This is not a review, but I highly recommend this game for the following reasons.

1. Mickey mouse sets out to rescue Minnie mouse from the not so wicked witch really..
2. Simple 2.5D platform jumping game.
3. Classic Disney art style.
4. Daft boss fights.
5. Remake of the original Megadrive/Genesis version

The Good:
Based on a classic
Solid platformer gameplay
Cute story
Lots of collectibles

The Bad:
If you don't like Disney you won't like this
Do not expect this as a simple remake
Mostly quite easy besides getting all collectibles and a couple boss fights

Castle of Illusion was one of my favorite Genesis games, so I was very interested in this. It was a pleasant surprise to find that although this is not really a remake at all, but instead was a whole new game based on the themes, enemy movements, and basic premises of the original. Hence we have a classic based on a classic.

The game will move from 2D to 3D seamlessly, and without any controllable camera, so if you don't like this (like on Yoshi's story to some degree), you might dislike the game. I found it to work well combined with charming graphics and fun but simple platforming. The boss fights are interesting and unique, and the final boss fight is a satisfying challenge. Throw unlockable costumes to the mix for collecting hidden secrets and you've got a great game.

An adequate platformer, this game is brought down by shoddy controls (I feel like there's a lag, but it could be the timing problems posted here and elsewhere), awful cameras that don't always show Mickey or his next destination (requiring you to jump blindly and hope for the best), and overall quality issues (e.g. audio balance for surround systems, frame rate at launch, etc.)

It's not the worst way to spend a weekend, and if you get it for a few dollars, I'd say take a chance. Otherwise, there are so many fantastic platformers available, why settle for something average?

edit: Maybe I'm being too hard on it, so I'll come back and update once I've found all the collectibles and whatnot. In the meantime, I will say this: It's a pretty easy game, and the visuals and audio (despite the bizarre volume levels) are both nice. In other words, it could totally pass as a great family game, or as a gateway title. For these reasons, I've changed my review to a positive.

A very cute, simple and kid friendly platform game. The graphics are crisp and perfectly cartoony. The action is simple, maybe too easy. The gameplay is smooth and fluid. All in all, it's not worth the price they are asking for it, but pick this up when it's on sale. Definitely pick this up if you play with your kids.

Ruined by controls. It reacts too late. It just doesn't follow what you want to do at the right time you want it, which is critical for any platformer, specially for the difficult ones like this one. It's too bad, since graphics, sound, etc. are awesome.
Moreover, I needed to fallback to keyboard, since it wouldn't work with my gamepad (not a xbox one, but works perfectly with almost every game supporting a controller).

I found out that disabling antialiasing and "post-processing" helps a lot. I also lowered resolution to 1280x720 at 50 hz. I don't have the best machine out there, but it's above the average (phenom x3 + geforce 730) and for instance runs Trine and Grid 2 like a charm. Seems this game requires a lot of processing power, way more than you would expect from it.

It's a great platformer. Very polished, very enjoyable but ridiculously short. One world in any Mario or Donkey Koung Country game is as long as this entire game. Not anywhere near worth 15$, not quite worth 5$ either. I snagged it for 2.50$ or so and it was worth that much.

Reminds me of legendary Donald Duck: Qu@ck Att@ck (Goin' Qu@ckers*!) and of course original Castle of Illusion. Very funny and well made remake.

This new version of Castle of Illusion retains all the great atmosphere that made the original game a timeless classic, adds a superb remastered soundtrack and has easy to use controls. Recommended for everyone who loved this title on the Mega Drive / Genesis and for anyone who feels like playing a great platform on the PC.

A blast from the past, the original on SEGA Genesis was the first video game that I ever personally owned. I spent years playing that game. This HD version is legit. It's a competely different game, apart from the basic story behind it. There are 3 different types of people that need to play this game.
1. Disney fans. I mean, how can you beat playing a Mickey Mouse game that isn't just a little kids game?
2. Fans of the original. I mean, everything about it is just a better verison of the original. YOu can even change the music to the original! Plus, Jello!!
3. Anybody that likes platformers. It's beautifully done. It's easy enough that kids can play it without getting super frustrated, but there's enough difficulty to keep you from getting bored super easily, and it's just fun, plus you can tell that it wasn't put together by a one man team. There's a lot of detail, and I haven't noticed any glitches thus far.

this game is pretty good imo. it succeeds its predecessor.

the items in the games are slightly difficult to find. but i got all chili peppers on my first run amazingly.
its just the magic cards....

the only downside i can think of is bad fps for my computer. i can play it still though, so i guess i shouldn't complain

This is how a remake should be done. The game is a bit short but if you are a perfectionist there's plenty of stuff to do other than just finishing the game. The graphic is gorgeous and the animations are some of the best seen in a platform game. The price is a bit high for what the game has to offer but if you like the genre you should definitely check it out. On sale is a must buy.

