What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are Burrow Team, three people who love games, and we want players to help us refine Burrow War. Through Early Access feedback, we hope to improve artillery feel, weapon balance, maps, and multiplayer, while finding bugs, localization issues, and cultural expressions that need more care. Server-based online play and audio improvements are planned areas of further development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Early Access to last approximately 12–18 months from its launch. Server-based multiplayer testing, content polish and audio production still involve uncertainties. We will adjust this estimate based on actual development and testing progress and player feedback, and share important milestones. We are not committing to a fixed completion date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to develop server-based online play for more stable and convenient remote matches; improve voice delivery and explore human voice acting; refine the soundtrack, loops, transitions, and mix; and keep improving content, weapon balance, stability, and localization. Scope and priorities may change with development progress, testing, and player feedback.

We also plan to add animated story scenes made using AI-generated video. The scope and release timing will depend on production and testing progress.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Windows version includes five factions with 12 missions each: 60 offline campaign missions, plus offline skirmishes against computer-controlled AI opponents, local hotseat multiplayer and a PNG map editor. There are 63 pieces of equipment: 18 available from the start and 45 unlocked through first campaign victories, alongside 15 permanent starting-ammunition upgrades. The 220 campaign and ending comic scenes include offline synthetic narration and dialogue. Each campaign uses its faction's voice language: Chinese, English, German, Russian or Japanese. The interface and story subtitles support nine languages: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, Russian, German, Japanese, Hungarian, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese; changing subtitles does not change the voices. Local hot-seat and LAN multiplayer support 1v1 only, with up to two human players, two alliances, and four soldiers per alliance (eight soldiers total). Dedicated-server online play, additional animated story scenes and further audio improvements remain planned. Steam friend multiplayer still needs real-account and remote full-match validation and is not promised as a verified launch feature.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The current Early Access price is lower than our planned full-release price. We may increase the price as the content and playing experience improve, and will announce any decision to change it in advance. Any adjustment will depend on the actual content and development progress; we do not promise a fixed date or amount of increase. Actual regional prices are shown on the Steam store.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Share your feedback and suggestions through this page’s Community Hub or discussions; you can also visit the Withive Steam community group using the website link on this page. We plan to share development progress and update notes there. Bug reports, new ideas, weapon concepts and honest experiences are welcome. If any text, images, sounds or cultural expressions offend or hurt you, please tell us the location, language and reason. We will review feedback and prioritize improvements based on impact, reproducibility and our team's capacity.”

About This Game

This shot changes the next turn, too.

Read the wind, choose your angle, and set the power. A hit can hurt the enemy, blast through cover, and reshape the ground beneath your squad. The safe spot you found this turn might be a problem on the next.

One shared arsenal. Your choice of tactics.

Every soldier can use all the weapons owned by their team. Bring firepower to bear, carve a route with engineering tools, or use movement equipment to find a better position. Choose when to attack, when to make a path, and when to leave yourself a way out.

6202: humanity exits. Meerkats take the stage.

It is the year 6202. Humanity is extinct. AI once took over the human world, and vast radioactive clouds brought civilization on the surface crashing down. Meerkats surviving near the burrows gradually developed intelligence and began learning from the knowledge humanity left behind.

They inherited human knowledge—and some very bad habits. Burrow War takes a straight-faced, darkly comic look at war and its absurd machinery. Five factions bring different abilities, while soldiers share the same base attributes and general-purpose weapons. You can plan carefully. The explosions may have other ideas.

In this meerkat world, who wouldn’t want to blast their rivals sky-high and declare themselves supreme commander of the world?

Go solo, or bring your friends to the battlefield.

Practice your artillery skills in offline single-player campaigns and skirmishes, or face friends in turn-based battles. Every shot means thinking about your opponent's next move. Every friendly-fire mishap could become a story before the next match.

Build the next battlefield yourself.

Import PNG images, create terrain, and playtest it in the Windows map editor. From the first piece of cover to the last escape route, turn your ideas into the ground your squads will fight over.

An idea? A bug? A gloriously strange weapon?

Burrow War is made by Burrow Team, a small indie team of three people who love games. We want to make a game that gives you tactics to think about and mishaps to laugh over with friends.

Tell us about it. New ideas, bug reports, weapon concepts, clever tactics, and honest impressions are all welcome. Join the conversation and share a candid review of your experience. Your suggestions and gripes can help us make Burrow War better.

Have feedback, suggestions, or a problem to report? Whether it’s about gameplay, weapon balance, or a new idea, come talk with us.

Share your feedback and suggestions through this page’s Community Hub or discussions; you can also visit the Withive Steam community group using the website link on this page.

If something hurts or offends you, please tell us.

We still have much to learn about cultures, histories, and ways of expression around the world. If any text, imagery, audio, or other content in the game makes you feel offended or hurt, or seems culturally misjudged, please let us know as soon as you can. Sharing the specific passage or scene, the language, and why it troubles you will help us understand, investigate, and consider improvements. Our dark humor takes aim at war and its absurd machinery, and we take players’ feelings seriously.

What do we want to work on through Early Access?

We plan to bring Burrow War to Early Access and keep refining it with player feedback. Our plans include server-based online play for more reliable, convenient remote matches; improving voice quality and delivery, while exploring human voice acting; refining the soundtrack, music loops, transitions, and mix; and continuing to fix bugs, balance weapons, and improve localization and cultural expression.

These are development plans. Server-based online play and the audio upgrades still need development and testing and should not be treated as features already provided. Their scope and timing may change with development progress, test results, and player feedback. We plan to share progress and make clear what is available and what is still being made.

We also plan to add animated story scenes made using AI-generated video. The scope and release timing will depend on production and testing progress.

Language note: The Chinese and English introductions on this page have been proofread. The introductions in other languages have been proofread by AI. If you notice inaccurate translations, awkward wording, or cultural misunderstandings, please let us know.

AI-assisted content

The game includes some artwork, comics, character animations processed from pre-generated video, main menu background animation, music, synthetic voices, written content and localization made with generative AI assistance during development. Narration and dialogue for the 220 comic scenes are pre-produced synthetic recordings stored with the game, with subtitles in nine languages; these voices are not presented as performances by real actors. The current game does not generate images, video, music, voices or dialogue during play or send player prompts to a generative AI service. Computer-controlled opponents use game-planning logic. Additional animated story scenes remain planned.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The game includes some artwork, comics, character animations processed from pre-generated video, main menu background animation, music, synthetic voices, written content and localization made with generative AI assistance during development. Narration and dialogue for the 220 comic scenes are pre-produced synthetic recordings stored with the game, with subtitles in nine languages; these voices are not presented as performances by real actors. Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game depicts cartoon combat in a fictional war, including gunfire, explosions, character injuries and deaths. Some story scenes contain strong language, depictions of beer, and unsettling fantasy imagery.
