Play With Gilbert - Remake - Joure
Greetings Dear Gilbert Community!
Some of you may remember "Paint With Gilbert". Well, it's back but in a different form. Play With Gilbert should also currently be on sale as well for those interested and Whiskered Away has a presence on Steam in the form of a Store Page with a playable demo!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/740040/Play_With_Gilbert__Remake/

Paint With Gilbert Returns
Paint With Gilbert was released at the time as a small update that added a bit of artistry to the game where players could color blank drawings a small thank you to the community for their support. In that same vein I wanted to express my gratitude to my Patrons who've been supporting me and I decided to bring back Paint With Gilbert, once again, as a thank you! This is once again a free update which the entire community can enjoy!

Thank you:

Your support means so much to me!

While I think it was a fun little thing at the time. the whole mechanic was very cumbersome, tedious to perform and required a lot of patience. Kids and patience don't always go hand in hand too well.

I've been wanting to bring it back since I like games that allow players to express themselves in artistic ways. So I sat down and concluded that maybe it'd be fun to be able to literally paint the town red or blue, or pink or whatever color you'd feel like. Yes, even all the colors.

Using a tweaked version of the snowball / water balloon fight mechanics I was able to get working prototype going. Various colors to choose from and even special colors such as rainbow effect and random colored paint. You'll be able to paint almost anything (except for certain objects)

I created a new level just for this purpose where players can run around and paint the outside of buildings, or the interior of one of the apartments. It's up to the players how and what they paint. The Cheep Cheeps at the paint store can save your progress or clear all the paint in one go.

There is a paint decal limit that can be increased or decreased (under game settings) based on how much RAM and overall performant your computer is. Beefy PC's should be able to run fine with the decal set to max but since I am running a very modest PC setup myself I cannot verify how taxing it is. I set it to the highest and things ran fine mostly.

As I mentioned a new level has been created just for this game mode, aptly named "Canvas Avenue". You'll be able to access it from the level select menu, or from Gilbert's Neighbourhood (You might have to look around to find the new EXIT sign but I find it a lot of fun to add these EXIT signs across the levels to connect them all together in a way that allows players to explore and learn how these levels are connected.

Whiskered Away Has A Store Page On Steam
Gilbert's 2D outing is now publicly visible on Steam and it has a playable Demo for you to check out. The game is still being developed and thus this current version is subject to change in various ways. You'll be able to add the game to your wish list if you enjoy the demo and for me to receive feedback so I can make a better experience in the end.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1922800/Whiskered_Away/
I also created a small simple trailer for the time being, A more finalized trailer will be created when I get to the final stretches of development but for now, it suits its job I believe.

The demo will be updated periodically when new content is added. I will be participating in the Steam Next Fest for June and hopefully release the game not too long from then. I want this game to be a fun experience with more character interactions and dialogues.

I'm having a blast working on this game and I am considering making a 3D gilbert with the same kind of approach to character dialogues and story telling. I will have to see how the future unfolds.

Support Me On Patreon

The support I've received from my Patrons have been amazing and in fact has helped me more then they could suspect and they have my gratitude. Being a small indie dev is rough, especially the last few years. So, if you are in a position and thinking to yourself, yeah I'd love to see more games from this developer in the future then you can always take a peek at my Patreon page and see what its about.

I've set up a few tiers and I believe the rewards for them are pretty neat. I've thought a lot about how I would go about this and it's fairly straight forward. I won't bother you too much about it here and just leave a link to a post I made that describes the tier system in general and what you can expect.

Even if you don't want or cannot support me on Patreon, Joining the Discord server will enable you to offer support in the form of feedback and suggestions and being kept in the loop of what I'm working on, because I have a lot more planned than just Gilbert games.

IMPORTANT: Now I want to make it very clear that I am not selling my games on Pateron directly. This is purely for people who want to support me and my games as I do NOT want to compete with selling my games on Patreon. You will get rewarded on Patreon with the end product, but it's important to note that it's not a direct buy. I also want to make it very clear that you should be able to be in a position to even consider it.

MY PATREON

That's It For Now
There's still more that I want to add to the game, which will come when its ready. I will also have to take some time and go over the Gameplay Guide and make sure the content is up to date. So much has been added since the game's release I will have to make sure its all covered in there.

