Hotfix Patch 1.4.2f9 Now Live

Darkest greetings Underlord,

We’ve just launched a quick hotfix for a number of serious gameplay bugs that appeared in a recent patch. You might not have witnessed these issues if your games did not run over a certain time span but they could prove derailing if you did.

Please read below for the full patch notes. If you encounter any further issues please log bug reports to us directly via user echo. All the issues fixed today are a result of public reports, so please don’t underestimate the value of your report! :)

Bug Fixes
  • Corrected a few typos in various tooltips
  • Some corrections to pathfinding AI particularly for units becoming unable to find their way back to locations in a players dungeon. Leading to an AI loop where they proceed to ignore any further needs.
  • Fixed an issue on Level 6 where units rescued from prisons would not “wake up” and behave normally
  • Slaughterpen Pigs should no longer become uneatable over the course of a long game session, causing mass hunger through your dungeon
  • Energy injectors have been fitted to unit beds, preventing them from falling asleep forever in certain conditions
  • Fixed the tavern tooltip occasionally displaying 101% filled

The Dungeon Keeper has come....er, I mean the Underlord!

Back in the day, I was a HUGGGEE fan of Dungeon Keeper, that game was my jam! When Dungeon Keeper 2 came out, I of course got it, played it, beat it (many times) and then after enjoying the end cinematic, I patiently yet excitedly waited for DK3!

Well, long story short and of which I'm sure a few of you can relate, DK3 never came and turns out Bullfrog closed up shop and with each passing year, DK 3 became a pipe dream, but one I longed for.

Many years later, I was on Steam and I saw War for the Overworld pop up and I did some reading about it. It was meant to be a spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper and even received endorsement from Peter Molyneux himself and they had even secured the original narrator from the DK series!

Now, I had also played the game Dungeons by Kalypso, which was also created and meant to be a spritual successor to DK, but honestly that game sucked and I was massively let down, so when I saw this I was excited, but cautiously skeptical! I ended up purchasing it during early-access and at the time, I liked it a bit, but it wasn't so great, yet I could acknowlege that I knew it was only Early-Access and just to wait until release to render final judgment. I waited. I waited a very long time and it was starting to get to the point that I thought the devs had abandoned the game or something happened, I dunno, ya know those things happen with some early-access games and I was scared it was happening to this one.

Anyways, I ended up ignoring it for some time, even after it officially released, but once I finally started playing it.......these developers.....they brought joy to the child in my soul, they did it, they nailed this on the head! THIS is what Dungeon Keeper is, they successfully harnessed the look, the feel, gameplay of Dungeon Keeper but at the same time, making the game feel unique enough to be something else entirely!

I could not be any more satisfied and happy with this game, I waited many, many years for Dungeon Keeper 3 and while this game has a different title, it's more than good enough for me!

10 out of 10, easily!

To reduce War for the Overworld as a simple intellectual property reskin or modernised rehash of dungeon keeper 2 would completely undermine just how much further this game goes. The core mechanics, style and thematic approach undoubtedly are outright DK (imitation is flattery after all) even going to go so far as to use the same narrator, but a new gamut of bestiary, rooms, traps and mechanics are not only well thought out, but offer an invaluable greater range of depth to strategic gameplay and variety in playstyle. Most importantly though this game is just downright fun to play, whether you are playing casually, or meticulously masterminding your next misdeed the game just exudes a character that positively rubs off on you.

A reboot of Dungeon Keeper complete with demonic sarcastic commentator. Loses a few of the more balooney and fun ideas of the original (all evil minions dancing "Disco Inferno" when someone hits the jackpot in the casino was an epic) but introduces new features. New rooms with new functionality to discover, and some great new ways to control the behavior of your minions to avoid some of the worst shortcomings of DK 1 & 2.
I loved both the originals, and highly recommend this one too.

It definitely has load of nostalgia for Dungeon Keeper seeing as it is the spiritual successor. You're back to lord over your evil domain with the wonderful Richard Ridings at your side. He'll guide you in the conquest of the titular Overworld as you face the forces of the empire and traitorous other Underlords that get in the way of your evil schemes.

