Damned: A Randomized Online Horror Game

- What is Damned?

Damned is a randomized online horror game for up to 5 players (4 survivors and 1 monster).
You’ll be able to play as one of four people trapped in different haunted places (hotels, hospitals, etc).
As a survivor your main objective will be finding your way out, as well as helping your friends get out too. You’ll often find yourself on the edge, hearing and seeing ghostly things, trying to find keys and items to help in your escape. And sometimes you’ll find yourself running desperately from a monster, who’s there only to find and kill you and your friends.
You’ll also be able to play as the monster. The game will feature different monsters, each one unique in its gameplay and hunting style.

- What kind of horror game is Damned?

Damned explores the sense of being defenseless against a powerful supernatural force. The survivors can’t directly affect the monster in any way. When it’s there to get you, your only chance is to run and hide.
This perception of being defenseless is very strong, primal and terrifying, it builds up anxiety and makes you really scared, fearing any unexplained noise or movement.
This is how Damned creates horror in a multiplayer game session, and we believe it to be super effective! (tested and approved!)

- Why is Damned a randomized game?

Every stage in Damned is randomized:
  • Almost all the objects in a stage may or may not appear;
  • The item system is fully random too, randomizing which item will appear in the game, and where it'll be;
  • The way to win a match as a survivor is also randomized;
  • Even the stage may trigger random events to scare the survivors inside.

- Why is Damned a competitive and cooperative game?

Because in a full game, with 4 survivors and 1 monster, there’ll be a survivor “team” cooperating to try and escape together, and at the same time they’ll be competing against a monster, trying to flee from him and deny each one of its attempt to hunt and kill a survivor.

- How to play as a survivor?

As a survivor you’ll be cooperating with your friends (up to 4 survivors in a single game session):
You and your friends will be searching the level for keys and items to help in your escape;
Each survivor will have a flashlight that can be turned on and off, helping you see your surroundings, but at the same time letting the monster know where you are;
The survivors will be able to manipulate objects throughout the hotel, like drawers, doors, safes, cabinets, wardrobes;
Challenge yourself to find the exit and get out alive.

- How to play as the monster?

As the monster, your game will be all about competing alone against the survivors team.
The game will feature different monsters, each one unique in its play style. It's up to you to play a few rounds with each monster and decide which one works best for you.
How are you going to hunt and kill the survivors?

- Why is Damned worth buying?

Because it’s fun!
It’s really scary, you’ll find yourself on the edge a lot of times, trying to evade the monster or trying to pay closer attention because you don’t know if the sound you just heard is some random noise or if it is the monster haunting you.
It’s a real horror game, it explores deeply the feeling of being completely defenseless against a powerful force that can finish you easily. Your only choice is to run and hide!
And also because it’s really fun to play as the monster as well. You’ll keep haunting and building up anxiety in people, making them terribly scared of you. We really put you in the skin of a terrifying monster.

This "Game" is basically a robbery. The developer created a playable beta, grab your money and disappear. A business practice like this should put those developer in jail.

In all honesty underneath the not-so polished graphics lies a game that is well worth playing. Teamwork and communication is required of the survivors which is why I recommend this game if you have a group of friends to play it with. The game is slow paced in terms of gameplay so if you're looking for something faster this may not be the game for you, but the slowness factor does add into the fear that the survivors feel which I feel is what the main focus of a horror game should be. 10/10

Damned is a really great concept but an absolutely horrendous execution. I picked this game up years ago and had a blast, and probably even now I could boot it up with some friends and still have a blast, that's just how amazing the concept of a 4v1 asymmetrical horror survival game is.

The main strength this game had was that it filled a niche that nobody else filled, yes, it was bug-ridden, yes it has janky animations, and yes, it's unbalanced to all hell, but that was fine, because it was still fun at the end of the day, it was still playable.

Back then we thought they'll fix it, you know. We thought they'll fix up the bugs, add some more features and this game is gonna be great. Well, they added stuff, yes, and they fixed some bugs, but... the core game is still a mess. They also seemingly stopped updating the game, or if anything, they update at such a slow pace that it's hardly worth it anymore. Certain monsters are blatantly broken on certain maps, I'm fairly certain you can get stuck because keys don't always spawn properly and that's not to mention the many other different issues this game has, like performance, hit detection or the fact that you sometimes cannot loot vital items from a dead player's corpse.

Sadly, with the release of Dead By Daylight coming up, I see no hope for this anymore. I've said earlier that the main thing this had going was that it filled a niche single-handedly, but Dead By Daylight, (albeit not without it's own problems) is essentially a less frustrating, more polished version of Damned, that I recommend everyone check out now that Damned is basically, well, "Damned".

Really good and fresh (at least to me) idea.
I spent A LOT of time playing this game, BUT it has some downsides that will be explained later in this review.

The rough idea is being a 1 vs 4 cat and mouse gameplay that's terrifying.

The 4 survivors can't defend themselves with weapons, but with caution, quick reaction and coordination. Their goal is to reach the safe room which is locked down. In order to unlock it you have to find the silver key that spawned in a random location on the map. So your ultimate task is to find the silver key!
There are many other keys spread on the whole map that will unlock certain rooms. So, basically you unlock more and more areas, search them for keys or similiar items and make progress until you find the holy grail: The silver key.
Then you only have to get to the safe room alive.

