After looking at some reviews, I expected Savant - Ascent to be a very short, competent shmup with a good soundtrack. After going on a five hour binge of playing the game, I can contest that it's not just a competent game, but rather great at what it does. The controls feel extremely responsive (I've used mouse & keyboard), the animations are well-excecuted, and there is no dull moment.
You start the game with only a rudimentary set of skills – and it's hard in the beginning (or at least was for me), however, you unlock extra abilities by progressing through the levels and game modes. You can probably beat the Story Mode in half an hour or so, but that's where the fun begins. Time Attack Mode is over quickly and good for a short game, while Endless Mode is where the real challenge lies – i.e. in defeating neverending ways of enemies, each wave stronger than the last.
The skills you unlock are tied in with six different music tracks you can change at will, all of which are great (and I'm not a huge fan of electronic music, in general).
It took me five hours to unlock all the different skills and get every achievement in the game – extremely good value, considering the price point of the game, I'd say. One thing to consider is, however, that this will be most enjoyable if you are into score attack games – beating the game once does not take very long, as I said. If you want to challenge yourself (and beat your friends' score, maybe?), though, this might be the ideal game for you.
