I really enjoy this game, despite only having 20 hours in the game it has kept me quite content for the while i've played it.
- Really good survival simulator
- realistic Sanity and hunger problems
- mods
- the dlc is cheap yet gives good content
- controller support (i prefer mouse and keyboard though)
- replayability (cause who doesn't like being thrown into different randomly generated worlds full of darkness, terror, and death?)
- hunger depletes a bit fast
- some loot drops are very hard to get
- very harsh on new players (be ready for a learning curve, especially if you manage to survive until winter)
- not much is explained on how to play when you first get in the game (at least it's easy to learn on your own)
10/10 Pro-Tip: Don't Starve
Would ignore moon phase just to get rekt by werepigs again.

I first saw this game played by Markiplier on Youtube. Was quite awhile ago by now, so little hard to remember when I first got it. I really like the art style. I even drew some art from the game for a friend, it was pretty fun to try. This game is a bit addicting and relaxing to play, that is when you aren't being attacked. It can be a challenge to survive and is quite funny to starve, when the game is called Don't Starve.

I've always loved games that have a touch of Tim Burton's works and this one just reminds of it. I'm not a huge fan of survival games but by gods, I am willing to go down that road for this game.

Don't starve is pretty good. I mean there's a lot of bad things about it, but yeah it's definitely good. I think my favorite part about it is the mods though. The art style is neat and all, but I don't particularly care for the default characters and being able to mod in some of the neat community ones is great.

As for the game itself, yeah I do certainly recommend it. Though if you're not super good at games, it might be kinda tough to play. This is gonna make me sound like an idiot, but I don't like the emphasis on not starving. Generally speaking it feels like that's all you do in the game at times. And no, the game being called 'don't starve' doesn't mean 'you get what the title says' because that's absolutely an abyssmal way to think when dealing with video games. A game isn't just it's title or we'd have a lot of trash games where you get called to take a ♥♥♥♥ on a toilet or stand still in a beat up warzone. Come to think of it, that might be the best description of what current call of duty is.

Fortunately the game is not just it's title. While struggling to not starve starts off very 'prominently' as in it takes a bit to get on your feet and maintain, there are other things to do and find. Exploring yields little camp sites, graveyards, pigmen farms and a lot of generally unique things. In fact exploration is pretty much required in order for you to progress in the game at all (if you're playing in story mode). Sure you can 'just survive' if you want, but there is an actual story mode sorta thing that you can activate. I never actually got to do it at any point so sorry I can't tell you if that's good or not. I guess you could say that if you agree with my review and you also like the idea of a story then this game might be a good pick for ya.

As far as mechanics go I think my biggest cry is the combat mechanics. I don't know if there is a more efficient way fo doing it, but using AWDS and clicking on enemies is how I struggled with it. I don't like that. If there's another way, perhaps the game should have had a 'tutorial' on how to do it. Clicking on enemies is tough enough and imprecise. It makes combat tedious at best and frustrating at worst. Not to mention a lot of the enemies have weird mechanics where they run in and out. Again, there are ways around their weird mechanics and you can make some pretty good weapons that make up for it. Personally I find the durability on weapons or the requirements for making them to be a tad steep. And a good chunk of them are hardly 'rewarding' to use. Like shooting a dude with a fire dart and having him catch fire...then catching the forest on fire and me going 'Not sure how I should feel, just gonna deal with this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ first'.

So I'm going to repeat myself now, the game is very much so into the 'positive' field and I ultimately recommend it, but be forewarned that combat is a tad annoying so if you're in it for interesting combat mechanics, you may want to look the other way. As with the logical flow of getting games, I recommend you look up a gameplay vid to ensure you'll enjoy the game.

You can spent half a day trying not to starve until you die form something stupid that you did like attacking a penguin or a buffalo.
I can ensure you that no matter how you die eventually you will find yourself smashing the ALT F4 and moving to another game but until that happened this game is great.

Me encanto!