Sir Faulty's Scorecard

Personal Rating: "Worth purchasing"
Traditional Rating: 7 out of 10
Genre: Action Adventure/Platformer

Old-school trickery

Disney was no stranger to the late eighties and nineties consoles back when it was Nintendo waging a console war with SEGA. Arguably two of the most memorable titles for each system were Ducktales for the NES and Castle of Illusion for the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis. Ducktales had the edge - being more fiendishly difficult than Mickey Mouse's SEGA outing but both exuded charm and were bestsellers on either system.

Cut forward 25+ years to the year 2013 as both popular titles re-emerged in full HD glory for a new generation of gamers and for the first time ever - debuting on the PC. I can see that the more modern gamer will probably find the gameplay on display here a bit antiquated and Castle of Illusion will possibly hold very little appeal for them (outside of the Mickey Mouse and Disney connection) but it's clear the intention here - Castle of Illusion is a love letter to the gamer that cut his/her teeth on these kind of games in the past. While Ducktales: Remasterd is a scene by scene remake (with newly implemented graphical cut-scenes), Castle of Illusion is more of a re-imagining taking the five levels of illusion Mickey must traverse in order to save his dearly beloved, Minnie Mouse, from the clutches of the evil witch Mizrabel and giving each of them a modern spin and a completely new lick of paint. Each of these worlds, like the original, are split into two relatively short levels with the third housing a boss battle for Mickey to overcome.

I had great fun playing this game as a child back in the early nineties so it was pure nostalgic delight exploring these redesigned levels that pay due homage to the levels from the old SEGA classic. While I never found the game on the Mega Drive to be particularly challenging it was certainly a fun romp for my childlike sensibilities back then and this remake of Castle of Illusion fits the bill quite nicely. Most experienced platform gamers will breeze through Castle of Illusion in a jiffy but the controls are tight (except for the swimming sections where it feels like one is trying to maneuver a tank through a mouse hole) and for the most part the game plays and looks beautiful on modern systems.

Castle of Illusion is a simple platformer and when put under scrutiny one can see how mechanically game development has moved along in leaps and bounds - you just have to compare this title with the recently released Rayman Legends to see that Castle of Illusion is nothing more than a nostalgic time-capsule that embraces an age when games were far more simpler and innocent without all the moral grey areas that encapsulates modern gaming today.

If you have fond memories of playing through Castle of Illusion as a child, I wouldn't hesitate to encourage you to pick it up. Chances are you will probably have families and kids of your own now so this is a great way to introduce them to the kinds of games you used to play as a kid. At $14.99 it's priced just about right for the amount of adventure time held and its a great way to spend an afternoon with an old friend from the past.

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse is a complete re-imagining of the iconic Genesis/Mega Drive adventure.
Fans will enjoy the original storyline as they help Mickey save Minnie.

A great remake and a showcase for the key elements that make up a successful platformer.

I was a bit afraid to get this because of Ducktales: Remastered falling short.

But now that I finally played Castle of Illusion I can say I really liked it.

Even though I played Castle of Illusion on the Sega Mega Drive back in the days, I did not go into this game expecting it to be excactly the same experience. It had some frustrating moments like the MD version (the good kind), however it seemed a bit easier overall but not too easy.

It's a good platformer, with nice levels that speaks to the imagination. Very suitable for children and adults!
Playing with a controller is highly recommended.

If i'd have to give a slight negative point then it would be that the game isn't that long... BUT! there is a time attack and some collectibles to stretch it a bit if you are into that.

So yup I recommend it!

I must say I was quite suprised by this game.
I'm not sure if the suprise was completely positive.

I used to play the second part, world of illusion, a lot with a friend on Sega. Naturally, I was excited to play this one (which I never had before.)
However, after only two hours of this game it's almost ended and this is my biggest dissapointment.
The graphics are awesome, and I think the game is targeting the younger audience (It can be slightly challenging sometimes though.) but to pay 12 euro's for this? I don't know..

My advice:
Fun to play, but wait till it has 75% off. This makes it worth it's value.

Castle of Illusion is a remake from the classic Mega Drive game. This time your adventure will be a lot more forgiving and easy. This means that Castle of Illusion is worth to play only if you want to see an iconic game reimagined for the new generations. Also, it's a good choice to introduce kids to the world of platformers.

This is an incredibly well done remake of one of my favorite games as a kid. I loved it and I hope they do more of the old Disney games like this!
