Among the Sleep Patch 2.0.0 is out!

Greetings one and all!

We’re back with a big update!

Since last time we’ve upgraded to Unity 5. This was a very substantial upgrade that changed parts of the game’s structure so that we had to find new solutions to various problems. Some of these are more or less noticeable than others.

The biggest changes are the ones affecting performance. We’ve been very hard at work to make the game run a lot better, increasing frame rates and decreasing loading times, especially in lower end computers.

We’ve also added a commentary track where you can get a bit of the developer’s thoughts about various aspects of the production. By turning on the commentary track in the options menu, you will find commentary nodes throughout the various chapters. Walk up to them and give them a click to hear our lovely voices talking about video gamey stuff!

Also, cloud saving is now enabled.

Important notice: Your old save files will not work with the new updated version of the game. You can keep using the old version of the game by opting in to use the development branch on steam. You can also use the console to unlock chapters. For more information, see: http://www.krillbite.com/2016/02/17/major-steam-build-update/

Patch notes:

Unity 5 conversion:
  • Slight changes to physics behavior
  • Visual changes and minor improvements
  • Tons of bug fixes and tweaks

Performance:
  • Brand new manual occlusion system
  • General optimization

Misc:
  • Cloud saving now enabled!
  • Added commentary track!
  • Bug fixes of audio system
  • Overall tweaks of ambience and soundscapes
  • Minor language tweaks and bug fixes
  • Added Polish subtitles

“Among the Sleep deserves a great deal of credit for its story.”
8/10 – The Guardian

“You can never trust what's real and what's you being a scared little kid.”
8/10 – Joystiq

“Krillbite's horror game is an impressive feat in video game storytelling. It leaves more of an impact in a distilled 3 to 4 hours than some games with 60-hour campaigns.”
7.8/10 – Game Informer

About This Game

Among the Sleep is a first person horror adventure, in which you play a two year old child. After waking up in the middle of the night to mysterious sounds, you start exploring the dark looking for comfort.

The game explores horror through atmosphere and exploration, not with scores and combat systems. In Among the Sleep you’re vulnerable, scared, and trying to make sense of the world.

The game has Oculus Rift DK1 support, but further support will not be developed.

What people are saying

  • "More, please!"
    - Kotaku
  • "Everything, from the sound of infantile breathing to the wobbliness of the camera and the unsteadiness of little hands, has been designed to accurately put ourselves behind the eyes of a toddler. Watching the trailer, the effect is simply astounding, while the Paranormal Activity-style scares that surround the child are pulled off with panache."
    - Gamefront
  • "Its depiction of a first-person horror told through the eyes and stumbling little legs of a two-year old is as intriguing as anything I've seen all year, and reminiscent of a time when games actively sought out new ways to play and new stories to tell."
    - Eurogamer

This game is great for if you want to feel fear instead of just get jumped for a second. it has a awesome story that surprisingly is going on right now. I recommend this game 110%. the only down side is the length of the game, its a little shorter than i expected. But still its awesome.

Only lasts ~2 hours, feel of playing as a two year old vanishes instantly after the initial stage and what's left is a subpar first person "horror" where there's an actual threat only 2 times IIRC. Might be entertaining if it's your first attempt at the genre, otherwise avoid.

I highly recommend this atmospheric game. Not for its gameplay, because it's fairly clunky and the puzzles aren't very challenging. I recommend it because of the story that the game tells. It is a haunting and depressing tale of a toddler and his memories of his mother. Goosebumps guaranteed.

The moral of this game is that if you don't want to be scared, guns guns guns! Now, some might say it'd be a little strange for a toddler to be packing a .45, but it'd be no stranger than a talking teddy bear.

Among the Sleep is a freshly distinct title to the PC gaming franchise, which leads up to why I give it its 9 points.

For an indie game, it's is almost one of the best of its kind. One thing being the good 3D graphics, despite the texture quality being a little bit on the low side, losing its 1 point. The game play keeps you on the edge of your seat as a baby having to deal with its mom disappearing due to a metaphorical storyline, making you ponder about all the possibilities. Leading to a climactic ending to which no one could have expected! The puzzles may be simplistic, but only adds to the realism that the main protagonist's mind is still developing as a young baby. Can't say that the game itself is very long, but it's a game you can play over and over and not get tired of the grim storyline and climactic events.

"Among the Sleep? More like "Among the Trash!" ~Oscar Wilde

Among the Trash
Is where this game belongs. It's an interesting concept, but the story has a dumb, predictable twist, and the game is so full of bugs and glitches that it's hard to even get immersed. It's possible the developers may have patched it since I last played it, but is it too much to ask that your two hour walking simulator at least works properly on release?

