Über dieses Spiel

What Ancients Begat is a complete (~15 hour) game of family generations surviving the rise of western civilization. Survival is the ultimate goal. The sub-goals, you choose, build their story.

Experience an abstract telling of the lives of our earliest recorded ancestors. Part board game, part machine, part nod to computer games of yore, it begins with a simple mechanic. Spend tokens to traverse the wheel of life. Earn tokens by tempting the jaws of death. Then, like layers upon a pearl, game play expands, introducing fresh tactics and strategies which, turn by turn, drive a sophisticated, emergent narrative. How you play defines the lives of one family's generations through the changing ages.

An enormous tableau of ancient western culture awaits your exploration:

  • Core Mechanic - Back and forth tactics, across four social boundaries, to win legend points.
  • Family Strategy - Romance. Raise children. Rite of Passage.
  • Family Drama - Tales in the life. Sibling rivalry. Failed branches. Graveyard of ancestry.
  • Grand Legends - Earned over generations, they strengthen your family: Discoveries and Invention. Social Advancement. Heroics.
  • Ruling Games - City Administration. Warring Kingdoms. Imperial Senate.
  • The Challenges of an Age - Special for each social level. Survive and overcome, to enter a new age.

The best game i have played in this kind of genre. Challenging and fun in a satisfying style. Enjoyable sound, and graphics design. Challenging but fun gameplay, my only crevat is that there are no sequels.

Surprisingly addictive game where you play a family over multiple generations, trying to stay ahead of death, disease and poverty in the era where civilizations spread out of the Fertile Crescent.

The graphics are in a simple but satisfying "animated boardgame" style, and key "events" in the lives of family members are played out as a series of choices in a narrative. Sometimes the "right" choice leads to bad outcomes, and the "wrong" choice to social advancement ---- just like real life!

The story that builds really puts modern life in perspective. Marrying for love definitely took a backseat to marrying for the resources your prospective partner brought to the relationship in those times. Similarly, literally everything revolved around sacrificing as much as possible for your children; every inch of advancement you could buy them was worth it. And not just one child, but making sure you had a "backup" in case of misfortune. But don't spread yourself too thin! Sure children are free labor, but they are also mouths to feed...

I got around 20 hours of fun with this -- so for me it was definitely worth the Steam Sale price I paid for it.

It's a very addictive game for what seems like simple game play. You need to educate the offspring and make sure they all get the same treatment or you suffer the consequences which when you're just barely staying afloat can be make or break. But, if the siblings get along it can be wonderful.
I found myself often saying I'll just finish this generation before I quit ... and 6 generations later I was still saying 'just this generation'.

I really liked this game, it was shocking how quickly it became addictive putting coins in a slot. I really liked all the choices you had during the lifetimes of the characters and the outcomes. The game always felt fresh not repetitive while progressing even when doing the same task multiple times. I just wish that there was a future for this game, I would to play out the remaining six steps. My family now sits in limbo waiting for a life they’ll never have. I wouldn’t have bought it, if I had known it was only the first part and there wasn’t going to be anymore parts. Pitty, because it really was a good game.

I admit that I didn't play the game for a long time. The concept is ok. It's casual. You put coins to your family members to either move them to collect beads or make them grow (and love). You have choices to make and have to make your way through against rivalries (other families). I find the pacing of the game slow and repetitive. Well, at the beginning, you're kind of really not sure of what you're doing.

Incredibly unique and well balanced board game that tells a story that follows your lineage through the generations. It's incredibly elegant and well tuned, and I found myself easily losing track of time. I really wish there were more games like this one, as it's a welcome departure from the plethora of fast paced arcade games on the market.

Recommended for people who love storytelling and boardgames.

Since I like boardgames, I thought I was going to like this game, but in the end I was dissapointed. It just lacked immersion, and the mechanics can become reptitive that it ends up becoming a grinding slog.

In this game, you try to advance through the board , which in this game is a wheel, using tokens, which you produce by moving backwards, If the wheel ends up dragging you to the wrong end, your character gets eaten by crocodiles.

No, you dont lose the game when that happens, instead you continue with a child-heir of yours, or if you don't have any, a past sibling.

The problem here is that, it is too much luck based, you don't know what tokens you are going to get, and there is a real good chance that you are going to run out of tokens, which means bye-bye and say hello to the crocodiles. This happens especially if you don't get married early, and the matter of you getting married is again dependent on chance and luck.

