The best way to embrace the true greatness of this game is to look how the series have improved since the first and second part of The Witcher. You simply won't find anything that didn't change for the better.

- Vast open world that IS NOT randomly created and filled with dull stuff,
- Story that engages your from the first 10 minutes to the very end,
- Graphics that despite the whole controversy of a thing called downgrade still makes from this game THE BEST LOOKING RPG ever created,
- Soundtrack that finally goes back to the style presented originally in The Witcher 1, something that makes you forget that's just the video game, it gives you the felling you are in there, in some village or a city or that you are fighting with someone / something which makes from every single battle an unforgettable thing,
- Every single side quest and believe me there is A LOT of them is simply a little story that keeps you playing with the same force as the main quests - I call it a new quality in RPGs,
- Choices and their impact on the story - even a small choice that seems insignificant at the time can wage on the whole world around you,
- THIS GAME IS MATURE, finally something that deals with a lot of subjects that are usually handled very childish or not at all,
- Combat - nothing more to add it's good, though it's nothing to be praised really, you won't be able to mash buttons and win - you have to dodge, use signs, and on higher difficulties get yourself ready to have an oil for a specific enemy and a bomb to put an end to his misery.

The Witcher 3 is not a game without it's flaws though nothing that can't be fixed - some balance issues, economy that basicily shows Geralt as a very wealth person which he should not be, small performance problems like stuttering in Novigrad and in my opinion very limited after the end content. Many of the things that I struggled with have been already fixed and there is no need to disclose them.

All in all one of the best games in the last few years (even a decade).

It's strange how the main game, Gwent, is hidden in some kind of wierd story-driven RPG.

Sexy unicorn time

I was never particularly a fan of Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, monster slayer extraordinaire by day and droll-as-dried-fruit-passed-through-the-bowels-of-a-drowner cad by night. By all rights I should have been madly in love with CDPR’s first interpretation of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s leading man but unfortunately the original game and its subsequent sequel left me stone cold. There is just something about the first two adventures that I can’t quite get my head around (granted I have not yet tried to play the second game again now that it has full controller support) but after having completed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt I feel I might have been a bit unfair on the series since I can’t remember the last time I have had this much fun in one single game.
While The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s opening moments start out incredibly slow which sees Geralt of Rivia accept a commission by the Nilfgaardian Emperor to find his daughter Cirila and bring her back home safely soon evolves into a dangerous cat and mouse game with a legion know as the Wild Hunt who have more than a passing interest in locating and finding the young girl for themselves. The first few hours where you get to explore The Witcher 3's opening location, White Orchard, can be trying since not much happens in those first few hours but the game does open up once the player reaches Velen/Novagrad. The transition between the map of White Orchard and Velen/Novagrad is a daunting one and can often be overwhelming when you look at the square meterage that needs to be uncovered, meterage that is filled with hundreds upon hundreds of little "?" marks denoting areas of interest. It's during this section that the game hits its stride as each main quest line you tackle opens up its own set of branching quest lines, each of them ending with a cliff-hanger or two until they reach their explosive finals. CDPR manages to deftly weave a tale of intrigue and danger into each of its main quests that never seems to lose sight of the main plot line even as an entire genealogy of characters are thrown your way and you begin to struggle remembering who is who in the zoo as the intricate plot line advances.
The same can be said for many of the side-quests and monster contracts Geralt picks up through out his travels. Each one of them is their own self contained adventure yet somehow CDPR have done the impossible and given them enough weight and meaning so that they are not just frivolous fluff to busy your time with in order to level your character. Often these side quests will interject with the main quest lines sometimes even directly influencing certain main quest lines denouncements. I also particularly loved how CDPR took the common old treasure quest trope so often seen in these kinds of open world games and spun them on their head. Thankfully you won't go treasure hunting for 100 flags spread across the map in various locations but instead these treasure quests will have you seeking out new and more powerful gear which are presented to you in the form of patterns which can then be taken to certain blacksmiths and tailor's in the game to be made for you, provided you have the correct crafting ingredients to make them. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, despite the controversy surrounding the games supposed visual downgrade, is still an incredible and breathtakingly beautiful world to explore. It's so pretty in most places that the drive to uncover more areas never becomes a chore and one can easily get lost in exploring the land and forgetting why you came in the first place.

But not everything is perfect. The game does suffer from some terrible balancing issues with the first few hours being particularly difficult (the games first boss battle with a griffon is a long and arduous fight - one taking upwards of 10 minutes to best) where as the further you progress it starts to become a bit of a cakewalk. Pathfinding is a complete joke and often the game will have you running around in circles. This becomes more of a problem in Skellige where the map is covered with high rise mountains that make it near impossible to climb yet the pathfinder will insist that you continue upwards when it becomes apparent it's not possible. The game is also never entirely clear how your potions and elixirs are replenished and manoeuvring Roach, Geralts steed, often feels like you are trying to drive a tank through a doughnut hole. Some quest lines broke irreparably during my playthrough and there are a host of visual glitches that put the game on par with AC: Unity after launch.
Granted CDPR have been particularly good at patching the game so it will just be a matter of time before most of the glitches are ironed out but this may hamper your enjoyment so be advised. Combat also comes across as far too simplistic the further you venture into the game world. It's never more than just engaging enough, “simply” just getting the job done and often can devolve into a button mashing exercise with the odd occasional parry and magical aura spam here and there. That being said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt does hit more highs than it does lows and many, if not most, can be overlooked but they should be mentioned because they may invariably define how you will ultimately feel about the game.

CDPR have excelled with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt delivering one of the most engrossing games I have had the pleasure of playing. While it may be rough around the edges in certain regards, the ambition on display here is admirable and I can't wait to see what comes next. I expect BIG, BIG things. Well done CDPR - you took a gamer who couldn't have cared either way about your franchise and made him a fan. Highly recommended!
