4.0 + DLC Review

TL;DR: This is not X4 and it's not meant to be X4. It's a good space-combat-and-fun-flying-around-in-space-sim which has an ill-designed but workable economic system. Dont expect to play for thousands of hours but you can still get more playtime than most other AAA titles.

I played a fair bit of X3 TC and AP back in the day. I loved those games so much that I pre-ordered the metal collector's edition for XR. However, the game was a mess at launch and I never really played it until now. With patch 4.0 and the two expansions, the game seems pretty solid.

It's not a successor to X3, it's a different game. If you wanted X4, you won't like this. But if you are new to the X series or can approach X:R as a different franchise, free of the trappings of it's predecessors, then you might just like it.

The good:
- The graphics quality and performance is amazing. Though it's not as pretty as Star Citizen (check the Gamescon 2016 demo), or E:D in the Vive, it's still gorgeous and atmospheric. And I am surprised at how smooth the game is even with ultra settings at 1440p and zipping across with amazing speed along the highways. This on my 2 year old 780 Ti. The stations are huge and detailed (from the outside). You can walk around inside the stations if you want to, but that part is ugly.
- Combat is decent- I honestly enjoy it as much as in X3.
- The world seems alive. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of ships chugging along the routes and they actually look like space cars and sapce lorries on a busy space highway. Billboards light up the routes, stations look believable, you can even pimp up the cockpit somewhat.
- No crashes so far, no serious bugs noticed.

The bad:
- You can pilot just one ship- which sucks (though you can hire NPCs to run other ships for you). Also, weapons and equipment types are very very limited. This is my biggest problem with the game so far. It just seems very light on this front.
- The Economy - it's kinda broken. To be fair, I have never played any game where the economic aspect seemed to be perfectly simulated. However, it's salvagable to an extent - at least in some zones.

Also, do check out the Steam workshop for mods. Many of them provide great quality of life improvements. There are even some big ones that fix the shortcomings that I have mentioned here, but then can only go so far.

The game's alright. They fixed most of the issues it had, from what I've heard. It has pretty graphics, but the character models are extremely ugly and are an eyesore. Still, this game has more content than Elite Dangerous and feels overall more complete. The devs didn't just drop the whole thing when everybody started bombarding them with negative reviews and angry comments, they deserve a little more love and some respect for their determination to finish what they've started, great effort.

Look this game was a trash bag on launch. But they have put years of support and patches into and and it's finally at the state it should have been on launch day.

So, dont ever pre-order from them again but I think it's worth a shot now.

No much to say... I really tried and I keep trying... but I just want to have an X game not this.... It is not complicated... it is stupid game, actually it is stupidly complicated.... I hope some day the just stop insisting on this and create an x4 game what is everyone really wants....

XRebirth 4.0: The patches have fixed all the game breaking bugs, the expansions have added a lot of content, and there are many mods to help improve the game as well and I'd highly suggest looking at some of the most subscribed ones.

Overall Egosoft stuck with it and it's paid off. For all the people that cry you can only play in one ship, I think 80% of them would still stick with that ship if given the choice simply because it has the best stats & they'd be calling people fools for using anything else while patting themselves on the back for their minmaxing prowess. Just like they did with the other X-games.

The pros are this game lets you do just about anything you want, amass a fleet of trading, mining, and combat ships. Build up an empire of space stations to corner the market on goods.

The biggest negative for me is the user interface, imagine trying to run an empire from your car with just an old style flip phone. If they would give us more of a galactic scale view ala civilization or even a starcraft level view to control ships & stations it would help out a lot once you hit a point where you have many ships/stations all over the star systems.

I would recommend buying this if you love these kinds of games like Privateer, or Freelancer. But this is definitely a worthwhile buy during the Steam sales where the price gets cut down to 50%-75% off.

If you are a X-Series fan, avoid playing this game. Besides some names and story facts, it is really different from what you know. Trade, Fight, Build, Think... These elements were changed from basics and it feels more like a new game series, rather than a real X game. Although I tried many times, I was not able to accept the new system of 1 ship, wormhole travel, stupid AI and old grandmas on every station. If you want to expect a totally different game, which has not so much in common with old X games, you can give it a try.