The Good: You'll carve out your dungeon from the cavernous earth and build various rooms to attract minions through gateways to do nefarious functions. Libraries attract warlocks, barracks attract gnarlings and so on. Some extra features for better micromanagement of your dungeon have been added like flagging certain important minions to ignore war banner calls as well as control groups to better focus your evil armies. Still, a well stocked dungeon will mostly take care of itself, the imps marvelous in their task of stomping out any lumps. New tabs and functions have also been added allowing you to gain alternate functions from dungeon keeper utility (i.e. restore earth to pretty up your dungeon or plug holes), various potions you can brew to various affects, and sanctuaries to charge diabolical rituals. There are also Titans, super units to help defend or destroy encroaching enemies, allowing to spearhead bastions your rabble cannot otherwise reliably take on.

The Bad: There is a sort of tech tree (The Veins of Evil) added and while I can see its function in multiplayer, its placement in singleplayer was rather odd. You unlock points (Sins) at your library, but often I'd have more points than I could spend and the new things I'd unlock could feel haphazard at times. While the dungeon takes care of itself, it still has the same problems as previous Dungeon Keeper games that things might actually be screwed up and you'll have no notion till it's far too late. Or conflicted AI--though usually behaved when a war banner was down. Minions are back to being instantly dropped without worry about fall recovery (ala DK1) but when fighting enemy Underlords could exhibit the problem of a fleshy combatant vs an AI on how well they can micro. Still, I only needed to retry a few missions a second time and the overall campaign clocks in at around 13 hours. Unfortunately it seems a bit short and that they should have spaced it out more or had more interesting side missions. Also the ending is kind of lackluster.

Overall I'd give it an 8/10. A must have for fans of the old Dungeon Keeper but still a number of flaws remain.

5/10 average game but it lacks in key areas such as defensive structures and creature control areas. Would recommend "Dungeons 2" (not to be confused with "Dungeon keeper 2") before playing this game

Pro - Its Dungeon Keeper all over again!

Con - Its Dungeon Keeper all over again...

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the original Dungeon Keepers. Love the humour, the creatures and minions. And when I learned about this game, I was thrilled! A new dungeon keeper?! Awesome! And when I first started playing, I was happy as the nostalgia washed over me...

The thing is, this isn't 'Dungeon Keeper 3.0'. Its not even 'Dungeon Keeper 2.5'. Its 'What if we remade Dungeon Keeper 2 with new graphics and new names/creatures so we don't get sued'.
This, in itself, IS NOT A BAD THING. But if you played DK2 to death, as i did, then you will notice that it tries to be more of the same, and it doesn't always succeed.

I do heartily recommend this game, as it was fun whilst it kept my attention (almost 9 hours). But it did only feel like I was only adding to the hundreds of hours I'd already put into DK1 + 2 - and as such, It was just more of the same for me. At the end of the day, it replicates the originals so well/much, that I may as well be playing the originals - something I haven't had the urge to do in 15 years. Yes, there are new mechanics added, but its like saying that adding a 'go faster stripe' to a car changes the car; It doesn't.

- If you've never played the originals, and think you might enjoy this, give it a go.
- If you tried playing the originals, enjoyed it but the outdated graphics ruined it for ya, give this a go.
- If you played the originals when they came out, loved them, and want more, give this a go.
- If, however, you played the originals and want something MORE than an almost 20 year old game with a fresh lick of paint (however awesome it was) - might wanna give this a miss.

TL;DR - One of your minions wants to get off Mr. Bones Wild Ride.

10/10 would not get on.

I could not recommend this game in its' previous release state. However, now I actually can. After its' 1.1 patch, the majority of what this game was missing in its release verison has finally been added.

War for the Overworld, as a game, is...dungeon keeper 3. There really isn't another way to describe it. If Peter Molyneaux and the Bullfrog team were still around today, I feel the game we would have gotten would not be too far off from this. Are there flaws in this game? Obviously. Every game has flaws. But as far as managing to capture the feel of dungeon keeper and make an all-round fun game, this kickstarter title succeeds where higher-budget games such as the Dungeons series failed. With EA making no attempt to actually capitalize on a once great series, and in fact ruining it for a new generation by slamming a free to play business model that shames the series GREATLY (even paying off reviewers EA style couldn't keep dungeon keeper mobile's critic rating up high enough to appear worthwhile), it's nice to see we still have fans of the old game out there who want to see it made new.

