+ Updated versions of classics "The Age of Kings" and "The Conquerors" to run on modern systems
+ Steam Workshop support with good compatibility for legacy mods
+ Same classic gameplay with improvements still being made

+/- Multiplayer is easy to set up but one person lagging still slows the game for everyone

A game that made part of my childhood, one of the best RTS I ever played, brought back in its full glory with HD graphics.
It's a must have on your library!

Age of Empires II HD, well HD? Not really. That doesn't change the fact that it's still a pretty good stragety game.
I personally love the unique units you can train in castles, for instance when you play as the Spanish you can train a unit called the Conquistador in your castle, a unit wich only you (while playing as Spain) can create.
The maps are quite big, so enough space for large battlefields.
While the naval battles aren't bad either, I personally love the land battles between two different infantry units.
The original 18 civilizations are still in the game, but a DLC has been added: The Forgotten (empires)
This DLC ads 5 new civilizations, including the Italians and the Inca's.
All civilizations have got their very own unique unit, and building style.
An awesome new campaign has been added aswell. Here are a few short descriptions about the different campaign scenario's:

1. Alaric I:

The trauma of the Hun invasion in the 4th century has shaped Alaric, the fearsome warrior king of the Goths. But can the beloved king secure a new homeland for his people in the territory of the collapsing Roman Empire?

2. Sforza:

Always hungry for glory and wealth, Sforza wanders around 15th century Italy, offering his services to the highest bidder. Will he pick the right battles or make the wrong enemy? Take the fate of the young mercenary captain in your hands.

3. Bari:

400 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Italy is still up for grabs. Relive the tale of the port city Bari from the point of view of a Byzantine family, rising from the common soldiery to the nobility. Beware, for not only Bari is at stake, but also control of Southern Italy.

4. Dracula:

History forged an incredible legend around the man who ruled Wallachia in the mid-15th century. Holding his ground against the vast armies of the expanding Ottoman Empire, his cruel tactics made him the most feared man in all of Eastern Europe. Will his thirst for blood and the loyalty of his soldiers hold the Turks back for good?

Sounds good doesn't it? Well it is.

The €18,99 you pay for a game wich should be HD but the only thing HD in the game is the water, might be a bit much. But it's defenitly worth it.

Really? After all these years?

While this game runs smoothly on single player mode. On multi-player it really is slow, but not uncomfortably slow, more like game-cripplingly slow. By the time you get to the good part of a match, the game will freeze, and you will be constantly prompted with a connection lost window. So far I haven't been able to finish an online match without quiting out of frustration. I have 71 games on my library and this is the only one I'd ask a refund for. I remember having smoother gameplay experiences in an old Windows ME, 64-megabyte RAM, 500 MHz Celeron box. It is really painful to play. I have tried several solutions posted in forums without any improvement. Really, what's the point of a remastered game if you really can't play it at all?

▐▐░░▒▒▓▓ Review ▓▓▒▒░░▐▐

Oktober 1999; one of the most durable games all the time was born made from the hand of microsoft studios; its name: Age of Empires II. Even Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, which turned up at the same time, wasn't in a position neither to beat down the rapidly growing fanbase nor to outclass Age of Empires II itself.

Yet so many years later none games from this genre have nowere near enough reached the quality of Age of Empires II and we all ask ourselfs; is there something which can make such an old game better and give it modern conveniences to the newer operating systems? I'll give you the answer; a second coat. HD and the option to play with higher screenresolution.
With this AOEII looks better as never before, however the gameplay and everything else you may know from the old version has remained. Sadly this includes also unaltered animations from the unites, which causes the feeling that the whole game seems to be a bit laggy, especially when you have a lot of unites on the field.

Don't stop to read now! This and the price (18,99EUR/$ 19.99) could may be a reason to close this window within the second you saw the last sentence, but don't you dare! It's worth the time.

Remember when there was a population limit of 200? Microsoft had the wonderful idea to increase it and allow us to create not less than 500 unites. A real ease for most of the gamers, even if there was a mod which did the same to the old one.
Apropos ease: The multiplayer from the old version is yet after this many years still active but a pain in the neck to get it work properly, if I may say so. To avoid this, you are now able to play through the steam p2p multiplayer which microsoft implemented. As if this wasn't enough they also added a ranking system which permit you to duel yourself with other gamers and be the best!

Also steam called a workshop for this game into existence, so feel free to scroll through all the fanmade maps, graphics and so on!

Incidentally this version contains the add-on "The Conquerors" and if you still want more you also be cordially invited to buy "The Forgotten" Once a fanmade product, now remastered and available at the same menu from AOE II after purchase.

As to the rest you can expect playfully exactly what it was back then: Almost a perfect real time strategy.

▐▐░░▒▒▓▓ The lesson is clear ▓▓▒▒░░▐▐

Not every remake is good enough to fit into the quality of these old games... but in my opinion microsoft studios made nearly everything perfect. Till now I have no regrets about the purchase of this game plus its DLC and I guess it will still mesmerize me when I am old and bony and begin to fall apart! ;)

▐▐░░▒▒▓▓ Scoring ▓▓▒▒░░▐▐

Gameplay: 10.0/10.0
Graphics: 9.0/10.0
Controlls: 10.0/10.0
Sounds: 10.0/10.0
Value of Replay / Lengt of Playing: Endless
Recommendable: How can you ask? Go and buy it... NOW!

All in all: 10.0/10.0