In Version 4 still heavy Framedrops... In the second area with all the nebula the frame drops below 30 with a system that is way better than the recommended system... On the First Station where you get the weapons are heavy framedrops too...still unplayable and not enjoyable for me...

why the f*ck did they implement a 30 fps framelock?
sometimes it´s just locked at 30 fps when i look in a direction and if i look a bit left or right the fps goes above 30...

First impression 5 hours in is pretty horrible. Knowing myself I'll keep going until I've seen everything the game has to offer even if I regret spending those hours later, so I'll update this review if it gets better. I've played all previous X games from X2 on BTW, but I'll try to have an open-minded approach to this one.

PROS
- Decent graphics in space, some pretty impressive sights
- Basic control with gamepad is good
- Fully modeled cockpit with a copilot is pretty cool, let's see if it gets old
- Shooting feels good

CONS
- Game flashes brief and vague messages about features and commands at the worst possible moments. There's no way you're gonna learn how to play the game that way. Example: It told me at some point I could match speed with other vehicles on the highway with... some button? Barely had time to read, and could never figure out which one by experimenting. Ended up pressing LT all the time to maintain speed. So expect a lot of hunting the interwebs for answers.
--> As bad as No Man's Sky is, it does a good job of introducing the game's commands, with repetitive and contextual prompts. Check it out devs.
- Gamepad control scheme is incomplete, can start autopilot but not stop it without reaching for keyboard for instance. Ever hear of long presses? Dual presses? Or even a "shift" button?
- Yawn-inducing story.
- You spend most of your time listening to the highway music, your view obscured by the highway walls. Missions so far involve a lot of boring travelling this way. (Contrast that with earlier X games where you traversed amazing looking sectors with great music.)
- Space stations are all nearly exactly the same inside, there's basically one interior model.
- Travelling involves holding down the left trigger all the time if you want to move forward. Ok in a racing game maybe, not in a space game where you spend most of your time monotonously moving forward. (You can work around that by using keyboard commands.)
- You must hunt tiny icons for docking points, material selling points, station scanning, and so forth. It's really hard to associate those icons with what they're supposed to be floating above (especially the "info" icons) and they get obscured by other objects.
- Everything looks aliased as hell from a distance even with 8x anti-aliasing, with a distinct "crawling" effect on distant objects as you move around.
- What the hell is this map. It's completely unintuitive compared to X3, is useless for exploring, useless to get an overview of services offered in an area, and clicking anything zooms and pans you in unhelpful ways. Highways are not named or numbered and show where they're going unless you've let the game plot a course for you.
- Lack of soul. No news of what's going on around the universe, no description for each sector like in previous X games (occasional video when entering some areas). All you get is descriptions for wares and (apparently) an underlying economic simulation.

Lastly something in a recent interview with the lead designer that really stuck with me: he says he avoids playing games with similar elements to this one to avoid being influenced by them. Well play them you idiot! This way you might learn about best practices instead of (badly) reinventing the wheel.
Oh yeah, he also keeps complaining about how it's hard to keep their core X3 audience happy, as if that's the reason for X Rebirth's failure. I've never been a fan of X2/X3's late gameplay of watching your bank account increase by itself, and I'm still not impressed with this game. Sorry guys, maybe you just made a bad game irrelevant of audience.

I've tried through out the years, its not like it hasn't gotten better:

Great visuals,
Added several desired features to the x universe as to complexity of combat and captial ships,
"coherent" story

but not matter what, it has one of the most horrid and frustrating control interfaces in a space game (especially an x game) that I've ever seen. (<--- is that ♥♥♥♥ed up or is my monitor tweaking out?)
Also, 'story', good luck. I can't even tell whats bugged and what's not.

I tried again, and it still is just frustrating mess. Albeit a pretty and ambitious one.

Overall this game in its current state is worth every cent. There are problems stemming from insufficient quality control and play testing but you can still get many hours of joy out of this game despite the problems.
However, if you are a X2 or X3 fan, then be warned that this is not X4 rather its a continuation of the game style in the original X game, 'Beyond the Frontier'. Notably you can only fly a single ship although it is a very capable ship.