Let me paint you a picture: There's a game with three characters, and a monster. There are several clues that the monster is supposed to be a metaphor for someone, so logically it'd have to be one of the characters. Is it:

A: The protagonist

B: The character that never leaves the protagonist's side

or

C: A character who is absent for 95% of the game

Hmm, I wonder who will be revealed to be secretly a terrible human being in the shoehorned in twist ending?

It's another "great idea ruined by hack writers" scenario. I'm disappointed. Oh well, into the trash it goes.

I think Among the Sleep is amazing, and I've already had ideas about future games.

.You should create a game where the main character is older and continue the end of Prologue

.He should get married in the same house, where the character's 2nd birthday was held, (not the Prologue house)

.His daughter/son should continue a new story (It's just some ideas. You don't have to use mine!)

.Why is his mom a monster? There was a story in the main game where your grandma is a monster, but the main character's mom? How?

Those are my main ideas. If you are not interested, don't use them. If you are, think about it. You don't HAVE to use them, my ideas are JUST ideas.

A decently short, horror & puzzle game. It's roughly a 2 1/2 hour journey.

There is no combat, only running and hiding from the scary things that lurk around the darkness. Your goal is to find your mother who is somewhere in your house, then out of no where you go on a crazy adventure with your teddy bear and he doesn't mess around, he got you going to all sorts of crazy places to collect important things. (I think it's drugs).

Anywho, great game and I recommend it. The atmosphere is much better than a lot of higher budget horror games these days.

I'd say this game is more creepy than scary. Although it has a good story, even if it's a bit short I suggest this game because of the idea, the subject and the fact that you finally see the world from the eyes of a toddler on a wild journey through what you could call, a nightmare.

***After latest patch***

I've always been fascinated by the game concept, to be introduced to the world through a child's eyes. Where everything and anything is possible. A world so full of life and colors, danger and adventure, fear and magic. Nothing your plain adult life could bring you close to. A world where you can be the hero of your bedtime story. You begin your adventure at night, the time when we rest after a long day, time where nothing mostly ever happens. But not for a 2 years old!

Among the Sleep, introduces you to a terrifying experience, which is completely insane and traumatizing on a basic human level. Takes place on a stormy late night, your mother is missing and you're a helpless little infant who sets off on a quest to rescue her. While he faces his fears of being lost in the dark, monsters lurking in the closets and every dark corner, worlds shifting, objects stretching which gives the illusion of hellish presence in the most clever ways I have ever seen, that you begin to imagine things and jump at the slightest noise. A psychological masterpiece.

Many recent horror games, such as Outlast, Amnesia, DreadOut and more, have been aiming to achieve making the player feel helpess in the face of danger or supernatural exsitence, by stripping away any means of fighting back. Which is probably the scariest feeling of all. But I can't imagine what could be more helpless than a little toddler, who can't yet talk and can barely walk, so you're basically forced to cope with your surrounding.

A big thank you to the Devs for releasing an update with new achievements. Being an achievement hunter, I had to replay the game, and it was even more rewarding than my first playthrough. It opened my eyes and made me realize what a special little game it was. It also added a Slenderman feeling into it, only a toddler version.
The game runs perfectly smooth, haven't encountered a single problem, still has its amazing visuals and physics and I noticed a greater update in the ambiance and sounds, which creates a much better horror atmposphere.

I strongly believe this game deserves a lot more credit, as it leaves a strong impact on you that a lot of big titles can't do. With its provoking story and innovation to the horror genre, I urge you to try it.
Such rich gem is very rare to find!

A short but great game. I love every thing detail and the sad story (it reminds me so much with the game Papo & Yo). Enjoy this game (inclusive DLC Prologue). I give the game 90 % only because its really short so enjoy every second and try to find every detail of the game. Get the game with 66-75 % or higher discount.

Its well made game. Simple and realy short. With end you were realy do not expect.

But i can recommend it only for horror, psycho and indie fans.
This game missing something more because if sum it up you are moving forward all time. No real challenge.

Among the Sleep is a fantastic game, creepy all the way through. What starts as a pretty innocent birthday party, turns into one of the most scary video game experiences I've ever had. (I dont play too much horror games). The sound design is simply brilliant, the levels are masterly designed, and the story and atmosphere is just perfect. It seems like every single little thing in this astonishing little Indie-game is refined to the almost perfect.

