It has been two years since the end of the second Gemini war, the situation in the wartorn system is further from resolution than ever.
The collection of freedom fighters named Gemini League is now reduced to a small group, with no power or influence, after losing their leaders. The Empire meanwhile, has used the re-opened Starpoint to occupy the once renegade Gemini sector - and beyond.



A multitude of Imperial warship fleets and mammoth motherships have crushed every trace of opposition. The situation was looking bleak, when they suddenly halted their armada and re-shifted their focus on fortifying Starpoint with staggering numbers. This is a re-review implementing suggestions in comments:

It's needlessly complicated, the z-axis doesn't add to the game compared to the original, and it generally isn't fun.

Let me elaborate:
-Although the single continuous world is an improvement, getting around said world is tedius and time consuming unless you happen to be near one of the shortcuts and that shortcut happens to end up where you need to be.
-The combat is underwhelming. Basically, you tell the ship it can fire, it fires, you get shot at which is absorbed by shields, who wins is basically which of the parties has better shields and guns. Really the only thing you change is your facing so different shields absorb their attacks. Doesn't sound exciting, does it?
-The user interface is complicated and it really has no reason to be. I came back to play Titans and I was constantly pushing the wrong buttons. The controls are not intuitive.
-The story (including the DLCs) is uninspired, boring, completely forgettable, short, and ends before it feels like it should.

There's only two things I enjoyed in this game:
1) Exploring the galaxy.
2) The SG1 campaign imported into SG2. This fixed a lot of the gripes I had about the original (especially having to grind to proceed) which is why I liked it.
These things don't offset all of the other problems with the game though so still not recommended.

As for why there are so many hours registered, it's most likely a product of running in the taskbar. I repeatedly got bored of the game, alt+tabbed out, browsed the internet, and resumed later. It does not reflect what it actuallly took to finish the game (as is the case with a lot of games).

Grand Space Sim that puts you in command of a space ship to fly, shoot, trade, save the universe, blow up stuff, do the laundry, collect files hidden in floating junk, level up, hire recruits, upgrade your ship, and do pretty much anything else your starfaring heart desires. The game looks nice, plays well (albeit at a slowish pace), has enjoyably 'space-y' ambient music, and offers a ton of different content that may not always 'wow', but will definitely satisfy.

OK so if your a grumpy old git gamer like me who played feelancer on its release day you will know that this game is a blatent attempt to COPY FREELANCER without the massive budget and holiwood actors used to make the oridginal. The game uses places ship names faction names directly from freelancer without even trying in any way to hide that fact. Frankly im amazed Microsoft havent sued them into bancruptsy by now lol. But heres the mindblowing TRUTH this game is infinately better than eve better than star citizen which so far is a catastrophe and X rebirth a game for which egosoft should be stripped naked in public and pelted with rotten eggs. If you want a goode game similar to no sorry directly plageriseing Freelancer this is the game you want its a lot more fun than Elite dangerous too so BUY IT NOW before it gets banned. 8 out of 10

The apeal of this game is very specific. If you are looking for a thrilling story filled action packed game, this is NOT it! If you are looking for an open sandbox to just play in space, this is a great game. You can mine asteroids, take down pirates, explore space anomalies, and overall just roam the galaxy. There is a story option, I have not tried it, I wanted the sandbox. Controls are explained, there is no tutorial, you're just dropped in space and free to go and figure things out. Finding an asteroid belt of rare minerals sound fun? This is your game. Sound dull? Move along.

Up front: Not deep enough or fun enough to warrant a $35 entry fee. Definitely worth it for $10.

Pros:
+Artwork. Ships and backdrops are pleasant enough to look at and cruising through space in your ride of choice is nice.
+Simple, easy to use interface and controls. Love the interface.
+Straightforward missions
+Stable and nicely refined. Have yet to run in to a "broken quest" or a significant bug of any kind.
+Decent enough sized sandbox system to play in. It takes 15 minutes to fly across Gemini even with the fastest ship.
+Game adjusts difficulty rather well as you progress to bigger ships.
+Soundtrack is a definite plus that matches the mood of the task at hand.
+Lots of factions. No, they don't really fight all that differently but...they are labeled differently.
+Faction loyalty. It is simple to see who you are friends with and who you should avoid. System is easy and intuitive.
+Decent variety of ships, loots and weapons keeps things interesting.
+Fighters and bombers can be launched from you ship.
+Perk system. As you gain rank you can shape your fighting style and abilities. Easy and effective without being OP.
+Steam workshop enabled. I find looking at the hind end of an Intrepid Class is nicer than the stock ships.

