Starbound v1.1 - Changelog

Hey, everyone! It's patch day!

Version 1.1 is our first content patch since the full release of Starbound -- we've added a fishing game, item collections, Novakid villages and more! Check the changelog below for a list of major/minor changes and bug fixes, and then go relocate some Fluffalo!

Major Changes

  • Fishing
    • Two tiers of fishing rods are now craftable from the Foraging Table and can be used to fish on ocean planets (including arctic, toxic and magma oceans)
    • Added 48 unique fish types to catch
    • Rare fish can give valuable rewards, including reel and lure upgrades to enhance your fishing rod
  • Collections
    • New Collections interface tracks various kinds of collectables including captured pets, figurines, fish, cooking recipes, fossils, and bugs

  • Added the Relocator tool, which allows non-hostile creatures such as critters, fish, bugs, and farm animals to be moved

  • Added friendly Novakid villages including a variety of new Novakid-themed furniture and objects

Minor Changes & Bug Fixes
  • Saloon furniture previously sold at Frogg Furnishings is now available in Novakid villages, and has been replaced with the Pastel set (which has its own unique tenant)
  • Novakids can now be generic tenants or guards
  • Added Novakid NPC dialogue
  • Implemented party chat and local (planet) chat
  • Acid rain now applies poison instead of direct damage
  • Console objects are now available as themed tenant rewards
  • Added option for “borderless window” style fullscreen mode
  • Improved sound effects for Staff abilities
  • Improved sound effects for several unique boss weapons
  • Adjusted which bugs appear in Midnight, Mutated and Giant Flower biomes
  • Shockhopper Mk I and Dreadwing now have a chance to drop their respective action figures
  • Mother Poptops on starter worlds now drop enough Core Fragments to complete the initial gate quest
  • Added chance for Snuffish to appear in ocean biomes
  • Kelp now unlocks the Rice Cake cooking recipe when picked up
  • Reduced moon threat level from 10 to 1
  • Fixed a bug causing merchants to offer material items for free (which made them impossible to purchase)
  • Fixed several armor descriptions that didn’t fit within their tooltips
  • Fixed a bug causing fireworks to deal large amounts of damage
  • Fixed birds and other monsters spawning in the atmosphere and asteroid layers of moons
  • Made several NPC-like monsters uncapturable
  • Fixed monsters getting stuck outside arena in final arena side quest
  • Fixed friendly NPCs and monsters being damaged by environmental effects such as traps
  • Fixed a few edge cases in pathfinding
  • Fixed several items displaying erroneous recipe unlocks when obtained
  • Fixed a bug causing underwater audio filters to continue after quitting to title
  • Fixed several cases of incorrect cursors displaying over GUI elements
  • Fixed a bug in LoS calculation determining whether the player can reach objects
  • Fixed a bug causing Dreadwing’s UFO to visually flip

Base Game = Ok Game pretty Fun.
Base Game + Multiplayer = The best its gonna get.
Base Game + Mods = Very very Fun.
Base Game + Mods + Multiplayer = Prepare to become StarLord as you adventure across the cosmos doing "a bit of both".
Base Game + Mods + Multiplayer + Free Time = Police being called to investate why you have disappeared and havent shown up to work in two weeks.

10/10 Would be a suspected kidnap victim again

I am not really sure what to make of the final version of Starbound. I bought this in it's early stages of development, and I have to say first off that I think it was a real mistake to release the game so early. It was literally years away from completion when it was first released. Way, way too early. Anyway, on to the final version, and I think I prefer the earlier version!!! The earlier version was more of a sandbox idea, you could just wander about and build things. The final version, though, I really find the alien creatures very annoying. They always attack you and seem able to kill you with just a few hits. When you are trying to learn the game, and more to the point when you are more interested in exploration and building rather than fighting, their constant presence of atacking creatures is very tiring. And I also have some objection to the fact that most alien cratures would be unfriendly. It would have completely changed the feeling of the game had they mostly been friendly instead. There really should be an option to disable or at least reduce the numbers of them. They are literally every ten feet in the game. So I guess whether you like Starbound very much depends on what you expect from the game. Recommended? Well, like I said, depends what you expect from the game. I will say yes, but like me you may find it a bit annoying.

