Update - GOTY Mode - v1.51.4

We spent the weekend trying to address a few of the bugs that has been reported in the Savant Steam Community, aswell as adding a little something extra!

GOTY mode has now been fixed up, and you can activate it by completing all of the achievements in the game. This will add a button on the Main Menu which let's you turn on GOTY mode.

When GOTY mode is turned on, enemies in the game will be replaced by goats-themed robots(and yes, we know it's a terrible pun).

We've added two new leaderboards for this occation, Vario GOTY(Time Attack) and Endless GOTY.

Other issues addressed in this patch is:
+ Fixed a crash when selecting CDs in the pause menu.
+ Fixed a crash that would occur when using chain attacks on enemy.
+ Fixed a couple of grammar errors.

We will continue to fix issues as they are reported, so please feel free to turn to the discussion community to report any faults.

Enjoy!

Savant - Ascent is a sort of twin stick shooter bullet hell type game. You are essentially rooted to two spots on each level, you can roll between them to avoid enemies, jump up and down, and that's it - although this sounds like it is restricting, you soon realize that it's all you need, and you probably don't need an extra thing to think about, so having just two positions is quite a good idea.

The art style is very nice. A lot of games are taking on this graphic style, and rightfully still as it does look good. The sprites of the main character and all the enemies look awesome too. Now, the music, if you are into electro/dubstep music, you may just have stumbled upon a gold mine. The sound track to Savant is amazing, there are about six different tracks to unlock and each of them is probably one of the best soundtracks you'll ever hear. I am surprised they haven't released the sound track as its own download to be honest!

Each of the levels is presented very well; the aim is to just kill everything on screen for a number of minutes, nothing too complex. The game does get increasingly difficult though, it will probably take you a few tries on each level before you get to grips with what you have to do. The last two stages probably had me raging more than any other game I've played. That brings me onto game length, the game is very short, I managed to finish the story in just about an hour, while this is short, there are two other game modes that will keep the replayability going. I can see some people have over 100 hours in this game purely from these modes bringing them back for more.

I would say Savant - Ascent has a place in most people's library, it's short and sweet and for £1, 59, you can't really go wrong can you?

This is a 2d Platform dash and shoot game.

This game is really genius !!
The music ... I love it, As long as you like the kind of music.
Controls are quite simple .... just shoot, jump and dash.
But secretly, this game is truly difficult in spite of the simplicity of the way the game is made.
Animations look amazing and think it's really a hidden gem.

You need to collect the 6 disc to get all of the powers.
The powers are needed to get to the final ending and clearing the game for 100%.
Getting all music discs is a really a great challenge.

If you think this game retail price is only for € 2,- that is crazy !!
It's haves a really high replay value for his money.
I really enjoyed this game for what it is.

This is a must have game !!
I give it a 10/10 because of the Difficulty, Replay Value, Beautiful Animation, Cheap Price and cool music.

I've always enjoyed Savant's music, so when I bought this for a single dollar, I thought it would be good music with some mediocre gameplay. That was stupid of me, really really stupid of me... The Gameplay is on par with the music and the crazy flashes to go with it! The game is very stimulating, I was litteraly glued to my computer screen for a while.

The controls were choppy to me at first, but when you get the hang of it they are not at all. The first 2 levels are quite easy, but the 3rd and after take some skill, the color changes on your missiles to the music. I've played some better synchronized games, but not this cheap!

In the end, the game is very affordable, and yet even more fun! 8.5/10

Before a quick review I want to mention the ridicilous ingame soundtrack (in a good way), such a good mach with the very intense gameplay and all these explosions and enemies surrounding you. I can't really describe it, I never played such a game before. And Its 1EUR on steam sales. You don't have any valid excuses to not buy it.

3. Fastest gameplay that I have ever been able to play, its like a shot of adrenaline!!
4. It's like $2. (0.99 for the Xmas sale right now)
5. Quick to learn, Hard to master, Impossible to put down.
6. You get to choose your own choice of f'ing songs to listen to during the game.
7. Gameplay never seems to end, always new fun stuff to do!!
8. BEST MUSIC
9. Looks perfect in graphics, its pixelated textures run easily at 120+fps and render that way!
10. Each level presents a new, creative challenge, different from the ones before.
11. Eventual objective is simple: Kill absolutely everything, and don't let them kill you.
12. Did I mention that it has THE BEST MUSIC POSSIBLE FOR THIS GAME?

Just buy it, seriously. You know that you have at least $2 from uneven price and purchases in Steam Wallet.

This is a nice surprise

Maybe not since I already have read the reviews.

But, yes, this game is awesome. Simple gameplay. 2D shooting arcade. Good replay value. As you progress, you unlock new abilities to aid your survival.

The most important thing, though, is the soundtrack. It's awesome. Quality electro music.

And with such low price. Undoubtedly. Recommend.

Well. I have to admit that I have no idea about what I should talk about first. When I bought, for 2$, I never expected it to give me so many hours of fun. I thought it would be a 15 minutes game and that I'd never launch it again after finishing it. Looking at my time in game might inform you of how wrong I was.

Short version : If you're looking for a 2D shmup with an awesome OST, go for it.

