It is great that valve made a way for indie devs to get their games on steam without simply opening the floodgates like apple's app store. But I do hope valve will continue to work on and improve steam greenlight. Anyone that spends enough time on steam greenlight will notice that good games can get overlooked and awful games or even outright scams often get greenlit. The games themselves don't appear to actually get checked out by a human at any point in this process.

I decided to get into game development a year ago, and have been working on a few concepts which include an RTS, and a few minor projects which deal with different types of AI. I became interested in the Steam Greenlight after another dev friend of mine suggested I take a look at it. After a day of deliberation, I decided why not.

I've also used the Steam Greenlight quite a bit from a customer's standpoint to vote new games in, which I enjoy the concept of other steam community members being allowed to vote on what they want. Yes, the critiques can be harsh at times, but it will only help a developer make their game better.

Finally, of course, the proceeds go to a Children's foundation which I love the thought of. Even if you don't have any need for Steam Greenlight at the moment, but have some money to spare -- I'd recommend it.

If you're getting this to actually start a game of some kind; best of luck!

Regards,
Richard

The entire service is a mess. Next to nothing good has come out of this.

Greenlight isn't a barrier its a mild inconvenience. Good indie games used to do really well on steam, but now they just get buried under an avalanche of terrible. Steam needs to go back to curating their service before it ends up like Android and Apple's app store.

On the bright side it gives money to charity.

Since joining Greenlight it has been a rough road. Gamers for the most part will reject your idea based off nothing. Usually gamers who vote on Greenlight don't want the new games that come so they usually vote no just because the game is there.

Watching the stats of the game on Greenlight is awesome and really helps you gauge how to advertise your game to the general public.

Giving incentive to votes such as giving the game for free on release of the game doesn't really give the gamer hope that they are going to get a quality game but just another number to their Steam library.

Having access to other Greenlight developers is great and we try to bounce ideas off each other to try and get each other game onto Steam. It somewhat feels like a joint effort to impress the gamer looking at the potential game and to get the word out on the game.

Its great the money goes to charity instead of Steam themselves. Its great that children can benefit from gamers and developers so that the child can have a better life.

I'd like to thank my Steam friends and friends around the world who helped me get the $100 dollar fee together to make this opportunity happen. I'd like to thank the gamers for voting Yes on my Greenlight game and I'd like to thank Steam for giving developers a chance to bring games to the gamers.

Just do it for the kids. Right now in this world, there are millions of children living below the poverty line. Personally, I know that I will never find any use for this product but improving the lives of children in over 70 hospitals worldwide is doing a good deed.

Children are our future.
