About the Game

In the 1930s, with freight traffic increasing, the Union Pacific Railroad was struggling to get trains over the rugged grades of the Wahsatch Mountains. To stay competitive, a more powerful locomotive was needed to speed up the railroad and to reduce the rising cost of helpers and extra trains. An original design of 4-12-2 was proposed, but after much deliberation, an arrangement of 4-6-6-4 was finalised and the Challenger was born. In August 1936, number 3900 was the first to enter revenue earning service with a refrigerator train from Council Bluffs. A total of 252 were eventually operating around North America.

Included Scenario:

• Steam Gala - Castle Rock Railroad is playing host to a steam spectacular with both preserved Challengers on the line as well as other steamers. Drive 3977 to a timetable down the route.
• We Built This City - Castle Rock is enjoying some boom years and much building work is taking place throughout the city. There is much freight on the line and you must drive a Challenger on freight duties bringing coal to the cement plant at Castle Rock.
• LA Excursion - In 1994 a City of Los Angeles sponsored excursion train ran from Salt Lake City to Ontario, CA from where a "Cajon Pass Steam Special" ran to Barstow. Drive the return leg of this incredible passenger run.
• Pomona to Yermo - On a run from Pomona to Yermo drive the section from San Bernardino to Victorville where a passenger stop must be made. You are running to a timetable so maintain your speed up the Cajon Pass.
• Snap Happy - Drive Challenger No 3985 on the southern half of the Cajon Pass. Due to massive interest this outing has generated there have been three brief scheduled photographic stops worked into the timetable.

• Free Roam: Barstow Yard - To drive in free roam, click on an engine and explore the route.