Take care

Merry Christmas Everyone
First of all I want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! It's been a little over half a year since the remake was released and it seems pretty much everyone has enjoyed it. Which I am very glad with. It's still not a perfect game (no game ever is) but I've done my best to smoothen things out and improve it here and there.

Improvements
  • CatCam activation tweaked - You now have to hold down the CatCam activation button for about a second before it activates. This is to avoid activating it by accident.
  • CatCam thruster speed increased - The thruster speed for the CatCam has been increased in order to travel large distances in less time.
  • Gliders saved per level - Gliders are now saved if you found one in a level. I am working on ways to disable them. On Rainbow Island you can disable it by talking to a Cheep Cheep, will most likely move it over to other levels.
Welcome To Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach is very much an odd choice to release during this time of year but I've been working on it for quite some time now, bit by bit and I really wanted to give something to you guys for Christmas. Rainbow Beach is a new take on the old beach level from the original game.

Rainbow Beach introduces new vehicles (Boats, Catski's and a Submarine) as well as new gameplay mechanics. You'll be able to search for treasure chests which may contain catbells or fishies. Some chests are buried and you'll have to find for a big colorful X and dg them up.

And you'll now be able to combine your glider with a big rocket. This combination enables Gilbert & friends to fly through the air. It's quite a lot of fun and I have put rockets in Down Town as well.

Rainbow Beach also adds in the Cheep Cheeps. These cute little birds can be found running around. Some can talk to you and help you out or give information. Cheep Cheeps will get a more prominent role in the future (working on a DLC with them front and center).

I also added two new hats and one new sunglass. I still have a few more ideas for this level but I ran out of time and had to make sure what I had was up to snuff for release.

That Other Game I Made
For those who might be interested, I've created another game called STARDROP. This was a huge endeavor and pretty much a passion project. If you're interested in story-driven Sci-Fi games with no pew pew I highly suggest to check it out. It's currently on sale too!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/552880/STARDROP/

Whiskered Away

I've talked about this game before but wanted to highlight it again! I improved on some aspects of the player's movement and some other small improvements which you can check out in the public beta.

Happy Halloween
Halloween's being celebrated in Play With Gilbert right now. You'll be able to hear spooky tunes, collect pumpkins instead of fishies and the kitties in the game are wearing their costumes.

New content for the game is in the works and a new Gilbert game is being worked on which is very different from the ones I've done so far (more info below).

For many people, myself included, the last 2 years have been incredibly taxing to say the least and in an effort to keep doing what I love I've set up a Patreon page to hopefully pull in support for current and future projects that are in development. I'll share more info about that at the end of the news update if you're curious and I think it's pretty interesting.

Celebrate Halloween in PWG

The Halloween event started on October 24th and with the new update will end on November 4th. I extended the timeslot a bit so that players can enjoy the event just a bit longer. Some of you might have noticed there's an overlap between PWG and Spookity Hollow and that's because the two games share the same base. This also means that your customized kitty can be brought over from Spookity Hollow and vice versa.

Meet Skye

From here on out the default kitties that the game starts with are Gilbert and Skye. Skye is now based after my daughters customized kitten and is going to be Gilbert's little friend. The two of them actually are going to have their own adventure in their own new game! Of course you can still customize Skye and make your own kitty in PWG but it's a small but important tweak.

I also fixed a few things in the game that were broken during the engine upgrade (Fairy lights weren't working properly) so there's that.

Spookity Hollow
For those of you who have missed it, Spookity Hollow has been released which is a standalone game based on the PWG remake project. It's a full on Halloween themed experience and one which I hope to expand upon a little bit to set it further apart and create a richer experience.

You can check it out here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1739150/Spookity_Hollow/

Whiskered Away

Now this is a project I've been wanting to talk about for a while now but couldn't due to it being in a very early stage. Whiskered Away is a different take on the Gilbert series as you can see it's a 2D platform game with adventure elements to it.

The game has a simple but fun little story attached to it and a simple yet effective dialogue system. This system that I created for the game allows me to create narratives and bring characters to life. On top of that I also developed a simple quest system, which is fully dynamic and will be used in both a linear and non linear way. This means some quests are mandatory while others are optional.