The first time I played this game I didn't really "get" it. I ran around, I found some food, I died. Then I put away the game for a long time. Recently I decided to play again and started to realize just how much depth there is to the game. I've now played for hundreds of hours, I've tried streaming on twitch and watching others do the same. It has become one of my favorite games and I definitely recommend it.

+ Amazing soundtrack
+ Adorable character design
+ Their voices are musical instruments, how cool is that
+ They have bones in their hair, damn
+ WOODIE IS A BABE ♥ (love dem bearded hipster dudes)
+ Wes is precious, protect him at all costs ♥

- NEEDS achievements. Like, I survived an entire year in the wild, braving the cold, rain and monsters, I want to be acknowledged for that. Klei please add.

Don’t Starve is a survival/sandbox/roguelike game developed by Klei Entertainment. You take on the role of Wilson, a scientist who wakes up in a strange, untamed land and must battle hunger, hostile creatures, and insanity to stay alive as he searches for a way to escape. To that end, you gather resources from the mundane (twigs, logs, flint) to the bizarre (ghostly nightmare fuel, exotic animal hides, monster tentacles), explore, build a camp, invent new tools and buildings, and eventually find a door that takes you on a journey to the game’s antagonist, the enigmatic Maxwell.

Against all of my expectations, Don’t Starve turned out to be one of my favorite games. On a first pass, it seemed like a pretty repetitive ordeal: spend 30 minutes watching a nicely animated character pick grass, then mine stone and gold, then accidentally annoy one of the land’s many, many monsters, and start over again. When I gave it another try, however, I fell in love. The repetitive parts don’t actually take up that much of your time, and once you start building up a secure spot for yourself, defending it from hound attacks and lightning strikes, and striking out to see just what the heck is out in the beyond, it becomes immensely satisfying. For those who don’t like slow starts, there are options to customize the world that the game generates (procedural, if that wasn’t obvious), and there are guides aplenty for those struggling with basic questions like “how do I not die when the sun sets.”

The gameplay is simple and rock solid. You have three stats (hunger, health, and sanity), and for the most part you have to try to keep them all up. You roam around, you gather resources, you build what you need to survive, and if you aren’t dead, you start branching out: you discover how to make new things, you explore, you learn how to tame the wilderness, and eventually, you find a mysterious doorway that shows you what the game is REALLY about. It’s dark. And if you die somewhere along the way, you unlock new characters that still give you a sense of progression and can present you with entirely new ways to approach the game.

The sandbox component of the game is definitely not Minecraft by any stretch, and it doesn’t try to be. If you prefer direction in your gaming, there’s more here than you might expect. The fighting is pretty simple: you equip a weapon and some armor, you click on whatever you want to kill, your character takes a swing at them, and then you kite backwards to dodge their attack. Rinse and repeat. This can feel a little clunky when you’re surrounded by assorted objects, but I got used to it after a while. Despite its simplicity, the combat can get pretty tense, especially when certain gigantic winter beasts decide to appear inside your warm, cozy campsite.

  • Simple but surprisingly engaging (and dark) narrative, once you discover it
  • Taming the wilderness is very satisfying
  • Wide range of distinctive characters and heavy customization and modding options to tailor the experience

  • No trading cards
  • Some tasks get repetitive
  • Bad luck can make minor mistakes into restarts

Final Thoughts

Get it if you like building stuff, taming hostile environments, and staying out of the dark.

Rating (Out of 10): 9

This game is HARD. You get thrown into it with no tutorial, no explanation and no help. Not gonna lie - I ended up looking a lot of things up at the beginning because I don't deal with these types of games very well. However, you learn quickly and it gets to the point where you don't care why you're in this other world, why there are shadow creatures trying to kill you, etc. You just have to survive.

There's a lot of item collection and the opportunity to build bigger and better defenses, offenses, etc. There's no real right or wrong way to play this game. You will probably die a lot but there is tons of replayability.

Simply Fantastic. Can't say I've seen anything like it in all my gaming years (over 20 years now).
In a class of its own, despite being a survival game.
When I saw the game in the Steam store, I watched the videos, read some reviews, then checked out the community and workshop. The art direction of this series has always intrigued me, I just wasn't sure if it was something I could get in to.
The game went on Sale this week, so I picked it up. It's safe to say, 'the rest is history'.