And if you don't have children, as I have stated above, you continue with a past sibling of yours, which means you will go back a generation. In my case, I was already in the iron age, but went back to the bronze age.

This made me stop playing, As it really felt that the game was never going to end.

Also, the writing which is supposed to bring depth, story, and immersion is weak and uninspired, and most of the time lacking in context - I'm a doctor? no? then a potter? not really, so what am I really? - Such basic questions, the game often fails to answer.

If you like games like checkers or maybe go. You might like this game, but for those seeking for an immersive saga through the ages, like me, we are better off looking someplace else.

I really wanted to like this game, but ultimately it is extremely random. There is very little strategy and the game always punishes behavior outside of a narrow path of best options. You'll spend some real time banging on this trying to figure it out. There is an illusion of depth with none really there.

Very repetitive. Too random. People deciding not to marry repeatedly can set you back generations. Ruling games are entertaining though.

This game starts off mildly entertaining but only it took me 15 minutes to start finding it boring and repetitive. They made a good effort at storytelling but the actual gameplay was too dull for me to care much about the plot.

You put tokens into slots to move your characters across a board, raising children along the way (by putting tokens into slots) to repeat the process with. I suppose if you enjoy putting tokens into slots this is the game for you.

I got it in a bundle and will probably play it now and then when I need to kill a very short amount of time, but it's not worth even half of the regular price.

It plays a bit slow for my tastes and has a great deal of complexity that doesn't always seem well explained.

While the concept alone is not too bad, it's not enough to justify the length of a single game. It drags on way, WAAAAAAAY too long, quickly becoming extremely repetetive - even if you're able to progress without any problems. And if anything sets you back, it gets even worse.

▲ Worum geht's?

General disclaimer for my reviews, don't trust my played time in a game to mean anything. I'm lazy and will leave them running 24/7 when I get on a kick with them. That said...

In the end, not worth $20.

It's the weird love child of a board game, a strategy game, and the Sims. The uniqueness of the game is interesting, but there's just not enough meat there to drop that much money when I can get so much more for that. Yes, I am miserly. Why do you ask?

I enjoyed my time with it. If you get a string of bad luck it can be tedious. Not a ton of replay value. If you ever see it for $5 or less, and you like quirky, think about it.

Very interesting and original board game...

Pros:
+ Original concept
+ Clever mechanics
+ Many things to discover
+ Fun

Cons:
- Solving "wtf is that?" is a somewhat long process
- Price tag is absurd

Final verdict:
An original, fun board game to kill some time (*cough* if you grab it on discount *cough*).

They've done a pretty OK job at showing how much life must have sucked back then, but if it were really representative, upward social mobility would be a lot harder. This is the kind of game where you're almost expected to fail. The kind of game that'll look at you weirdly if you win and ask "How did you get here? All of your kids were supposed to be eaten by cows somehow. Did you hack?" And you'd say "Yep." Like playing monopoly during the great depression, or an MMORPG without any NPCs or quests, you're trying to create a family dynasty in a world where noone seems to know what is happening or what they're doing. Good luck.

4/5 would recommend to boring people.

I've never seen anything like this game. It has a very unique concept and an engaging atmosphere, which will captivate you or maybe leave you indifferent. I really liked it but not everyone will.

However - as other have said it, the price (20$/Eur) is absolutely insane. Wait for a huge discount or get it in a bundle.
It's absolutely worth experiencing, but not at full price. There's also a demo on the developer's website, mousechief dot com, so you can check if the concept works for you.

IF: you enjoy some random chaos with your mechanical board game that plays out over hours trying to advance the status of a single bloodline in ye' old ancient times.

But it is a risk calculator & counting puzzle game. As with any independent game, watch a Lets Play and do some research so you know what you're buying.

This is such a lovely little game!

I've never really played anything like it.... "Stargate" for the first GameBoy comes to mind ;)

This game is extremely simple and very clever at the same time.

The Look of an old coin-fueled cought my attention, but what I really won me over for this game
was the generated story. It may be only fresh and interesting in the first few playthroughs (sadly it gets repetitive pretty fast), but though its just pieces of text popping up one after another, it still made me feel and even care for these characters I was playing.

Each death by sickness really meant something. Sometiimes even letting the parents perish away for the children to have a better start in the next generation.

This game may not be for anybody and I may never have played it if I hadn't got it in a bundle, but if you like the trailer you should maybe give it a try too ;)