Lastly I also added abilities, which will be unlocked when you find certain characters that will teach them to you. This means that you may have to wander off the beaten path in order to unlock a new ability, which is the an aspect of the adventure portion.

Don't worry, the game isn't complex and the platforming isn't going to be incredibly tedious. As with anything Gilbert related I want people to have fun so I try to keep the game a little bit sand-box-y.

But hey, you can give the game a go right now. As I'm trying to expand the Gilbert community and also build a new one around the new game I've decided to release the early alpha out into the wild for free! This means that you can get involved directly with the game's development either by offering feedback, suggestions and more!

Hello Everyone!
I got some interesting Gilbert news for this update, so let's get right to it!

Engine Upgrade
Play With Gilbert has been upgraded from Unreal Engine 4.25 to 4.26. Luckily it wasn't as much of a headache than I feared it would be. Alongside upgrading the engine version I've also attempted a number of smaller fixes and changes to the game. Nothing you should notice while playing.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This engine upgrade requires a fresh new savegame. Don't worry, the game will handle it by its own and you can decline but the game may become unstable. This should remain a rare occasion since I am not planning any big upgrades in the future.

Fish-Run Returns
I am happy to announce that Fish-Run has finally returned to Play With Gilbert Remake proper! Fish-Run remains largely un-changed from the original game, except that it can now be played in single-player, where the goal is to beat the high-score. Another big change is that the game mode no longer requires it's own dedicated level. You will find Fish-Run within certain levels and just walk up to the Cheep-Cheep and ask to play.

Currently Fish-Run can be played in Gilbert's Neighbourhood, The Park and Down Town. Each level offers a slightly different variant of the game. Ranging from two or Three runners that drop fishies, time limit and the terrain being played in. I plant to experiment a bit more with Fish-Run in the future and see what other kinds of terrain I can play with, I'm currently thinking of trying it out in the water. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

When I created the original I would run circles around my daughter but the tables have turned. While recording the footage for the promo video My daughter beat me 4 out of 4. I'm so proud of her and it's really cool to see how much she progressed her skills from when she started 4 years ago haha. I hope you'll enjoy the new iteration Fish-Run as I have, I'm keen to implement other mini-games as well at some point!

Meet The Cheep-Cheeps!
I won't dwell on the Cheep-Cheeps too much here as they will be properly introduced at a later time when the focus is put on them fully but while they are technically introduced into the game through Fish-Run with this update, I have bigger plans for them in the long run. They're cute, funny looking "birds" that whom will serve a larger role in the game going forward.

Their main purpose lies in being able to talk to the player. They'll be the ones offering narratives in future updates sometime in the future. They will also play a significant role in Spookity Hollow, a new stand alone game in the Gilbert Franchise which you can read all about below!

Spookity Hollow Coming Very Soon
Spookity Hollow is a stand-alone companion-piece to Gilbert, see it as an expansion adding some new mechanics and a big, Halloween themed map. It has a spooky castle, a graveyard, lots of pumpkins and a lot of Cheep-Cheeps. As mentioned above, Cheep-Cheeps add a little narrative to the game and while it's certainly not meant to drive any sort of larger narrative, they do provide with small little expositions and other fun little quirky topics to help with a small bit of world-building. Watch the short trailer below. (Which has some WIP footage, since I'm still doing some art-passes, etc.)

You'll also be able to fly a magic broom, read books with some cute stories my daughter wrote (which I edited for punctuation and very light corrections). There are magic potions and some other gameplay features that I'm still working on.

It's also important to note that Spookity Hollow is compatible with Play With Gilbert. One of the ideas behind the remake of Gilbert was to keep it compatible with offshoots like Spookity Hollow. This means that Customized kitties (and unicorns) are brought over from one game to the other but this also works the other way. You can customize your kitty in Spookity Hollow and bring it back to Play With Gilbert. This also means that certain features that are introduced in Spookity Hollow (such as the talking Cheep-Cheeps) will be brought over and introduced in PWG.