Cons:
-Game progression can be very grindy at times.
-Uncompelling campaign became unbearable because of horrid voice acting. I began playing free-roam instead.
-Ships all fly and feel the same. A battleship handles just as well as a frigate, it just has more weapons, shields etc. :(
-Unable to target specific enemy ship systems.
-Sensor range is pitifully low. You'll always see things before your sensors do.
-Combat feels shallow a good portion of the time. Tactics rarely decide outcome, usually ship stats are it.
-Combat AI is downright stupid at times. As a level 18 I destroyed a level 70 pirate because they kept chasing me. My one pea-shooter gun could hit them from 800 out, their guns could only reach 550. As they chased me I eventually wore down their forward shield and nearly destroyed them before they turned and ran. At that point I ran them down, overtook and finished by shooting through their non-existent forward shield.
-Controls are simple, but can be awkward at times. No target padlock option. (Really?)
-3rd person views only. You will never be "in your ship"and that hurts immersion.
-Game does not track ships destroyed, troops lost, total money accrued etc. Nice touches that are easy to make.
-Small variety in mission types. Scan something, shoot something, ferry something. That's pretty much it.
-No ability to build up a true fleet, can just hire a couple mercs.
-No feel of actually influencing events in the game world.
-When you dock at a station or planet, all interactions are handled through a simple splash screen.

Summary:
Starpoint Gemini 2 is a nice little space romp for casual/arcade crowds. I would personally prefer options available to transform this basic game experience into something a little more hardcore. Replayability is hurt by lack of simulation options, inability to shape conflict and shallow combat mechanics. Less than 20 hours in I have a dreadnought class warship, have maxed out alliances with half the factions and explored roughly 60% of the systems in the game. I do not feel as though I will make any substantial new discoveries at this point, but may come back if I find myself in the mood for mindless point and click with a spaceship involved. Score: 7.5

I've been playing this game about a week, and got up to level 10.
It's not a bad little game, but don't expect too much, and don't pay more than $10 for it. The learning curve isn't too bad, but the controls aren't intuitive, so expect to stare at the screen dumbfounded a few times at the start.
The tutorial is not much. It's all reading with no in-game walkthrough. On the other hand, after only a few tries you should have the contols down pat.
The storyline is so Byzantine that you could never keep up with it, and their are no cut scenes, just cardboard cutouts in the top left of your screen trying to keep you abreast of the storyline. It's almost as if they made the game first, and then inserted a story. Also the voice acting is subpar, but to tell you the truth, there are very few games where I cared about the story (Homeworld, Starcraft, and that's about it).
The visuals are actually superb. Just flying through space and looking at the colorful planets and nebula is fun in itself. The combat is good, though there really is no dogfighting. If you are in combat and you have any kind of acceleration, you'll be miles away after only a few shots, and then you have to turn around and go back. Basically it's like the British and French during the Napolianic wars. You just stand there and hammer away at each other until one of you is dead.
Upgrading ships is practically unkown in the beginning of the game. When the next ship costs 10 million and you only have 250,000 and the missions give you a paltry 10,000, you aren't upgrading fast.
That too goes for the ship modules. Upgrading weapons, shields, propulsion, and the like is the same as upgrading ships; expensive.
The thing that I don't understand is that Freelancer was put out in 2003, and yet this game isn't a quantum leap in game play. In fact it's actually a step backward. It's like we didn't have 13 years of game development.

But, like I said, it's not a bad game, just don't expect too much and don't spend too much money on it.

Great sound track, cool space graphics. Make sure you get the version that comes with the game soundtrack. Get this game on Steam sale. $4.99 = worth it.

So here's the kind of stuff that happens in SG2:

I'm flying in my cloaked Freya-class stealth carrier towards a small fleet of enemy vessels. I drop to cruising speed (drawing power from engines to weapons + shields) in the middle of the ship cluster and release 1 wing each of fighters + bombers, which wreak havoc in their ranks. I lock a grappling beam on the flagship, drop out of cloak and set weapons free. Turning the ship, I shoot missile salvos from my port, bow and starboard ports, crushing the flaship's shields and bringing hull integrity to critical levels. I then use transporters to launch a boarding party, which subdues the vessel's defenders in less than a minute. All the while my guns, bombers and fighters make short work of the supporting vessels and I leave with a prize ship worth millions of credits.