Am I rambling a lot on what Dungeon Keeper was? Yep. For those of you unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, this is a game where you manage a...well, dungeon, from the perspective of an evil overlord. Throughout the campaign, rather than being the hero who explores and brings death to dungeons, you build the dungeon and fight back against the good. You can accomplish this through the use of powerful minions as well as various traps and such that your enemy won't (hopefully) see coming, and of course a little bit of god power for good measure (*zap*). You have minimal control over your minions, so this isn't exactly an RTS and it sure as all hell is NOT an actions per minute game - in fact, trying to go all MLG clicky-clicky on this game would likely just hinder you more than anything else. Your control consists of picking minions or imps up and throwing them where you want them to be and...well, hoping they do what you want. You can lay down rally flags to get everyone's attention to a specific spot, but if you try to keep them out for too long you'll end up with a bunch of unhappy minions telling the flag to ♥♥♥♥ off and going to bed. You also have to keep them regularly paid with gold, which handily is also the resource you use for literally everything else. Fail in this aspect, and minions will just pack up shop and leave to go elsewhere.

Map design is what made Dungeon Keeper and, as a result, War for the Overworld, extremely unique. There is not a lot of map when you actually get in - it's just a bunch of dirt, some impenetrable rocks, water, lava, maybe a chasm, and gold in the dirt. Oh, and your central dungeon core. Don't lose that...seriously. You have to dig out your own map, tile by tile, and lay down rooms in areas to correspond with what you want and your minions' needs - a lair to sleep, a slaughterpen to eat, a tavern to provide money for you and make people happy, a barracks to train, etc...and of course the arena where you can have minions fight to the death for no reason outside of entertainment. It appears to entertain the other minions to watch their brethren get slaughtered too...and of course, the other benefit to building your own map is deciding when and where to dig to place down traps and such, and if you happen to sight enemy traps...you can dig around them.

By now you may think this is a twisted, evil game where everything is gruesome and terrible. And you'd be right and wrong. While you do play as evil, this is a very lighthearted game as the original dungeon keeper games were. Featuring awesome voice narration from the original DK's narrator, you'll find yourself often having a lot of fun just from hearing some of the things minions have to say, or the random (but amusing) pop culture references made by the narrator.

And when you're done with the campaign, you'll find it is still very fun to play in skirmish or multiplayer modes. In these modes, you and up to 3 other AI or players will duke it out, each building their own dungeons and attacking one another for no reason other than ♥♥♥♥ you, my ground. Unlike the original dungeon keeper, War for the Overworld actually does a decent job of working properly in skirmish and multiplayer. While it was possible in Dungeon Keeper 2 to do the same, the game just didn't quite feel the same as it was very campaign-oriented. WFTO implements some new systems that help the game to work properly in either situation. There is also sandbox mode where you just build in a big, empty map free of gold or mana issues, and survival mode which is...honestly still being worked on and I have very little experience in it, but it's self explanatory.

Overall, this game is easily worth your $30. Hell, go the extra $10 and get the $40 version just for the soundtrack if nothing else - the soundtrack is pure evil and outstanding and it fits PERFECTLY with a game of this theme. This kickstarted game more than deserves your money (after a rocky launch).

When the game first came to steam back in may 2013, there were only 3 different rooms to build, the ui buttons didn't work, mouse-wheel scrolling was broken, the ai was terrible, and there were no sound effects.

As of early December, there are 8 rooms, the ui is fixed, scrolling feels normal, the ai is better, and the sound effects are great. -Not to mention they went back and remodeled a character because of negitive fan feedback. It's good to see this game taking shape.

As for the gameplay? Well, Peter Molyneux declared it the spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper franchise, so there's that. It's a basic sandbox dungeon stratagy game that requires you to build an underground lair, collect resources, train minions, and defeat your enemy. Along the way you can build traps and defenses for your dungeon, cast various spells, and spend xp on 3 different skill trees.

EA killed Bullfrog 12 years ago, so go spend $20 and pick up a copy you cheap ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s.

Game itself is VERY fun. Dungeon Keeper 2.0(less of a dark theme though, voice overs are good but a bit goofball humor)

Initially there were alot of bugs/glitches but the developers have been releasing patches EVERY 2-3 hours, amazing, 7-8 patches so far

+++++++++++++ support these guys, bug fixing at midnight on a saturday and releasing a patch. This is how game companies should behave (SUPPORT YOUR PRODUCTS!!!!!)