If you're interested in the game you can wish-list it now, The more people wish-list the game the better it will do on launch (and visibility on Steam in general) The game will launch with a discount as well, or just wait until the Halloween sale this year! So any help from the awesome community is always highly appreciated!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1739150/Spookity_Hollow/

That's It For Now
I hope you enjoyed the update and will have fun playing Fish-Run and I can't wait to share what's to come as soon as possible! Thank you all for the continued support and stay Meowsome everyone!

Hi Everyone
I'll get to the fun stuff first! Lots of new content has been added to PWG since the game's release about a week ago. These have been quietly released through a number of smaller patches that also fixed a number of issues, which I will go over at the end of the news post. I have a lot more content planned for the future but that's for another time. Let's go over all the new stuff first!

Two New Modes
I've added some new funny modes to the game that can be activated on a per player basis. You can find these options under: Game Settings / Player Options.
There you'll find these two new modes that have been added to the game.

Big-Head Mode
Big-head mode is exactly what it looks and sounds like. It's a silly little (big) addition to the game where your kitty (or unicorn) has a very large head when enabled. It looks silly, it plays silly but it's all in good fun.

Pixel Mode
Pixel mode tries to quasi-emulate old games from the PlayStation 1 Era. Nothing fancy but I thought it'd be a fun little addition, perhaps even more for parents who grew up in that era (much like myself).

New Map: Little Big Catventure

Onto the main event of this update: Gilbert's Little Big Catventure is a completely new map added to the game and completely free for anyone who owns PWG. Inspired by the old de_rats maps and the more recent Hyper Charge: Unboxed game, your kitty is a wee little bugger roaming a huge apartment. The goal is the same as in every other map but the shift in perspective is so much fun.

It's been incredibly fun to work on this level and I feel that I'll head back into it and refine and add and/or tweak little bits and bobs here and there. I believe this map is gonna be amazing for the kids as me and my daughter had so much fun playing in it.

If you or your child has any ideas feel free to share them, I'd be happy to see if I can realistically add them into the game!

Unicorn DLC Update

Some players expressed their desire to be able to customize their unicorns and I heard you. I already planned to add these features but I wasn't ready in time for release. This has now been rectified and I've added 15 new looks for your unicorn! Two eye styles and eye color options have also been added.

I love the unicorns and I have more in store for them in an additional DLC which will be more game related and separated from the current Unicorn DLC. As it stands I'm happy with them and I feel the current DLC is more than wort the asking price!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1634400/Play_With_Gilbert__Unicorn_Supporter_Pack

Bug Fixes
I've been working very hard to get rid of as many bugs as I could and currently there's only one left that soft locks player two in some instances regarding using the Cat Cam. Another small annoying bug happens sometimes when pressing the return button in the menus, which warps the player camera. A quick pause and then return to game should fix this but it's annoying and not sure how to fix it yet.

Here's a list of the things that has been fixed since release:

Main Game
  • Fixed soft-lock issues when customizing characters in coop.
  • Fixed various issues resulting in soft locking the game.
  • Kitty / Uni-sense will now always stay active if at least one player is using it.
  • Fixed missing grass in Park level.
  • Fixed showing players custom characters everywhere in the UI.
  • Added Big Head Mode for fun. (Can be toggled per player)
  • Added Pixel Mode also for fun. (Can be toggled per player)
  • Various quality of life improvements and fixes.
Unicorn DLC
  • Tweaked Unicorn material variables to make them look more like plush toys.
  • Tweaked rim-light exponent values on unicorn materials.
  • Added unicorn customization options (15 unicorn types, two different eye types and eye color customization have been added)
  • Fixed changing player character after using "Change Player" in customization settings.
  • Unicorns can now collect item rewards.
Consider A Review
A review goes a very long way here on Steam for very small indie developers. Steam's algorithm favors games that sell well and/or that are popular. PWG isn't that kind of game and I never really expected it to be, so on that front a review really helps. I think PWG - Remake is a high-quality game and has surpassed the original completely, finding an audience is a challenge.

