Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative

“If you're like me, when you played Portal 2, you covered every room in as much bouncy gel as possible. Well now it's a whole lot easier, and you can color coordinate the walls with orange gel.”

“A surprising and fresh revival of Portal 2’s familiar puzzle elements.”
Jeep Barnett

“It looks great, it plays well, and it lasts 2-3 hours, giving it good value for money.”

Its was ok but Im glad I bought with discount, because I played free mods which is better than this.

Overall I suggest buying for everyone if discounted. However if you really like portal games than buy full price.

But consider this.
  • Game was short (I messed around a lot) game can be walkthoughed with 30 min avg.
  • Main difficulty was platforming, puzzles weren't hard (medium-easy)
  • Game did a great job at humour.
  • Game did a great job at portal game without portals
  • Graphics, were worse than portal 1, (texture filtering x16 + x8 MSAA still some textures look really bad)

I honestly, trully think you should buy this game. Here's why:

The game isn't actually that short, 4 chapters that take about an hour each (Like 2 hours on the last one) And a ok story. The communtiy test chambers rock, you can use the paint gun, have auto portals, and more!

The hammer editing and the game looks beutiful (Most of the time) 1 Problem is for most of us we have to use a weird resolution, and the game usually crashes on start, (Takes FOREVER to fix) But besides that, I reccommend this game, it isn't to expensive (You could wait for a sale again) And play it! It took me about 4 hours to finish on my first playthrough, and speedrunner's still have it be an hour, this game isn't a month long, but it will last.

Final answer: Buy it!

I bought this game, thinking that BECAUSE IT SAYS CO-OP, it would be... well... CO-OP!!! Wanted to play through this with friends as with Portal 2. Very misleading and feeling absolutely CHEATED. I won't recommend this game to anyone unless/until it actually GET CO-OP as stated is has already.

I bought this game with reasonably high expectations. The fact that Portal stories: Mel was free and this game/mod costs money made me think that. I was really wrong.
Placed in the Portal universe, you are a testsubject with this time, not a portal gun, but a paint gun. Sounds cool right?

The paint gun can place different types of gel on the floor to solve the puzzles.

The story:
Have not played it through entirely thanks to frustrating puzzles.

As this is a Portal 2 mod, a lot of the gameplay is familiar and good. All the components involving the paint gun are unfortunately really bad. Shooting the paint feels buggy and clonky. That is a very high contrast with the default Source engine gameplay characteristics.

The graphics are typical for a Source game, and are okay in most cases. The paint gun model looks absolutely horrible and just looking at it makes me vomit. In some puzzles there appears some text on screen, with a style that does not fit at all; it just looks plain amateuristic.

The puzzles are not that difficult but some of them require some clever thinking.

The puzzles themselves:
The puzzles are horrible. A lot of them are based upon timing, which makes it a case of save/reload repeat. That makes playing this game a nightmare. The flow completely breaks. In your head the puzzle is long solved, but the save/reload process to get to the end just sucks. One of the puzzles is a rollercoaster type track in which you need to spray paint in front of you to finish the track. It is very buggy to spray paint in front of you and you will often fail because of that, you can't keep up with the speed required for it. There even is a button to skip the section, which does not help the immersion. All the puzzles felt tedious and boring. A couple of puzzles were just directly taken from Portal 2 itself, and even those levels were transformed into boring pieces of trash.

The voice acting:
The voice acting is another issue. Your main companion talks quite a lot and is just talking for the sake of talking. His lines are boring, sometimes obnoxious and the voice acting itself feels a bit childish.

In this game, all the music is played through modelled speakers ingame. Sounds cool, execution is horrible. Whenever you're ingame next to a speaker, the music is loud enough to force the ♥♥♥♥ out of you making it very unpleasant. Turning the music off makes it a quiet uninteresting place.

This "game"/poorly made mod is a buggy, boring and annoying experience. If it was free I wouldn't be this hard on it, but the fact that I actually paid money for this crap is infuriating. I wish I never bought it. It sucks and it is a stain on the Portal 2 universe.

Changing the formula of Portal game - extremely good, I enjoyed very much.
The tests not too difficult, less difficult than stories mel.
I bought him for just one dollar, extremely good value.
The plot is not the strong side of the game.

A fun creative mod for Portal 2 which instead of using a portal gun you use a gun that shoots Paint. Isn't multiplayer unless you play community made maps which are fun to make because in this game unlike in Portal 2 you get more items.

What can I say? At least, on sale, it's worth.
If you liked portal 2, this is a great continuation.

This one is frustrating. Even if you find out HOW to solve things, there are still too much jumps, what must be done correctly with very tiny margins.

So, I'll get this out of the way- I LOVED this. So why do I not recomend this game? It's because this is a mod... a PAID for mod. I would understand $1 or even $1.50, but 5 bucks for such a short game. Luckly I got this on sale, but even then, I only got it because I liked the idea of it; being able to spray gel everywhere is a good idea, but honestly, it's not worth the money. You can get Portal Stories: Mel, a game with better voice acting, atmosphere and puzzles, for FREE.

In the end, DO NOT buy this game -*AHEM* - mod unless it goes on sale, and even then, think twice, because it doesn't even have much to offer.

This game is the very first Portal mod I'm disappointed about. The reasons why?
First, the game is short and has, in my opinion, no replay value. The story (if there is any?) does not compell me, plus the voice acting is mediocre in my opinion.
Furthermore, the tests are very easy at first, but at the end some of them require some strange, far-fetched exploits of game mechanics.

I also found out that "saving your game" at a certain point, does not save your game at that moment. It does save your game in the chamber you are in, but not in the state you left it. If you painted the whole chamber in blue/red paint, then saved, exited and resumed, you can start painting all over again...

Final remark: portal-walls in a game where you can't shoot any portals yourself. That's OK if the game sets portals at those spots (or you can do that by pressing a button), but in most cases, that's not the case. This game pretends to be a Portal game by almost seducing you to shoot portals, but you just can't. Frustrated me.

+ Excellent Story Proccessing
+ 2 different endings
- Doesn't matches with Portal 2's story
- Aperture Science actually doesn't have A.L.S.S.E.R

+ Nigel is your only friend
+ Nigel sometimes gives you really good advices
+ Nigel reflects its emotions perfectly
+ Nigel talks at unexpected moments (such as when you do something that you actually shouldn't do)
+ Good sense of humor
- Nigel doesn't have a backstory

+ Old Aperture levels are amazing
+ At Test Chamber 3 (I think) you can see one of the darkest and biggest test shaft of all time
+ Excellent detailing
+ There are lots of alternative ways to solve puzzles
+ Behind the Scenes areas are really show you behind the scenes of Aperture universe
+ When you finish a test chamber, you have to use "transport tubes" (like Portal 2 testing apparatus transportation tubes) instead of standard elevators. And you'll see more behind the scenes areas while travelling in tube
+ Some levels don't require loading
+ You solve some old style puzzles in salt mine caves
- Some logical problems
- Cubemap, water reflection, and some visual problems (like lighting issues)
- Some textures repeating (and it's bad)

+ Awesome soundtrack
+ Sounds and musics supports environment very well
+ You can feel lots of emotions while listening musics
+ Steam Soundtrack support (without payment)

+ This game builded on same Source Engine version as Portal 2 uses, so graphics actually same as Portal 2
+ Awasome fog and lighting effect
+ Deep environment feeling
+ Nigel looks so good
- Repeated, streched textures

Voice Acting:

+ Lots of people don't like voice actor of Nigel, but for me, its good
+ Nigel can reflect his emotions very well

Overall score: 91/100

Thank you for reading my review.
