I must say I was quite suprised by this game.
I'm not sure if the suprise was completely positive.

I used to play the second part, world of illusion, a lot with a friend on Sega. Naturally, I was excited to play this one (which I never had before.)
However, after only two hours of this game it's almost ended and this is my biggest dissapointment.
The graphics are awesome, and I think the game is targeting the younger audience (It can be slightly challenging sometimes though.) but to pay 12 euro's for this? I don't know..

My advice:
Fun to play, but wait till it has 75% off. This makes it worth it's value.

7/10

The Good:
Based on a classic
Solid platformer gameplay
Cute story
Lots of collectibles

The Bad:
If you don't like Disney you won't like this
Do not expect this as a simple remake
Mostly quite easy besides getting all collectibles and a couple boss fights

Castle of Illusion was one of my favorite Genesis games, so I was very interested in this. It was a pleasant surprise to find that although this is not really a remake at all, but instead was a whole new game based on the themes, enemy movements, and basic premises of the original. Hence we have a classic based on a classic.

The game will move from 2D to 3D seamlessly, and without any controllable camera, so if you don't like this (like on Yoshi's story to some degree), you might dislike the game. I found it to work well combined with charming graphics and fun but simple platforming. The boss fights are interesting and unique, and the final boss fight is a satisfying challenge. Throw unlockable costumes to the mix for collecting hidden secrets and you've got a great game.

This is a great game for kids. All of the kids I know simply adore this game ! There is no violence, artwork is fantastic, and the game is easy to play. I can't remember anything I disliked about COI.
Castle of illusion is worth buying. It has countless hours of gameplay and a lot of diversity.
Recommended for everyone.

As the big fan of the original game I was rather scared for a remake since so many games have been butchered by them. This however was done justice.

The graphics are very clean and nice. Gameplay was similar to the original but with enough fresh ideas to keep things interesting. Music was fantastic - particularly in that they included an option to have the original music hidden away in the options.

Exactly as a remake should be done, well done Sega.

An adequate platformer, this game is brought down by shoddy controls (I feel like there's a lag, but it could be the timing problems posted here and elsewhere), awful cameras that don't always show Mickey or his next destination (requiring you to jump blindly and hope for the best), and overall quality issues (e.g. audio balance for surround systems, frame rate at launch, etc.)

It's not the worst way to spend a weekend, and if you get it for a few dollars, I'd say take a chance. Otherwise, there are so many fantastic platformers available, why settle for something average?

edit: Maybe I'm being too hard on it, so I'll come back and update once I've found all the collectibles and whatnot. In the meantime, I will say this: It's a pretty easy game, and the visuals and audio (despite the bizarre volume levels) are both nice. In other words, it could totally pass as a great family game, or as a gateway title. For these reasons, I've changed my review to a positive.

A very cute, simple and kid friendly platform game. The graphics are crisp and perfectly cartoony. The action is simple, maybe too easy. The gameplay is smooth and fluid. All in all, it's not worth the price they are asking for it, but pick this up when it's on sale. Definitely pick this up if you play with your kids.

Old enough to have played the original? Then you'll love this. If not it's a fairly basic but fun platformer. Wait for a Steam Sale.

A surprisingly good game, the environments are beautiful and Mickey's animations are really well done, the music is pretty decent and there are hidden Mickeys scattered around the various worlds, sadly the game doesn't last very long and isn't very hard, though the floaty controls can and will mess up a few of your jumps.

All in all a solid game, I would recommend it as a casual thing to pass the time.

Very polished re-imagining of one of the best Genesis games out there.

I like that they stayed faithful to the classic game, without making a straight up carbon copy. The few risks they took with the game really paid off.

The game's visuals and art-style are of traditional Disney quality. The game looks good, runs well, and invokes the magical nostalgia factor of the original throughout.

The new 2.5D platforming was fairly simple, rarely a challenge, but overall a lot of fun (exactly the way I feel about the Genesis version). I read some reviews that complained that the controls were bad, or that they were experiencing input lag... I am using a decent gaming PC, Windows 8.1 with an Xbox 360 wired controller, and I experienced neither of these problems.

I recommend this for fans of Castle of Illusion on the Genesis, SEGA fanboys, Disney freaks, and basically anyone who enjoys a solid platformer.

Quite simply, Castle of Illusion is a fun game to play. And, shoot, Mickey's game is lookin' great with the remake. However, it's very simplistic and can be finished within a couple of hours. So, it's highly over-priced.

If you can pick it up for a few bucks, it's worth it. Otherwise, it's probably best to think long and hard about whether this is a game you want to spend much money on. Still, I give it a thumbs up. I never got to play it when I was kid, but all these years later, I'm glad I finally got the chance. I just wish there was more to it.

Similar to Super Mario 64, only big difference is that this is a side scroller.

EDIT: THIS GAME IS ALSO SUPER HARD.

Good story and graphics! High replayabilty thanks to the achievements and costumes etc! I have 8.9 hours played, but 2 of them I was idle! I finished the game in 5 hours and spent another 2 hours replaying the levels to do the time attacks and get all the collectables! Worth the money, especially since I got it for £2.50 on the www.HumbleBundle.com! Great game!

Castle of Illusion is a charming reboot of a classic platformer, similar to the way Duck Tales was recently remastered. As far as I know, this game way by no means a hit, and I feel like that's a real shame. Besides being gorgeous visually, the controls are tight and the levels are interesting; not to mention it has all the charm associated with Mickey and his Disney world. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game, and if you've read any of my other review you will know that I am anything but a fan of platformer games. Castle of Illusion just has something about it.. perhaps it's the fantastic feeling controls that don't try to fight me at every turn, perhaps it's just the little kid inside me enjoying the refreshing innocence, or perhaps it's just the magic of Disney, but I wholeheartedly recommend this game for anyone of any age.

The graphics are great, level design is also impressive in addition to marvelous music. Gameplay is not original, but more than average.

This ganme does not seem to be well optimized for the PC. The framerate can sometimes drop and the controls when the mode turns to '3D' does not really work. For example, if you try to jump while clicking both "Bottom" and "Right" on your keyboard, Mickey will not jump!
Unfortunatelt, the game ss very very short. You can beat this in 2-3 hours.

If you are a hardcore platformers fan, get this. Otherwise, wait for the sale and get it.