If you or your child really enjoyed the game I would so much appreciate it if you could leave one for the game. I'm not asking for just positive reviews, although biased as I am, that would be preferred. Any review is appreciated as it offers more insight from the community as to what they liked and perhaps disliked so I can try and make the game even better!
Consider Leaving A Review

Final Words
That's it for meow! Thank you all for your continued support! It seems that the remake has been received incredibly well and I am super happy it has. It's been a lot of fun working on it and I cannot wait to share with you what will be next!

Thank you for reading and please take care and have fun with the remake!

Dear Community
It's finally time to release the game fully. Doing a remake is quite challenge. So in this section I want to talk a little bit about the old and the new and my oh my ,how far the game has come. I can't believe how much has changed over the years.

This brings back so many memories...

With the remake, I knew what I was working towards but a lot of time has passed since the original's release and I'm not the same person I was back then. My daughter was 4 years old at the time of the original game's release and she's now 8. This offered me the chance to try and make Gilbert fun for young children as well as older ones.

The underlying idea was that capitalizing on how forgiving the game is, younger gamers most likely will not care for harder jumps if they can't make it and as they grow older and more familiar, they eventually will. This is what I experienced with my daughter. She's now a bona fide Gilbert expert.

Play With Gilbert has become a mixture of role-playing and traditional 3d open-world platformers. Customization was a fun little portion of the original but I felt it was incredibly under-utilized on my behalf. I've made sure that the customization aspect is now pretty deep and players should be able to go very far into creating a unique kitty. I hope that in the future I can expand on them even more but as it is, I'm rather quite happy with how it turned out.

I truly hope this will make a lot of new memories!

What's completely new though, are unlockable items. A developer friend of my stressed the fact that adding such a mechanic would add a lot more fun to the game so I decided to give it a go. Each level now has a whole bunch of cat bells that can be collected. If a player collects 100 of them a new item unlocks. After that a selection of hats will be dropped from a different pool. These are the same hats that can be found in the levels themselves. This is done so that there's always something to drive players collecting cat bells.

If, however, players have unlocked everything and / or simply do not want to collect them anymore, you can turn on Role-Play mode. This turns the game back to how Play With Gilbert used to be. I felt it was important to keep the original gameplay alive as much as possible because not everyone wants a collect-a-thon.

I'm a huge fan of the new suburbs area...

Other new features are vehicles and other modes of transportation such as a glider. The completely new map, Down Town, is huge compared to the rest and after adding in vehicles, it was a lot of fun to just play in. Me and my daughter ended up roleplaying so much on there that I decided to add in more small mechanics to embrace that play style. Adding in doors, showers, flushable toilets and physics objects just for the fun of it. We would carry around food and drink items, settle on a spot and role-play eating and drinking, or whatever else crazy stuff we'd come up with.

So, for the past week I've slept very little and am currently super tired yet it's been a lot of fun. I've been so incredibly busy trying to tie up loose ends and fixing bugs and adding in quality of life improvements that I feel the game is at a very healthy state and I am proud to share it with everyone.

Unicorn Supporter Pack DLC
The remake is free for existing users. I did that on purpose because I value each and every one of you! However, I also need to eat and be able to keep working on this game so I decided that I would create a small DLC pack. People have asked me if they could further support my efforts and I felt that this was a nice way of offering something new and fun for existing users to purchase.

The DLC pack contains a unicorn player model which can be activated in the customization menu. Unicorns control slightly different from the regular kitties by design. They don't jump as high initially but they can hover and float upwards. They can also use their horns to make objects that are nearby hover towards them such as fishies and cat bells. Uni-sense is a variation on kitty-sense. Instead of having to hold down the button, you toggle it.

As it currently stands unicorns can not be customized much and while I do not plan to add in hats, what I do want to add are skin variations and customizable eye color. This will be added in a future update not too long from now. One of the goals with this pack was to test out playing as a different character, something I will be expanding upon in the future as well with different DLC packs.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1634400/Play_With_Gilbert__Unicorn_Supporter_Pack

The future of Gilbert
This DLC pack is testing out the water in some ways. As I've mentioned before, I want to commit to the game long-term. The way forward for me will be in the form of themed DLC packs. One of which could be "Farming With Gilbert". A completely new level would be introduced in the form of a farm with new gameplay such as having to collect chicken eggs, and adding in a playable chicken character.

