What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“More things are constantly being added and the experience will change over time. It's less beta testing at this point and more expanding on the game, although bugs and glitches are inevitable.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most likely for several months, but it will depend on what the community thinks.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current final release goal is to improve graphics, upgrade networking functionality, create more content and provide full Windows, OSX and Linux support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is completely playable with hours and hours of content to explore.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will remain free, but the abilities provided by Gold may change. Nothing that will make the game pay to win, however.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout all of the development so far popularly recommended ideas have been added to the game. This will continue through the Steam release with the forums. The Steam Workshop could also be integrated to allow the community to create their own content. Polls are widely used to gauge community interest in various ideas.”

October 9 Patch Information

This week I worked on separating out various Steamworks related features from one another (which should have been done from the start of development, if you have a time machine go tell Nelson to fix that). This will make working on the networking easier because it uses Steam's multiplayer API, and previously I had it entangled with other Steam features like workshop and achievements. Hopefully this cleanup will be finished with each service abstracted nicely for next week's patch. Rocket mods should be functional with these changes, as Sven was kind enough to patch it with an early version of the update.

There were also some minor fixes alongside improvements such as:

  • Improved skills menu. [In the future will also show current/next +stat% info]
  • Improved crafting menu readability.
  • Improved escape menu to pause game.
  • Improved settings to save after changes rather than when closing application.
  • Improved speciality to impact which skills are lost on death, no longer abusable.

Sorry about the super early update! Something got mixed up and some parts of the update were distributed incorrectly, so may as well release everything else as well. :)

One of the time consuming parts of this update is the tools upgrade for the economy. This is not really visible, but will make it a lot easier to quickly fix bugs or adapt to updates to the inventory service like tags.

Today I got a new AppID on Steam named "Unturned Experimental" which is very useful to test upcoming Steamworks-related updates without messing with the release version, for example adding the new Workshop tags! In the future it may be used for closed testing of networking improvements (it has its own listing on the server browser) which leads into the next topic:

Which of these would you like me to work on in October? Originally my intent was to create a huge Halloween event with Horde mode, but I think it may be more important and better for the future to really focus hard on optimizing the networking. I've been reading up on as many networking articles as I can find, and while 3.0's networking is better than 2.0's there's still plenty of room for improvement. Either way at the very least I will add some cool Halloween easter eggs/items!

About This Game

Unturned is a sandbox game in the emerging multiplayer apocalypse survival genre. Rather than focusing on being an MMO it provides players with easy systems to sit down and survive the zombie infestation with their friends. Over the course of a typical adventure, groups will have a blast fortifying locations, scavenging for supplies, trying to live off the land and negotiating with other people. The game is being developed entirely with the community in focus, and tons of features are based entirely on feedback:

Players can build massive forts out of structural building blocks, or build onto smaller buildings in the world with barricades. It is also possible to create traps and intricate electronic systems. More options for building are constantly being added based on what the community requests.

It is entirely possible to live off the wilderness by harvesting resources, fishing, growing crops and hunting animals down. What sort of survival stuff is added is entirely decided by the community.

The game goes where the community wants it to. The initial release map is set on the lovely Prince Edward Island, but over the next few months many more locations will arrive for players to explore depending on what the community wants to see. Currently the island has plenty of interesting locations to discover and loot.

Players can choose to enter player versus player servers and battle other players to steal their gear. Banditry is highly supported with plenty of weapons and sneaky devices.

Players can join player versus environment servers to team up with other people, and easily create clans to play with their pals.

Early Access Review
Okay as I've lately gained interest in this again since 2014 and I've played it a lot more, this is my review for "Unturned" (scroll to bottom for TL;DR)

Things have improved A LOT since it's first release that I will list.

- Map, the map is no longer "Canada" it is now still placed in Canada but now Prince Edward Islands which I have to say is a lot better than the Canada map. (imo)

- Gameplay, the biggest change in gameplay is the balance and additions to the skill system which are good. Still lacking as I think there's great potential for perks for skills.

- Gunplay, the gunplay in this game is a lot better since the recoil feels really good and the amount of modifications for the guns is a really good size.

- Multiplayer, wow has the multiplayer in this game gotten good, no longer do you have to search up tutorials on how to join servers and try to find servers that still even run. You just open up a server list and you can search for the most players, best ping, easy or normal games, or just join any server you see, your choice.

- Graphics, nelson changed the game to a newer version so that came along with better lighting, reflections and better particles.

- Vehicles, holy ♥♥♥♥ they are way better, funny how an 18 year old dev can create better driving than overkill software (creators of payday 2).

- Performance, it performs statistically a lot better since he updated the game to a newer version of the engine he uses. I doubt you'll run this game bad though.

|x| Thanks for reading my review, If you have anything to ask me or want me to add, shoot a comment on this review. |x|

TL;DR : Game has improved a lot over the course of a year and he's planning more like a new map set in america and a bunch of weapons.

My first time playing unturned:
-Spawn in as naked guy
-Try to punch a tree down
-Realize that minecraft lied to you, and punching down trees is hard :(
-Get run over by a guy in an ATV playing uptown funk over his mic
-Find ATV guy and punch him to death
-Steal all of his guns
-Threaten random guy in world chat to 1v1
-Realize that you suck at using guns
-Get killed
-Band together with a group of other naked men to kill the random guy in chat
-Beat him to death as a horde of naked men
-Get all of his stuff
-Drink some glue
-Talk trash to him over chat
-Turns out he was the owner of the server
-Get Perma-banned
11/10 best naked boxing simulator 2015 would kill server owner again