So... I've played this game before it was fully realeased. It was... alright, to say the least. Now it is... alright yet again, just a bit better.
The thing that made me buy it was space, and the fact it has exploration and sandbox features. I always wanted to have a sandbox game where I can do whatever the hell I want in the infinite universe, and Starbound is that game.

"Then why do you give this game a negative review?" You might ask.

Let me first tell you what's great about this game:
1. You have your own spaceship where you can travel wherever you want;
2. There is some nice variety in planets, monsters, biomes, weapons etc.;
3. There's the story, which isn't really deep or complex in quests, but it's good IMO;
4. Each race has history and culture... except for Novakids but that's because they don't care about history;
5. There is a lot of stuff to upgrade, collect, buy etc.;
6. You can play on instruments and form a band;
7. A lot of other things I don't remember...

Now with the issue that just makes me get bored in this game really quickly:


I honestly don't know. I just don't want to build anything. Just a thought of it demotivates me from playing, so does collecting stuff because I know that stuff like fish or cooking collections will just end up being a chore.
I didn't even get myself to decorate my ship. All I did was to upgrade it to maximum size and then just left it half empty...
I keep trying to guess what deters me from building in this game. Maybe the game is too small? Maybe there are too much furniture to pick from? I don't know... And I have the similar issue with Terraria, though there I also have issue with how it is unfriendly towards newbies (more on that in my Terraria review).

Now, it was a hard choice between recommending the game or not. My personal experience is just slightly more towards no, but that's just me.
If you had similar issues in Terraria, then you will only have fun doing main quests, you'll get bored after that. If you play Terraria a lot though then by all means buy it, you won't regret it.
Now for those non-Terraria players. If you like space and exploration, then I guess you'll like this game. If you are also creative and like building, then you should give it a try.

Great game with lots of fun to be had. If you enjoy building and exploring with some decent boss fights thrown in, I would jump on this without question.

Since the laster few updates for starbound after launch, it seems like the game has
a bigger sense of adventure but without all the troubles of finding things now.
Like the one sign mission beta... But, of course this game has now finally up to the end of the game.
There is a lot of mods to choose from, from music to weapons and races even.
The community has much potentional for this game, and hopefully chucklefish can support the modding community.

I'd like to give this game a big 10/10 for everything it has.

Freaking. Awesome. An amazing game, Terraria on crack with hints of what No Man's Sky could've been. Game is challenging and enticing, really draws you in. Exploration is amazingly fun. Definitely a great game.

Before the 1.0 Update, my review would've been positive.
Allow me to elaborate.
The last update before 1.0 would've been great to add all of this 1.0 stuff to. Not take away some of the other content, although maybe they kept some content in, but I just got so bored looking for villages to scan some items in that would lead to some sort of door key somehow. I haven't beaten it since.
My point is, the game isn't the same as it once was, and I just haven't gotten used to it, and i don't think I will.
Sorry Chucklefish, but you sort of dropped the ball just as you got it spinning of your finger.

So you want to know about Starbound

Where the hell do I start.

There are many, many pros, and maybe a few cons. If you're lucky.
So let's get started.

Let's keep note that I've sunk about 200 hours into this game, "completed" it twice, and am quite fervorously into the modding community (If fervorously a word? Ah well.)

•A comprehensive GUI and crafting system makes the game very easy to get around in
•A full "Technology" advancement system based on improving existing tables rather than making new ones
•Movement reminiscent of games such as Terraria and other sandbox-platformers makes a familiar scheme.
•An upgrade system for your infinitive mining device
•An energy system that handles both guns and magic, allowing for diverse gameplay
•A developer base geared to the community, to the point of going through the pain of integrating the Workshop for mods
•An exceedingly diverse building assortment, from planks and bricks to solid flesh and blood
•A large assortment of "Things to do" from making a settlement to collecting every bug in the universe
•A crew to take with you on expeditions and hunts - If you've the time to hire them
•A tech system that's more comprehensive than punching wood

Now, naturally, as with any good game, there's a fair share of cons, that many would see as features to "add difficulty"
This is MY OPINION and MY OPINION ONLY so don't get upset if you disagree. I'm completely open to debate, mind you, if you've reasoning to back it up.

