From the minds behind "Psychonauts",there you go Brutal Legend. Basically a free roaming game that incorporate hack 'n' slash and strategy elements, Brutal Legends will let you dress the part of Eddie Riggs, a roadie that will be carried in a fantasy and enchanted world called Brutal Land, to set all the humanity free from the tiranny of the emperor Doviculus.Lets start to examine the strongest pro of this game: the music. Brutal Legend have a superlative ost, that go from classic '70 british metal to the more recent black and thrash, including metal legends as Megadeth, Slayers, Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Dark Tranquillity just to quote the most famous bands in this game. Almost everything in this game its a tribute to metal and rock, you will lost the count of all the quotes inspired by songs, bands and metal lifestlye, and if you have a good knowledge about this kind of music, you will laugh a lot during the dialogs between the charismatic characters (most of the time, inspired by living legends of rock (For example, Ozzy Osbourne will become your supplier for what does concerne weapons and vehicle upgrades xD). Enviromental are astonishing, i will almost say that the are the most beautiful and various that i've ever seen in a game: you will travel in wastelands, jungles, iced mountains and so.Another tribute to Metal genre like the epic or speed metal so. At this point you will reasonably think "Its the perfect game, what could be wrong with this?".Unfortunately, Brutal Legends suffer of some serious flaw(This IMO, maybe you wont noticed a lot these lacks during the game).First, the map its huge and sometimes, its a bit hard to move around it. I constantly needed to use the map during the game, and i find it pretty annoying since you must pause the game and break the rhythm of the game.A minimap would were VERY useful and i dont think it was a hard thing to implement. Control system its not so good too. The strategy phases are annoying as hell to play them with the keyboard, your ranks wont follow properly your order and its hard to command there. About the combo system: i dont really know what to think about it, this game have some combo that you can unlock during the game, but honestly, i rarely used them, i just went through the battles by smashing my left click button of the mouse, but maybe they will become useful at the hardest difficult level (I completed Brutal Legend at normal difficulty). Last flaw its about the car. I found it hard to drive sometimes, controls are not so good and car tend to be stucked in every rock you will find sometimes xD Beside jokes, its not a serious issue imo.
Extra: beside the main story, there are a good ammount of side quest, for example cars race, hunting mission, giving support to your troops and collecting stuff around the Brutal Lands. The lenght of this game its so long enough, you will be busy for more than 30 or 40 hours if you are planning to do everything.
Little author note: i personally think some songs could have been replaced by more famous one.
Example:Metal Storm by slayer, replaced by Angel of Death or Raining blood or Laser Cannon Deth Sentence/Bloodlines instead of Mermaider for Dethklok. Very personal opinion anyway, the OST still remain one of the best that you can find in a videogame
SUMMARIZE:Should you buy Brutal Legends? Yes, but preferably, when its discounted. Im a Rock and Heavy fan and though this, i wasnt enthusiastic when i play it like when i see it on Steam. Isnt definetely a bad game, this for sure, but more than one thing could have been done way better. My vote would be a 6.5 or 7 out of ten, if i should give one.