Pro:
  • Good space combat: Not Excellent like 'Freespace' but you get to target surface components of capital ships while dodging turret fire and thinking tactically about avoiding the turrets field of fire, flying faster than its tracking speed and avoiding head on conflicts with some deadly turrets that are near impossible to dodge.
  • Economy: Empire building is generally enjoyable in this game, just be smart about location. Space station building is much more complex in this X game compared to previous X game, now you have to worry about hiring the right people to work on your station and building extensions.
  • Story: I found the story to be enjoyable, you get to explore (within the campaign) and help the underdogs survive and grow.
  • Space Terrain: Space is no longer a big empty void, plenty of asteroids, derelicts, space clouds and highways to give you a tactical advantage (if you know how)
  • Good music

Con:
  • Steep learning curve, lack of cue's, sadistic mission design occasionally: Sometimes you find that the game drops you in the deep-end or leaves you hanging from a cliff and you have to start googling to figure out how to proceed. For example, the campaign requires you to build a space station but it turns out that you cannot buy some of the prerequisite items. After some googling you find out that you have to become a pirate and steal said item but then you find out that you have to do a borderline sadistic amount of grinding to get enough of said item to proceed.
    Another example is that the campaign gives you a powerful war ship but doesnt tell you how to repair or move it, even after some googling you may still have trouble moving it.
    Another example is how larger ships move, the game gives you a capital ship but doesnt teach you about the jump fuel and capital ship booster dynamics, leaving you with some unnecessary confusion.
    Another example is the way station building works, you have to buy a construction ship which builds the station. You might think that the construction ship can then build another station once its done, but no, the construction ship becomes a permanent part of the station that can only upgrade said station, the game doesnt explain this mechanic.
  • Cumbersome interface: They made some improvements with the updates but it is still unpleasant to use.
  • Questionable script quality: Sometimes you find that things dont work as expected, often there is a good but obscure reason for it (are your ships lacking some drones? drone bay destroyed? drifted too far from station? etc) other times you find that it appears to be a bug, cancel the previous order and remake same order then it works.
  • Some incomplete aspects: For example first person mode is quite limited and should be further expanded. Exploration also very limited, although the game does not claim to have a strong exploration element, it would still be an enjoyable addition, currently it is limited to finding some containers in space which are rarely useful and never interesting. Fighters cannot dock on capital ships, not even on carriers, only combat drones can dock. This makes me think that carriers are incomplete.
  • Your stations can get damaged by trading: The exhaust fumes from a capital ship can damage ships and stations. In practice capital ships trading with stations accidently hurt your stations in this way. Then repairing your own stations is troublesome because you need to physically move the repair wares onto your station attached construction ships, they cannot put buy orders for these items on the market.
  • Enemy stations cannot be completely destroyed, they will eventually rebuild.
  • Most characters lack hair geometry. Also there are a lot of grannies in the game but that may not bother everyone :)

Let's get this out of the way right now. X Rebirth was a disaster at launch, that's why it has such a horrible score. The developer has fixed most of the complaints over time.

Right now. The game is great, it delivers on every aspect you want from this type of game but it dosn't execute it in a good way all the time. It definitly has a learning curve, more so if you haven't played any of the earlier games. But if you can get past all that you will definitly have a great time with it.

Below my 1st review. but after having checked SC and ED pages, i had to add these 2 lines. in opposition to what i first said during my first review, i have to say that Star citizen is not a fiction but definitely a reality, and a serious competitor to X-rebirth. same for Elite, i was first saying it was pretty pricey, but after having checked their page, i must admit that their prices have been seriously reduced. so these things taken apart, my review below is still valid


first review:

Best sci-fi/space opera around

+ amazing graphics
+ enterable stations. you can go to the bar and talk with NPC
+ ship customization
+ trade. you can buy/sell almost anything. from vegetables to illegal waste. you can do it using your personal ship or using large cargos you add to your fleet
+ economy/empire creation. not gone very deep into this yet. but it seems you can build your own stations and build very large ships too
+ mining
+ loot wrecks
+ drones. there are drones of all kind. recon drones, electronic warfare drones, defense drones
+ boarding. you need to send drones to hijack the target defense systems, then you need to destroy its jump engine, and then you send troops
+ cash missions (passenger transport, cargo shipping, infrastructures destruction..)
+ (obsolete) a reality not like Star citizen
+ (obsolete) a one time purchase not like Elite D
+ plenty of stuff to do not like No man's sky
+ you're in for lot of comtemplative 0 stress flights not like Eve