That's not a valid argument. This shouldn't need to be cleared up, but just in case- this is the internet.

•The difficulty of finding appealing building material is phenomenal. I still need that stupid floran carving..
•This is a spoiler, ye been warned The absurdity of the "Item Scan" missions is rediculous, Esther.
•The temptation to cheat is always looming, as it's as simple as a single command and there's no penalty for it.
•The "Immobility" of the player is rediculous as well, as you need a hoverbike to really get exploring.
•Fall damage is very forgiving, throwing yourself off of a cliff and pulse jumping at the last second negates the challenge.
•The difficulty slope at the beginning is quite looming, and then later it's just too easy.
•The shops around the universe can be quite useless unless you need that sugar for your cake, or that super spin slash.
•Honestly, who needs to go beyond the third mission if you're not focussed on "Beating" the game? In other words, we need more reward for going through the pain of scanning randomly generated structures, and that makes it so hollow.
•While having a crew is nice, they really don't do much off the ship, and they get themselves killed so much.

Terraria but SO much better! Has an ending and a story with side characters who don't feel like lame NPCs. I love the pixel art for this aswell. Looks and sounds are perfect. Some glitches but they don't affect gameplay also you have to expect glitches in a game. The multiplayer is a little messed up but not a big problem. Overall a good game.

This game is basically what No Mans Sky should have been on a 2-D plane and already has proven to have better developer updates and feedback than NMS could ever dream of. Basically its a great space survival story with lots of replayability. A personal 10/10.

Honestly, this is the best game of the 2D genre in my opinion. Are you able to make an orchestra with a huge amount of musical tools in any other game?

1. A ridiculous amount of planets to explore.
2. Musical tools. They are absolutely amusing. And there is so much of them!
3. The crafting system is amazing, so much different stuff to craft. And as you craft something, you get to craft even more! In addition to a huge crafting system, you can find blueprints in chests and learn some new craftings!
4. The planets aren't as big as I would like them to be, but they are still huge. You run around planets and you find buildings, ruins and stuff like that. It is so interesting to explore them!
5. There are side quests. You find a village on one of the planets and the NPCs can give you quests, and they reward you with a bag with random stuff! In addition to that, you have a chance to recruit them!
6. Different types of items. By that I mean common, uncommon, rare and legendary. Not sure if there is something between rare and legendary, but it makes the game so much fun for grinding.
7. Fishing. You have a chance to catch each fish, from common to legendary. You can craft only two fishing poles, and that's a bit lame, but they might add it in the future. You have some upgrades to the fishing poles, but you can't craft them, only catch them from uncommon fish and higher. With a chance of course. Which again, pretty lame, but at least they have a fishing system that looks absolutely sweet!
8. Vehicles. There is like, 4 "cars" and one boat, that you can purchase with pixels, but they look very cool.

1. The main quest is the worst thing in the game. You need to explore planets and scan random stuff to get points, and after like 50 points you complete the quest. You return - get a quest to beat a boss - you beat the boss - you get the same quest but for another race. Pretty lame I have to say.
2. Not hardcore. Why do I say "not hardcore"? Because I've completed like two main-story bosses and went grinding for the best equipment (second to best), got some legendary weapons, and then completed all of the following bosses without having a challenge at all. Even the last boss wasn't that hard. I did not die to any boss, except one time that I fell into a trap and died. Basically, what am I trying to say is that the main story bosses got no effect on your gameplay. It's just, text that you read, go defeat a boss, finish the quest. The design of the bosses and the mechanics are pretty cool though. It's a bit hard to explain, but they are like... Simple mobs that you have to kill from a side quest, but they have more hp and the reward is better. In Terraria we had a lot more challenge defeating the bosses, even with two players.

Overall, the game is amazing. If you exclude the main quests, and look at the game without it, you can see a game that is better than Terraria by its degisn. 9/10.
