Screwfly's new horror strategy game Fear Equation, now on Steam

If you've been anticipating the arrival of our latest game Fear Equation on Steam, your chance to venture into the fog is here!

The game is now out and to celebrate, we're having a 25% off sale for a limited time.

Fear Equation is a genre-spanning horror strategy title where no two games are the same. The world is covered in a mysterious fog. Most who enter the fog disappear, and those who survive say it brings their nightmares to life.

You are The Engineer and you're in control of a very special train. Will you rescue survivors and keep them safe from their self-inflicted terrors? More importantly... can you lead them to salvation?

Here's what awaits you in Fear Equation:

  • Send passengers out into the fog to investigate locations, find survivors and bring back supplies
  • Manage defenses, power and resources. But be careful: if you aren’t the saviour they need, they’ll revolt against you
  • Handle disputes between carriage leaders that can end in dramatic events that swing the balance of power between your defenders and detractors
  • Monitor your passengers’ dreams to discover what kind of horrors will attack the train – and how to defeat them
  • Create your own Engineer with special modifiers that determine your train’s starting conditions, as well as the course the game will take
  • Customise the passengers on board your train, importing photos of friends to give your game that personal touch... right before you send them to their demise
  • Do your best to avoid the military and cult-like "Fearless" as they seek to eliminate anyone caught in the fog
  • Interact with intricate machines and devices within a richly detailed, fully 3D cabin
So, Engineer... will the fog claim you?

Personal Rating: Good Ideas, Not So Fine Implementation
Classic Rating: ★★★☆☆

EDIT: After spending a while more time playing Zafehouse, I'm loving it!

First of all I liked "Zafehouse: Diaries" so far (I haven't played so much) but it surely could be improved in several aspects:

● Random characters generation can get you 5 people almost all without any skill: in my second playthrough 2 women couldn't even prepare a meal, let's not talk about making traps..
● Relations are the weakest point in the game, IMHO. After 8 (ingame) hours gameplay (basically 8 turns) all the survivors got angry at each other and the "spreading rumors" feature which should be used to consolidate those relations was pretty much useless: can be used one time every 24hrs and it's not really effective.
● This is a text adventure game, I would expect some translations, also considering that most of the messages repeat themselves as soon as in 2 hours gameplay.
● Lack of a proper resolution.
● Price is too high: 10€ at the time of this writing.

I do not want to penalize Zafehouse's developers (rating down their game) because it is original and enjoyable but I would not recommend buying it at full price; trade it with somebody (like I did) or wait for a bundle.

*Artwork/Animation: 9/10
The artwork for this game is actually nice. There's not much of course because you're meant to be reading from a diary not looking at characters performing actions. But you still get to see Polaroid pictures of like houses or items found etc. It's nice.
The animation is actually really cool for this game. Instead of just making a diary you read from then choose actions based on the scenario you're reading, you select an action then read the outcome. The devs did a really good job of creating this unique play style and I really enjoy playing it. There's an animation for when you get hurt; blood will splatter on the screen. When it turns night time the brightness level of the game decreases then brightens again when it becomes morning in the game. When you travel to other parts of the neighborhood you location is marked on the map. Little animation details like this really made the game for me and I'm so happy I bought it.

*Sound: 7/10
The sound is yet again a win for me. When you're building something in the game you hear the construction sounds. When zombies are near or attacking you, you hear them as well, etc, etc. My only criticism for this is when you're fighting a lot of zombies at once the zombie sounds can be repetitive and annoying after the first day and a half. Other than that over all pretty pleased with this category as well.

*Hours to complete: 10/10
You can play this game until you get tired of it. Infinite hours of play time = more for your money.

*Story Line: 8/10
You play as a randomly generated survivor trying to.. Well.. Survive. Not only that you're also trying to rescue other survivor and guide all of you to safety. I took off of points because the story line is the same as every other zombie themed game, movie, or book out there. I didn't take much off though because that's actually kind of uncontrollable. But I also like how this game goes in depth into the characters you can play. You'll have a Polaroid picture of what your character looks like then if you click on it, you'll actually get a brief description of what that person is good at, their background story, age, etc. So the things they could control to make the story line different from other zombie themed things they did. Which makes me one happy customer.

*Game Play: 9/10
The game is a heavily focused survival turn based RPG. It's challenging even on the easiest setting. Which by the way, there's only 3 settings. Easy - just an exploration learn the basics/mechanics unlimited time type of game play. Then you have your normal which is like an actual story line mission game play. Then you have the most difficult which is timed with a mission. Such a cool game I love every minute of it. Well, except for when I do something stupid that makes a lot of noise and attracts zombies to come kill all of my survivors.. But if you have more common sense than I do you won't rage quit nearly as much. (jokes.. Kind of.. I really do rage quit this game sometimes)

*Price: 10/10
As of right now it's $9.99
Totally worth it in my opinion. If you pick it up on sale, you're getting even more for your money. I'm such a die hard zombie game/movie/book fan that I'm easily pleased with this stuff, but I also expect quite a bit from them so that being said, my standards for zombie games are pretty high. I enjoy every minute playing. The only possible boring part is waiting for things to be built or when you're waiting for something to be made or explored and that's not even "boring" to me. Anyway I'll stop rambling now. Next category!

*Over all
I would recommend this game to anyone who likes:
-Zombie anything
-Survival games
-Zombie books
-Cheap but awesome games

TL;DR: The concept of the game is nothing new(many flash games who do better, aka last stand etc) but also the gameplay is just broken that even with high end gear you can have problems with 1-2 zombies and die.

The game concept feels really good but actually this has been made several times and more complex than this. Free flash games like the last stand combine the hunting for items and fighting zombies aswell, way much more better. The controles are clunky and way too complicated. There is also too much micromanagement that is no way fun at all.

The gameplay sucks and is only based on randomness. Even when someone is equipped with high end gear you can still have problems with 1-2 zombies. Also a person could take even 24 hours to just pull (1!!!) zombie corpse from the living room away. You cant equip items a person directly , what is really annoying.

Zafehouse tries to get the player by having unique gameplay features like spying/looking into windows to see how many zombies are inside a building or being able to have your survivors guard your house or give them work like dragging zombie corpses away from your house. But still, the gameplay is just unbalanced and is too short to give even more fun than 1-2 hours of gameplay. After that you have already seen pretty much everything, except the random encounters of course, that just feel that the dev. just wanted some decision making inside the game.

Wouldnt recommend it in any way, but had potential if the game had either be more focused on balance,>(and more content aswell) or having an actual gameplay, not just managing randomness where you have just slightly controles about the happening.

It's like a mix of turn-based strategy and text adventure to create a diary-like experience of the zombie apocalypse. Each playthrough feels unique, and with certain implementations such as character relationships and permadeath, it can be quite a stressful experience. The developer is pretty cool too, even if the updates had taken a while to come along in the past.

What can I describe about Zafehouse: Diaries?
Its a zombie survivial horror game that isnt typically 1st person, you take on the role of different survivors (including yourself but the character creation isnt working) and in a diary themed turn based game you have to keep them alive at all costs.
Its interesting and fun but gets a bit tiring after a while.
Pros:
Sound: Amazing sound- feels like you are really there whether barracading a door or fighting off zombies.
Diary Style: Its interesting keeps the anticipating going- never knowing if your survivior survived.
Different types of gameplay: Character creation and different types of hardmode, etc.
Cons:
Feels very short.
Character Creation is not working at all!
Bit repetative with the same maps, etc.
A interesting concept but it depends on what you like.