I think this would add longevity to the game as I have a lot more ideas that I want to implement. Other updates would be completely free. Feature requests, bug fixes and such are obviously not tied to DLC, etc.

Missing Content
For those of you who know the original game, there seems to be some stuff missing and you're right. I owe you a beach and moon level as well as parental control options. These will be added some time after this release because I simply didn't have the time to invest on them yet. I do believe that all the new content and feature updates will more than make up for what's missing. Even without the original content this new version is already much bigger and more rich in everything. Oh, and Fish Run will also make its return shortly! Don't you worry!

I'll make sure missing levels are going to return asap for free, no DLC.

Making the levels from scratch isn't easy. I wanted to make sure they generally feel the same but are better executed and much more optimized. I go over what I think people liked in the original and think of ways to make them better or add new things to them. The park level is the closest I got to a 1:1 conversion.

A Small Tail
The free version of PWG was released about a week ago and so far has been received very well. I'm super happy with the response and gave me a much needed confidence boost in assuring me that I made the right decisions in how to update the game. So, for those who are reading this and not sure if the game's for you or your child, go check out the free version first before deciding, please!

Gilbert's Official Play Guide
I'll keep this one short, I mentioned this in the last news post but there is an official play guide right here on steam that I created. It's a tad out of date currently but also a work in progress. I will go back to the guide periodically and make sure it's up-to-date.

Bugs and Fixes
If you or your child run into any bugs or other issues, please feel free to post on the forums or join the discord channel. I will do my best to respond as fast as possible and will try to fix any bugs and/or resolve any issues you might have.

If you find anything, a screenshot or video with a descriptive report would help a whole lot.

Long Term Investment
Lastly, I want to say thank you! Over the years I've read many comments and reviews and what not and what stood out to me the most is how nice you guys have been to me and each other. Please let Gilbert remain a source of positivity. We all could use some of that in these times.

I plan to continue implementing new ideas, adding both free and DLC content and just making Play With Gilbert a fun experience for all ages!

Thank you for reading and please take care and have fun with the remake!

Play With Gilbert - Remake - | DeRaNgEr
MEOW MEOW
I'm super stoked to announce that Play With Gilbert - Remake is going to come out on May 12th, 2021! A lot of hard work has gone into this remake. A lot of new features have been added. Old mechanics have been given an update. More options to customize your kitty, more hats and other wearables. All the kitties can now take a nap, including the one you play as. Vehicles have been added, there's even a glider in some of the levels.

Pretty much every level has been expanded upon, recreated from the ground up with greater focus on exploration and role-playing. At its heart it's still the same game but I wanted to expand on how much players can interact with the world and other NPC's.

Very much like the original, this remake was created with my daughter in mind. She was 4 years old when the original game released and she just turned 8. And once again she was there from the start to help me test, give me ideas and be an inspiration. I believe that the remake will be so much more fun for kids to play. So, to celebrate the coming release I created a simple trailer to showcase a bunch of the new features.

A Small Tail
For those of you who might not have the game yet and perhaps are curious about the game, I have created a free version of the game: Play With Gilbert - A Small Tail. (Which will be released on May 5th)

This free version has all the features the full game has but it only offers the first two levels. I know that money can be tight for parents, so I tried to make sure that the free version has a lot of fun things and should offer kids a good chunk of play-time.

I have created a store page for PWG - A Small Tail which offers a solid experience for free. If anyone has any doubts about the game they can try it out first. Children can be fickle and not every child likes the same things. I want A Small Tail to showcase the overall quality the remake has to offer.

You can find the game over here:

Gilbert's Play Guide
In an effort to help guide parents and players in getting the most out of the game I have created an extensive Play Guide. This guide will be updated periodically when I add new things or find errors. You can check it out here:

Final Words
I will do a proper announcement when the full game is released! Play With Gilbert - Remake is not just a remake, it's also a long-term investment. There are still features and other mechanics from the original missing, such as Fish Run and parental control options. In the future I also hope to be able to add small DLC packs that extend gameplay and bring in a host of new mechanics, levels and simply even more fun.

For me the Journey is not over, it's about to begin again!
Thank you for reading and for all the support I've received over the years.
I really hope you and/or your kids are gonna love it!