-EDIT- This review was made when the game was freshly released, and from what I've gathered it seems that a lot of the issues I wrote about has been fixed. For now, just disregard this review, I will probably go back and try the game again in the near future when I find the time.

Wait, for the love of god, wait with picking this game up.

I have had my eyes on this game for a long time, since I loved the original DK games, and this one seems like it was going to stay true to the formula. I did, however, want to wait until it was finished, as to not get my view on it damaged by playing an unfinished product. I was glad when I saw it on the recently released list, because I had been waiting for it for a while.

However, this game is very clearly not finished. There are placeholder texts everywhere, there's missing animations, and the UI feels clunky, sluggish, and at times unresponsive.
The foundations for a good game are clearly here, but it should not have been pushed out of the door this early. It's very much still an Early Access game.

So please, if you want to have a good experience with this game, wait until the game is actually, properly, finished. I cannot recommend it in its current state.

This is a great game the multiplayer is by far better that that of dungeon keeper ever was, but i think if they focused a little more on the micro managment a little more this game would be perfict

Throwback to dungeon keeper! Modern update to the original masterpiece! The base game feels much like dk2, I hope much more will be added with expansions and workshop content!

Pretty impressive effort from such a small studio. Works well and offers a fairly humourous and robust experience. Really enjoying it so far, though a couple of usability elements are missing, such as coming out of a menu with Esc.

This game is cute, charming, and polished.

Why the thumbs down, then, you ask?

The answer is that the game, while cute, lacks strategic depth and is not worth the $30 price point. The rooms are unbalanced and there is a clear setup to spam in order to win every game. The maps and scenarios are not varied enough to feel like a new game each time. It leverages upon nostalgia for dungeon builders past and does not substantially innovate. There are some QoL issues: for example, feedback loops are tenuous and it is not always clear why a dungeon inhabitant is unhappy.

I think that this game may become worth it at the $15-20 price point, since it was quirky and kept me entertained for a little while. If you're into this sort of game, I would recommend waiting for a sale.

i really loved this game but i found out from that not good thing to ask question in forms some people like to troll and when you called them out on their bs you get abuse from non public profile calling themselves Q&A support game is coummunity not so helped game seems dead

When i first played through it in late early access (Yeah, it's a conundrum) - I found it to be a bit messy, you basically spammed the healing button and "won". But now that i played "Heart Of Gold" it is even BETTER than the original Dungeon keeper games and i can't wait for more expansions so i can throw well earned cash on these guys!

This game is much better than Dungeon Keeper... it's much more challenging (and obviously up to date!) their are many spells, buildings and units available and I imagine more will continue to come as the game expands. It can be a little... aggrivating if you act too slowly or you don't prepare your self.

The maps are huge, the missions are fun (and funny), the minions are cool, the enemy are you're typical uptight "nobles" and the story is acceptable (with plot twists!).

I enjoyed my time with this game, and I suggest it to others who enjoy dungeon-building games that involve minion welfare (if you can call it that...) and basic strategy.

Right so, 13h into the game and this is included in a small follow up of the game since it was beta. Now the game is fully released and is still getting updates with content and all. +1 for the devs. Must be one of 5 games that I decided to preorder in last 5 years and only one I havent missed by preordering, and now to explain why:

I am (was) and avid Dungeon Keeper 2 player. It was a game that I was returing to years after years even after I've tried a lot of games that tried (Dungeons which were, Overlord which was fun after all). Humor of DK2, animations all played into the game including the masterfully done voice acting of dungeon advisor. THESE GUYS MANAGED TO GET THE SAME GUY TO VOICE DUNGEON ADVISOR IN WftO!!!! When I bought (preordered) the game there was no advisor to begin with, you can imagine my inner schoolgirl screams when I heard his voice along with all the comments that gave the game that "extra" I wanted in it.

Unfortunatelly my job (where I travel a lot) prevents me of playing what I want when I want, but this will be the game I will return to for singleplayer if not multi. Game has a lot features, it's easy to learn if you ever played DK or DK2, some mechanics are different but all the new mechanics (like Aspects of Evil) are a positive and nice tactical change in the game that affects MP games (think of C&C Generals by picking general, but you can unlock all in due time, but that takes, well, time). Characters look great, visuals are superb, traps, imps, slaps, this game has all!

it gets solid 9.5/10. For 10/10 it misses casino and Disco Inferno when monster wins jackpot!
