Leaving Early Access: Q4 2027

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Games take a long time to make, especially when they’re built by a single independent developer with no external funding. Early Access lets me continue developing Walkabout while also building the reputation and trust that only comes from releasing real work into players' hands.

Early Access also gives me a community to learn from. Players help me spot things I’ve missed, highlight what feels good, and guide what needs improvement.

This is a passion project, built with long‑term craft in mind. Every decision is made to create the best possible version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The goal is to reach the full release around December 2027, but as a solo independent developer, timelines can shift as the game grows. I keep finding new ways to improve systems, visuals, and worldbuilding, and I want to give each part the time it deserves.

I enjoy working on this project, and I’m committed to finishing it properly rather than rushing it.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Walkabout already has a clear identity and most of its core systems in place. The full version will build on this foundation rather than change it into something else. The main differences will come from added story and questing, more handcrafted world design, and overall polish across systems, visuals, and performance.

The goal is not to reinvent the game. It is to complete and refine what it already is.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Walkabout is stable, playable, and has most of its core systems already in place. The world is explorable, the visuals and lighting are established, and the core gameplay experience is solid. The Early Access version represents the foundation of the final game, with the main work ahead focused on story, questing, world design, polish, and performance.

Walkabout is not a prototype or a demo. It is the game in its early form, and it will continue to improve and become more complete.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The goal is to keep the cost fair and reasonable, with adjustments that reflect the value added over time. Walkabout will increase in price as it becomes more complete.

There will likely be small increases accompanying large changes and milestones. These changes are not intended to be large or excessive. They are simply meant to match the growth and completeness of the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is an important part of refining the game, but the core direction and identity remain consistent. Anyone who owns Walkabout can share feedback through the forums or social platforms, and I read everything.

I also watch as many Twitch streams and YouTube videos as I can. Seeing unfiltered reactions during gameplay helps me understand what feels good, what needs attention, and where the experience can be improved.”

About This Game

Walkabout is a realistic digital twin of the Cockle Creek region in southern Tasmania, recreated using real‑world data with the goal of recreating a real place as faithfully as possible.

Cockle Creek is the southernmost drivable point in Australia. It is remote and quiet, surrounded by pristine beaches and dense rainforests, with unforgiving weather. It is a beautiful place and a harsh one. That makes it an ideal setting for a realistic survival experience.

The environment is your story.

Good luck staying alive.

Walkabout was built with accuracy to real life in mind. The following features were created using real‑world data and hand‑crafted reconstruction to match the Cockle Creek region as closely as possible:

  • Actual heightmap data used for the base landscape.

  • Accurate time and date simulation using the correct time zone and calendar.

  • Dynamic lighting based on real‑world intensity, exposure, and colour temperature values.

  • True sun position calculated from global coordinates, date, and time.

  • Seasonally‑influenced dynamic weather reflecting southern Tasmanian conditions.

  • Realistic ocean tides simulated using data from the Cockle Creek area.

  • Accurate Earth rotation represented in the sky system.

  • Hand‑sculpted rivers matching their real‑world paths.

  • Roads, walking trails, driveways, and 4WD tracks shaped to match their real‑world locations.

  • Native flora representing approximately 80% of the vegetation.

  • Native fauna representing 100% of the wildlife.

Additionally, Walkabout currently features:

  • Customisable UI colouring.

  • Full gamepad controller support with customisable keybinds.

  • Customisable keybinds for mouse and keyboard.

  • Language support for 15 different languages.

Walkabout takes place in a 7 km × 7 km recreation of a real Australian location. It’s a quiet, atmospheric survival experience where you explore the land, gather what you need, and try to stay alive in a place that doesn’t care whether you make it or not.

The wildlife won’t always warn you, the weather can turn without notice, and shelter becomes essential. You’ll build, craft, forage, and hunt iconic Australian animals when you need to. Survival depends on paying attention to your surroundings.

Wafflesoft is an independent Australian studio, and Walkabout is a solo project. This is my first game, built from the ground up with a focus on accuracy, atmosphere, and long‑term craft.

Maintaining independence allows me the creative freedom to make decisions purely to serve the best interest of Walkabout. Every part of Walkabout exists because it feels right for the experience I’m trying to create.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Walkabout contains violence, looting, and survival themes. Players can kill NPCs and animals, be attacked by wildlife, and encounter corpses. The world includes criminal activity as players can enter homes to search for supplies. Cigarettes and alcohol may appear as environmental items to support a believable setting.

The mature elements focus on danger, tension, and survival.

Walkabout does not include sexual content, sexual assault, self‑harm, drug abuse, graphic gore, or any exploitative, explicit, or extreme depictions.