Among the Sleep Review -NO SPOILERS!-(except for the part about the footie pajamas)

Among the Sleep is a unique game that is played in the innocent eyes of a young child. I enjoyed this game - not only because of the horror element, which was very well done - but also because it told a valuable and emotional story with only a few words. In the minds of toddlers, many things and situations that happen in their lives sometimes don’t make sense. This game did a great job “translating” what was really happening into something that a toddler would see and understand. Moreover, it was absolutely terrifying. Many things make this game unique and different from most other first person games. First of all, the only way to transport yourself is toddling or crawling-which can make running away from certain death quite tense at times. Second, you play only two feet from the ground making everything around huge and curious. Third, you can see your body if you look down! You’re not a floating head bobbing around! Also, the baby footie pajamas are very nice. There will never be a dull moment when this incredible game is played and it may or may not make one speechless for a few days. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a clean and eerie game that has good morals and lessons to be learned - including not making a single noise. There is one thing all must know when playing this: don’t break a bottle.

This review contains a couple of mere spoilers.

Among the Sleep has a very impressive affect on the player. It shows the great idea that only a genius could think of - using the perspective of a baby. Throughout this baby perspective, we can clearly notice that the baby has worries over many things like their mother's scream. At the beginning of the game, the character's mother goes to answer the door that had just had the doorbell ring. The mother then screams which queues the music and visual effects to give a dramatic effect. This happens to show that the baby feels stressed and panicked as though the mother is giving a distress call - an in-danger tone. I find this is a very creative idea and the creator really understands how emotion is built up in a game.

After seeing the monster, I have a slight lust of disappointment, for as soon as a monster is shown in a game, that ruins the horror element of a build up. No studios are able to create a monster that is more horrifying that what we, as consumers, create in our head from mysterious build-ups, such as lighting effects and creaky floorboards. As soon as a monster is shown in a game, it automatically drops some tension and makes the player less scared of the monster. This game has lost the horrific momentum by showing the monster, and the monster doesn't look very scary, but I guess there are limits as to how scary you can make a monster look. And to be quite straight... what is a monster? A monster is a horrific creature or person that is created IN OUT HEADS by dramatic effects and noises. Making a monster be shown in a game really doesn't make it a monster anymore.

The teddy bear's voice acting and sounds are very good. The sound effects successfully create tension and the teddy bear successfully sounds like a Paedophile - I mean a nice friend. In addition, the animations of movement in the game are very smooth, however are a little slow and... the opposite of slick. Whatever that word is.

As far as I can judge on the game mechanics, they are quite simple and not all that amazing. Animations for the things the character uses are very simple and could be improved through more time in development.

I do believe this game has a really good story line, really good twists and successfully shows the in-depth perspective of a baby in every-day situations. Among the Sleep shows a definite prime example of what a baby would think about as they go to sleep on a dark, windy night. It shows how the baby is petrified and shows how simple things are over-exaggerated in the baby's mind, such as a wardrobe.

Overall, I think this game really is worth the play and if you don't play this game, you'd be missing out on a lot of interesting perspective.

Very cool game. It's not the typical horror game considering you're playing a toddler, which gives it a nice little twist. I loved the story, and the ending scene was fantastic.. it wasn't what I was expecting! This whole game was brilliantly made and a lot of thought went in to it. The game's "scary-ness" definitely increased the farther you got into the game.

To give you an idea of what you do in the game, you explore areas trying to uncover the secrets of what happened to the toddler's mom. You explore different "zones", and your objective is to basically collect pieces of the puzzle (items) while hiding from monsters.

However, the game itself is very short. I finished the whole game in maybe 4 hours, and that was me taking my time. I also think it's overpriced ($15) considering how short it is. I would recommend getting it whenever it's on sale.

But other than that, the game was great! It had a great story, it was creepy and scary, and it wasn't difficult to play. I recommend trying it!

I'll let others review the scary aspect of this game. I wanna focus on the toddler simulation aspect.

Holy cow. I wish there was a way to just have a toddler simulator based on these mechanics. After I played through the actual storyline I went back and started over again and just played around in the playroom and was blown away by the attention to physics. Drag a stool across the wooden floor, it slides okay. Push it across carpet and you're in for a struggle. You can't lift a pillow above your head but you can toss an inflatable ball a few feet.

You can pick things up, put them down, open and close things, climb and even fall. There's no health bar so spills don't really matter. You wobble when you walk and make appropriate sounds as you move around. And it's interesting to see the world from the perspective of one so small (again). In all I would love to see more done with just the simulator side of things. It would be a riot to run around the house and interact with the environment without having to worry about the 'bad guys' getting you.

After a long hard week of adulting, sometimes I don't want my gaming to give me puzzles or enemies to deal with. I just want to unwind. but I'm not into the farming or app-type games. This is just my style! I'd love to see more walking simulators like this.

That said, the spooky aspect to this game and the storyline are both awesome. Sometimes though I couldn't help wondering if -I- was the monster. Something about all the crawling through vents and bookcases and scurrying under beds...