- no ship interiors. only a small cinematic when you land
- even if enterable, space stations interiors look pretty much all the same
- semi-automatic landings. would have been better to have more interaction when landing

neutral only one pilotable ship. i don't care myself, but i know this is annoying for lot of people
neutral needs a good config to be able to play maxed out (like any game that can draw hundreds of objects at once). i'm myself almost maxed out with an i5, an R9 290 4096 & 16 gig

don't pay attention to the huge numbers of bad reviews. this was because of a very poor optimization when the game first came out years ago. the first version is just an old memory now, and in its actual shape the game is a great space opera

TL;DR: This is not X4 and it's not meant to be X4. It's a good space-combat-and-fun-flying-around-in-space-sim which has an ill-designed but workable economic system. Dont expect to play for thousands of hours but you can still get more playtime than most other AAA titles.

I played a fair bit of X3 TC and AP back in the day. I loved those games so much that I pre-ordered the metal collector's edition for XR. However, the game was a mess at launch and I never really played it until now. With patch 4.0 and the two expansions, the game seems pretty solid.

It's not a successor to X3, it's a different game. If you wanted X4, you won't like this. But if you are new to the X series or can approach X:R as a different franchise, free of the trappings of it's predecessors, then you might just like it.

The good:
- The graphics quality and performance is amazing. Though it's not as pretty as Star Citizen (check the Gamescon 2016 demo), or E:D in the Vive, it's still gorgeous and atmospheric. And I am surprised at how smooth the game is even with ultra settings at 1440p and zipping across with amazing speed along the highways. This on my 2 year old 780 Ti. The stations are huge and detailed (from the outside). You can walk around inside the stations if you want to, but that part is ugly.
- Combat is decent- I honestly enjoy it as much as in X3.
- The world seems alive. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of ships chugging along the routes and they actually look like space cars and sapce lorries on a busy space highway. Billboards light up the routes, stations look believable, you can even pimp up the cockpit somewhat.
- No crashes so far, no serious bugs noticed.

The bad:
- You can pilot just one ship- which sucks (though you can hire NPCs to run other ships for you). Also, weapons and equipment types are very very limited. This is my biggest problem with the game so far. It just seems very light on this front.
- The Economy - it's kinda broken. To be fair, I have never played any game where the economic aspect seemed to be perfectly simulated. However, it's salvagable to an extent - at least in some zones.

Also, do check out the Steam workshop for mods. Many of them provide great quality of life improvements. There are even some big ones that fix the shortcomings that I have mentioned here, but then can only go so far.

Look this game was a trash bag on launch. But they have put years of support and patches into and and it's finally at the state it should have been on launch day.

So, dont ever pre-order from them again but I think it's worth a shot now.

This game is absolutely incredible! Amazing Graphics and a flight fealing and an immersion that i never had before... I just love to fly through this pulsating universe. Not everything is perfect, it is sometimes still hard to find out what the mission is about and where you have to go. But in the end its a beautiful game and a total mind-drift into the universe! Give those programmers some bucks, they really deserve it!

Really fascinating and fun space sandbox game! I love the mix of piloting a ship, combat, being able to build your empire, and explore! The universe seems alive and immersive, things happening around you all the time, and it looks gorgeous to me.

Refreshing to be able to do this in a fully offline, single player environment, with proper saved game mechanics. I don't get punshed for experimenting and don't feel like I'm looking real money when my ship blows up. Just all around rewarding and easy to get into and have fun.

There is a bit of a learning curve at first, but honestly that's kind of what makes the game interesting.

In Version 4 still heavy Framedrops... In the second area with all the nebula the frame drops below 30 with a system that is way better than the recommended system... On the First Station where you get the weapons are heavy framedrops too...still unplayable and not enjoyable for me...

p.s.
why the f*ck did they implement a 30 fps framelock?
sometimes it´s just locked at 30 fps when i look in a direction and if i look a bit left or right the fps goes above 30...