What an amazing little survival game! I literally have to watch myself with this one, because what seems like 15-20min ends up being an hour or two, without even batting an eye about it. The sounds, music, mechanics, map design, 'critter' art and designs, all of it are just superb, and unique.

The game runs flawlessly, without any hiccups, so far. The modding community for this game is alive and well, ensuring that this series won't be going away anytime soon.

I highly recommend this game to ANY kind of gamer, it will surprise you! I haven't really played the "Together" version yet, but I'm quite certain it will only add even more fun to the game, and without a doubt, some hillarious moments!

5/5 Stars for this one. Buy it. Play it. I'm not responsible for any addiction that occurs there-after. ;)

Don't Starve: Shipwrecked is a standalone expansion to the base survival game Don't Starve . Let it be known that I have not played the original game to any extent and my impressions are based on the expansion and its content.

The narrative is entirely freeform and allows the player to create their own story according to personal playstyle. Your enjoyment in this regard is mostly limited to your own imagination. However, each playable character has his or her own personality quirks, quips and unique gameplay interactions. For example, my favorite character is a snotty librarian who is able to bypass certain tech restrictions due to her vast intelligence and in exchange is unwilling to eat spoiled food.

Due to the nature of permadeath games, the player's response to death is paramount to whether or not the game succeeds. When the player inevitably sees the "You died" screen, frustration will be a natural response. However, does the player feel enticed to try again? Has the player learned valuable information that will serve to prevent the same death from occurring? Don't Starve: Shipwrecked succeeds for the most part in this regard. For example, at a predetermined time a certain mob will spawn and attack the player. This acts as a test to see if the player has adequately prepared. The first time I had to fight this mob, I instantly died - I was not prepared. How could I be? I did not know that the pounding footsteps and the shaking ground were signs of my coming death. However, during my second attempt, I realized that this certain mobs' movements were incredibly predictable and burdened with a long attack animation. I kited them and dispatched them with ease. Five minutes later, while congratulating myself with a hearty vegetable stew, I was punched to mincemeat by a enraged ent revenging his fallen children who I had unwittingly used as my kindling for said stew. And so the ouroboric cycle of punishment/information/success/punishment continued. During the downtime when you are not being chased by rabid sharks or angry buffalo, you will spend your time traveling from island to island in search of new materials, new technologies and establishing bases of operation. There is also a beautiful settings menu with ample customization options for certain mobs/events/seasons/resources to be tweaked, increased or even removed. Do you really love picking berries? Increase the berry bush seed. Do you HATE @#(%@^( KLEPTOMANIC MONKEYS? Remove the monkeys... Or just feed them a banana next time, recruit them permamently, and start a primate civil war. Watch their monkey huts burn down; watch the baby monkeys scream for mercy while you lounge by the shore sipping some iced tea and listening to Rage Against the Machine.

The art style looks like the baby of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and American McGee's Alice: sharp lines and bright, contrasting colors all wrapped up in a twisted design. You will never look so good being mutilated over and over again. The sounds are interesting, unique, and did not devolve into repetition. However, the musical soundtrack needed more variance - I eventually listened to my own music and was perfectly content.

Do you enjoy being slapped in the face repeatedly by someone other than your wife? Do you relish the idea of convincing monkeys to murder each other with their own feces? Are you titillated by the notion of spending five hours building an empire only to die from a coconut falling on your head? Do you enjoy complex games with a myriad of gameplay elements which allow you to play your own game against the game? If you said yes to the above then Don't Starve: Shipwrecked is a game definitely worth dying.

50 hours on the XboxOne version and another 20 hours now that i downloaded it on PC. This is my go to time waster, So much fun and so immersive, it's one of those games that can make you late for work.
On the downside, there is no tutorial and there is a bit of learning curve. It seems like everytime I sit down to play, I learn something new.
This one is a must have.