Longer version : I was already a fan of Savant and his other works (as Vinter in Hollywood/Vegas, and his other band names) before knowing the game. When I discovered the game, I didn't think I'd appreciate it so much. First of all, the songs of the OST, which are Savant's work from different albums (Alchemist, Overkill, ISM, Vario, Orakel and Cult), fit perfectly in the nervous gameplay. The difficulty which increases along the levels is here, but it isn't too big, and it permits to have fun even after the twentieth try (gotta admit I ragequited a few times, but that's another story). And when you're finished with the five levels and if you love tryharding and competition, you'll love the Endless and Time Trial mode, which require some patience and skills (and ragequits) to master. Also, the characters from Savant's lore like Vario, the Samurai (spoiler : they are the bosses (spoiler: they're ♥♥♥♥ing hard at first)) and the Alchemist (the protagonist, who can be seen on Alchemist's album cover) aren't too much (I don't know how to say it, so I'll just assume you got the idea). The only thing that's bad for the game in my opinion are the bugs, but they're funnier than boring and the developer listens to the player and push updates from time to time.

tl;dr savant memes tryhard godlike ost GOTY (got it ?) game 10/10

Savant - Ascent may have a killer soundtrack, but that's not the only good thing about it.

This game is a simple 2D shoot-'em-up, played mainly with the mouse. Savant, your character, is stationed at the center of the screen, on one of two platforms, and your goal is to survive the hordes of enemies around you. You can "dodge" by quickly switching platforms, which will keep you alive much longer if used correctly. Power-ups, unlocked by collecting CD pieces dropped by certain enemies, make the the game a little more interesting, and the levels get more difficult, but the basic gameplay remains the same.

It's fun blasting away enemies, having to decide which enemies to target, how best to use your abilities to defeat them. But the pixel graphics and the amazing soundtrack by Savant (no, that's not a coincidence) aren't enough to conceal the repetitiveness of the gameplay. This game is more of a score attack than a constantly evolving experience, since most of the replay value comes from attempting to beat previous scores. That having been said, it's probably a good thing that the game is short, otherwise it would drag out and lose its entertainment value, which it currently has a lot of.

Pros
  • Shooting up hordes is fun
  • Power-ups and dodging mechanics make the game interesting
  • Absolutely stunning soundtrack

Cons
  • Panning around the screen feels clunky at times
  • Gameplay is somewhat repetitive
(Note: I wouldn't say being a short game is a con in this case, for reasons stated above, and the price tag)

TL;DR: Savant - Ascent is definitely short, but it's awesome, and I'd say the low price tag was worth it.

I enjoy Savant as an artist, which if you aren't aware he makes the music that goes wubwubwub, and I brought this awhile ago because I saw that Savant was releasing a game.. So I had to add it to my collection of games, I only recently decided to play it, until then it had just been sat in my libary being uninstalled and unplayed. I'm glad I decided to play it..

The game itself if amazing, a really fantastic soundtrack, given you like Savant's music, it is all out chaos, colours, explosions, and just generally fun. There's Story mode, Time attack and Endless mode. Story mode is fairly straight forward go from A to B killing things, when B is reached theres gonna be a little cutscene and then a boss fight, then a cutscene. Simple really. Time attack is story mode but the enemys spawn faster, hence, you need to kill them faster, and then you get through the story in little to no time - about 2 to 3 minutes for me boss time depending. Finally there's Endless mode which is the second level for an extended period of time. The second level happens to be a elevator ride up, so you go up and up and up killing things. It gets progressively harder but I've found with each go I get a little bit futher by learning a new little tactic or plan or whatever.

The gameplay is fairly simplistic, you have a left and right platform that you can move between to dodge incoming attacks. The control give a good idea of how simplistic the game is:
Left mouse button: - Shoot/Pick up CDs
Arrow-keys/WASD-keys: - Dodge/Jump
Right mouse button/Down/S-key - Shoot special attack(when unlocked)
Space/Ctrl/Shift - Ignore CD pickups
Q - Pick up closest CD

It's a pretty good/great game to be completely honest, and for £1.59 what excuse do you have for not buying it?

Good game. The actual story mode is very short and you'll probably beat it in 10-15 minutes but most of the replay value comes from trying to increase your high score in endless mode and time attack and collect all the CD's (powers) it's a great time waster or just something to get sucked into for a few minutes.

The controls are tight and precise but simple. The game is very easy to learn but hard to master. You'll lose a lot but it's worth it and just as fun as the first time you played it. The graphics are charming and music upbeat and awesome. Overall the $2 is very worth it. I'd imagine a game like this to go for at least $5 or $10

it's a fun game even if it's short it's an intense experience ...

the visuals are great , nicely drawn sprites , the controls are good and the music fit the mood. very arcades like , simple but very much alive. the levels are designed pretty much like some of the older watch and games sort of gameplay in the sense that yes , the character can only move from two different spot as he jump on to another. there are specials attacks that can be unlocked by gathering music discs and the game become slitghtly easier once you got your hands on all of them , It's always fun to comeback and fire up a few rounds , try to better your endless mode scores or just replay the regulars story mode levels.

thru I wished they din't made the samurai such a cheap fight , he move so fast that the only way to avoid his attack is just memorizing what he is gonna do and try again and again untill you know everything that he his gonna do before he does it , he is kind of a stain in what would be a finely tuned game which is hard , unforgiving but fair challenge.

well I did said that the controls are good , with the keyboard and mouse of course but then they completly messed up the gamepad controls. I don't know why or 'what the hell they where thinking?' ... when played with a gamepad the controls are the like of an old arcade twin shooters which is fine but where it's hurt is that the same joystick which allow you to shoot your gun around also move the camera to it's maximum distance ... the camera become completly chaotics when you start shooting around with a gamepad , it's just become a unplayable mess.

overall I leave a 7/10 for this game , it's would be a 9/10 but a cheap ♥♥♥ endgame boss and messed up controllers support can't stay unpunished.