That's the game in a nutshell. It's really, really, really cool and accomplishes what few games like it can... but has giant glaring holes in it. I recommend the game if you get it on sale or if you don't mind taking the good with the bad. I'm not one of those weird people who likes s***ty games and *I* played it for 55 hours and counting.

Here are my gripes:
* Capturing ships? Yeah, pretty much the only sensible thing to do towards the end game for cash.

* The system is kind of arcane. Most of it becomes intuitive after you get a chance to tweak it (for instance, I've set my mouse page Back/Forward buttons to lock on the nearest target and mark it for fighters/fleet vessels). However... it wasn't until like 40-50 hours into the game that I realized that "Power-To-Engines" didn't actually put full power to engines and you boosted speed significantly if you used the power allocation tab to set Engines to 100% while in PTE mode.

* AI is miserably weak. Boarding actions? They don't do 'em. Hacking your ship? Yeah they don't do that either. Grappling? Hahaha no. They seem to just go towards the nearest enemy and shoot. The most complicated thing they do is use items that drop mines or kill your fighters or knock out your engines. It leads to ridiculous situations like my Freya ship with 110 troopers destroying 6 Equinox-class carriers with 130 troopers each... when just two of them could almost guarantee taking my ship by boarding. Same goes when I'm wrecking a freighter with a small corvette-class fighter/bomber... and it could easily knock me out of commission by grappling me and pounding me to dust.

* The dialogue killed my parents. Seriously... this stuff comes across as written by a middle-schooler, translated to Russian-and-back, and voiced in the dumbest, least engaging way possible. Worst of all.. it's unskippable! There's a command for "skip dialogue" but it DOESN'T WORK.

I know I only have a few hours in on this game, but I already love it. It reminds me of the old game Freelancer in all the good ways, with a smattering of Darkstar One thrown in for good measure. It also has many features all its own, but if you liked either of those games, I think you will like this one. I already know that I will be coming back to play this game for long into the future.

Had to write a review because I looked and saw that this game was getting really negative reviews. I think that most of these come from skewed expectations.

The game, is fantastic, but not for everyone. If you are expecting an Eve style game: turn around and walk away. If you are expecting an Elite: Dangerous style of game: turn around and walk the other way. If you are expecting a Freelancer style game: then come right on in and enjoy the ride. I'm a pretty big space junkie, even bleeding into the mobile area *gag reflex*, I know. But when I'm not playing some space game on my PC, I'm playing Galaxy on Fire on my phone. As far as the game goes don't expect much "dogfight" type flying and combat. While there is a small amount of that in the early game, very quickly it turns into a game with battleships and cruisers, where the tactic is to broadside your adversary rather than run at him head on. Being that it is in space, that type of combat is amplified tenfold. Think of a great conflict with you in your dreadnought vs 3 other battleships. You launch fighters and prepare for combat. Being that this is space one of the battleships flys above you, so you rotate your ship so that your port side is now facing the underside of his ship, leaving you with a perfect angle of attack. If that doesn't sound awesome to you than this game is now for you.

This game does not reinvent the genre but I would have to say that it has the most friendly learning curve and decent story/graphics to get someone who has difficulty getting into games like X series and Eve a fair shot at playing the campaign. A little bit of a grind in the beginning but if you stick with it you will be gaining levels and access to bigger ships before you know it.

Leveled a bit with sidemissions, traded some things, started to steal ships, got rich af, bought a bigger stealth ship to steal bigger ships, sold bigger ships, bought licenses, bought even more licenses, bought ALL of them, found a station that sells me my best weapons for less than they buy them, stayed on that station for several months making money(haha, nice joke! ingametime doesnt pass on stations and planets), got out with an enourmously huge monster ship that can steal even bigger ships, got to the other side of the universe and bought the absolutly best ship to steal ships, kept all expensive weapons i found, i mean stole, went back to the station with the same full trading skills and trading skill mercenaries i found the stations trading logic with (yes, i wrote down on a sheet of paper where i can find them, just like with any of the ship slot upgrades), made 100bio in like half an hour of trading the same weapons over and over again. bought the universe.

I legitimately broke the game.

I even sold ships that i will never use anyway just for the overview. kept the cool ones ofc.
At this point Im just hunting down Heroes, stopped the story at like mission 14 because overly upgraded and overly well equipped me and 2 uber mercenary ships wreck just anything, no matter the title.
didnt get the artifact looting stuff, either its bugged for me, or i just didnt try to switch my reputation to the negative to be able to loot them. Who nose.