The monster obviously has to kill all the survivors. There are 4 different monsters to choose in the game at the moment. None of their playstyles are similiar.
- The "Lurker" switches between 2 forms. In the ghost form it's setting up acoustic traps to locate the survivors positions, because it can't see any player or door (so it can't see the players progress either).
The idea is to get near the noises that have been set off, switch to the physical form and hunt the little ♥♥♥♥♥ (god bless those hearts for saving our people) for a limited amount of time. It's a terrifying jump scare if a lurker pops up next to you. No cheap ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t like FNAF and most other horror games (*oooooooh snap*).
- The "Phantom" can't see, but hear very well. If a survivor makes any kind of noise the Phantom will unveil him for a brief period of time (even through walls), depending on the noises volume and distance to the monster. In the end it just floats with a set speed through the map, which sounds boring at first glance, but becomes repetitive with the possibility to get tricked by the survivors. You have to be aware of the survivors' counter play style in tricking the Phantom with fake locations.
- "Mary" is sobbing through the map, trying to get close to the survivors and make them look at her to gain frenzy. At max frenzy she will be able to attack and charge the enemies with force. Because of her sobbing she can teleport to random locations on the map, with restrictions of course. She's pretty much the opposite of the Phantom. SHE has to play mind games with the survivors to get close to them.
- "Fallen" has 2 stances, too. At start she is invisible and can't see the survivors nor their progress. She is setting up stone guards to unveil the survivors. If a survivor is unveiled while she's nearby she automatically switches to her physical form and hunts down the survivors. The statues can't block areas since the survivors are able to destroy them. So there's no abusing of the ability.

The very small team of 9heads tried to make the game fair, but scary to the survivors, resulting in the monsters seeming to be overpowered to new players, because of their one hit mechanics.
In the end they're fine, with some slight differences in balancing from map to map.

The maps are built with multiple schemes that are reusing the scheme based assets and pre-built areas for the sake of more maps. Because of the nature of each map having it's own gameplay flow this method works very well.

The graphics aren't fancy, but fitting. The sound is good and athmospheric, except from those survivor death screams.

Now the big downside for some people:

The game has bugs. Many of them. Some very little and pretty much unnoticable, some gamebreaking.
Some people experience pretty much no problems at all where others can't even run a match without insane fps drops or game crashes. This problem in most cases results in hardware, but not in outdated hardware. It's just bad luck of using hardware components that cause problems for this exact game.
In the end, at least to me, I would give the game a shot, because the experience is great... if it just wasn't for the possible bugs.

Pros:

- Unique experience
- Very good coop game
- Differently flowing maps
- 4 very different monsters resulting in different tactics depending from map to map
- Good atmosphere

Cons:

- Bugs
- No bots (so no single player. It's recommended to play with exact 5 players for the best experience and balancing)
- Low support for this game at this point of time (they're working on a new project now)
- Difficult to play this game without friends because of the trend of password protected lobbies
- Sometimes the community just sucks

Btw: Phantom isn't op. You just suck.

Pros: I enjoy scaring myself with this game, and its very fun and hilarious playing with friends. I hate when someone is playing Mary because she reminds me the girl from The Ring lol.

Cons: Only problem with this game I have come cross so glitchy moments. If you do not enjoy glitches, do not get it.

I really, really want to like this game and recommend it, but Damned has a range of bugs and glitches between a 7/15fps lock, monster glitches, other performance issues even on high-end PCs. The development of this game has been far too slow with updates not happening for months, and a promise to fix performance issues in 2014 but still hasn't been fixed as of 2016. The community has pretty much completely disappeared, so unless you're lucky and find an open server or have friends to play with you won't be getting very much game play out of this. I only decided to write this review because of how awful the performance bug is. I was originally running about 25fps, not good because my computer isn't great, but playable. Today I get on and I'm locked on 7fps. No updates since the last time I played was a week ago, Now in order to play with my friends I have to go through some annoying methods to try and unlock the fps. Uninstalling, restarting PC, reinstalling, adjusting settings both in an out of the game, I really enjoy the game when it runs well and when my friends play, but dealing with the bugs and stuff is incredibly annoying, and requires a ton of patience. Therefore, I cannot recommend this game to anyone for the price it is. If it ends up on sale and your friends have it, it may be worth the try. Maybe.

Edit: After doing all the stuff to reset the framerate I now run 60fps, so my frames have been consistantly dropping.

Satisfying and challenging, Damned brings a dark atmosphere, in which you never know where the danger lies. This is the point that makes each minute heavier and heavier on the gameplay. It reaches its objective very well.

Technically speaking, the game lacks some polishment on menus, aspects of gameplay and graphics. I would even say that sometimes it looks like a game that wasn't fully ready to launch. The two major points I disliked on gameplay are:

Lack of team play - Even though the game "requires" a team to start, in-game you do not have situations where the team is needed. Of course, playing along with the team and with strategy would make it easier, but is not what happens when you're solo playing online, with strangers.

Monsters too strong - I felt that the monsters always have a huge advantage over survivors. Maybe because of the previous point: I didn't played a game where survivors actively helped each other. The game gets really hard when the monster player has any sense of play. He will win almost surely.

Aside from these things (minor technical issues and gameplay problems), the game seemed to have a huge development potential. It has the right atmosphere, has a good idea and it's entertaining. I hope the developers continue with the game in mind, even if it is in another title.
