earlier than the others.
  • Community - 10 year olds and mic spamming are a few of the problems in the Unturned community although, I have met a few nice people on Unturned, who are now friends on Steam.

I wouldn't rate this game a 10/10, but I can say that it is definitely a 9/10

My Unturned Story

- Starts game
- Joins random server with 24 slots
- I see a guy
- The guy sees me
- The guy asks if I want to team with him
- I say yes
- Our adventures start and we kill every zombie that dares stand in our way
- We see a group of players
- They start shooting at us
- We start running
- We look behind us and a humvee is driving straight at us
- It's covered in barbed wire and C4
- The person detonates the C4 on the humvee
- My friend dies
- I pick up my friend's gun from his corpse and proceed to shoot at everything that moves
- I find some C4 from the dead terrorist and proceed to strap it onto a red car
- I drive into their base while screaming "ALLAHU AKBAR!"
- I detonate the C4
- Everyone died
9/11 would suicide bomb again

Don't listen to the negative reviews, "OH, ITS THE DEVEELOPERS FAULT! BAD COMMUNITY! OH ITS SO BAD!". It isn't the developers fault, it's not all rainbows and sprinkles. Unturned is a amazing game that at first look you might say "minecraft parody, is bad game", but once you play it. You might never leave it. The game is about surviving in a zombie world, not fending of zombies(in multiplayer, zombies are the least of your worries). The game is really good, being made by one guy. Best of all? It's updated every friday.

Listen I might have many hours in this game but that does not mean I can recommend it. It used to be good, but let me get into why this game has fallen from it's glory.

1. The developer panders to little kids over veteran players of the games
What I mean by this is little kids will start crying because they died to a weapon and it will get nerfed. There have been constant nerfing of weapons that don't need to be nerfed especially in the case of snipers. The 2 main snipers(Grizzly and Timberwolf) went from 400m to 250m(This is the same distance the assualt rifles were previously) and then from 250 to needing rarer ammo where the boxes hold even less to then going to 300m but ridiculous sway and bullet drop(Though personally I like the drop, and the sway, but I'd still consider them nerfs regardless, especially when you can only hold your breathe for like a second despite being able to hold it in water for much longer((logic, right?)) ) and LOL NERFING SENTRY GUNS BECAUSE OF THE CREATIVE MODE. You should not balance a game around your games creative mode unless the game is primarly a creative mode game. Also, this is basically bb gun simulator due to how weak most of the weapons are.
2. The developer is more focused on adding newer content then fixing game breaking AND immersion breaking bugs, and this has been going on since 3.0. What I mean by this is that there's plenty of bugs, like crashing on start up, crashing in mid game(Has been going on for at least 2 months and inb4 someone says "Well I haven't been getting it" my friends have too especially when playing for a few hours) lockers and crates that you cannot enter because they are busy despite no one even using them and the most notorius one, falling through roofs and floors when you spawn on your bed((Literally has been going on since at least december)
3. Pretty much just KOS everywhere. Why is this? It's because of how young the player base is. You can try to be friendly but it just ends up with a 12 year old trying to hit you with their weapon. There's hand cuffs, but since people have to surrender for them to be put on you have to be able to find someone willing to surrender in the first place, and good luck finding anyone with a weapon and getting them to surrender. Not to mention that the player base is so young that even if you DO manage to team with someone they are incompetent and don't understand the game well enough and you likely won't find anyone with gear to team with because of the age and constant KOS even if you have gear good luck finding a team mate
4. The community.
The community is a double-edged sword. On one hand , there are lots and lots of great modders. On the other hand the rest of the community is toxic and vile and white-knight obvious problems with the game. I could elaborate more, but I think that I coverd the main issues in the kos section. Just beware the forums as well, as I would even describe them as "kos" in some way

There are plenty of good things too but if you have the money and specs, just buy a survival game.

EDIT: Sorry for all the spelling errors, I am fixing it up. I was in a rush. Also going to add more things

-Be me
-Unturned newbie, just spawning into server
-Finds myself at a fire station. Picks up gun from dead body.
-Sees someone in the distance. I wave to them.
-They scream in chat "F*CK YOU NOOB"
-They take aim and shoot
-mfw they're a terrible shot with a scope
-I point my gun at them and fire. Headshot.
-Loots the corpse. Continues to hunt them across the map.
-5 kills later, kid says he "has to go to dinner" and with one final "F*CK YOOOOUUUU", he leaves.

9/11 would make kids ragequit again

all in all tho, decent game, has a nice atmosphere and style and the combat is well developed. In the words of a great man, "Hey... that's mildly adequate."
