What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are running a Kickstarter campaign to allow us to ramp up to full time production. We are then planning to roll out regular updates, which is better suited to the Early Access model. We will be growing the content over time until we reach the desired level where we we leave Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 6-9 months depending on the outcome of the Kickstarter Campaign.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early Access will have the base game basically done but with less content than the final version. The Early Access period will see the addition of additional features which will depend on the stretch goals reached during the Kickstarter campaign.

In the base game you can expect: Trains, bridges, 10 maps, user made map and mod support, multiplayer, buy out and merge companies, Windows & Linux releases.

Stretch goals may add in the following features depending on the outcome of the Kickstarter Campaign, which will be implemented during the Early Access phase:

Research Mechanic - A research system to allow a player to specialize and optimize their company to suit their player style.

Enhanced Stocks and Shares Mechanic - Diversify your company by trading shares in resources and industries on the map.

Unique Events - Add some spice to your game by adding random events to upset the balance.

Aircraft and Ships - More ways to make more money!

Single Player Campaign - For those who just can't get enough!
Open source - We are big fans of open source. Most of the source code will be available for modding. However if we reach this goal, we will release the whole project under an open source licence while continuing to develop the game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Trains & Things is currently unavailable, we will first be releasing Trains & Things first to the Kickstarter backers an a phased release to help grow our infrastructure before moving into Early Access.

The base game is almost complete. Currently we have: Trains, 2 maps, user made map and mod support, multiplayer, buy out and merge companies (in an unrefined state), Windows & Linux releases.

For more information see "About This Game"”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price we have set is what we expect to, or at least close too, have after we release. We encourage you not to purchase the Early Access if you are not happy with the available content until the time of release.
We will also provide a demo build that is kept up to date with the current build of the game so you can keep an eye on the state of the game before making your purchasing decision.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are currently posting regular blogs/news and development diaries to show where we are at, what issues we face and how we overcome them over at our website: ”

About This Game

The complete game

Trains & Things is done. Version 1.0 rebuilt it on Godot 4 and brought a reworked track builder,
faster and better-looking terrain, an interface that scales properly to your monitor, and a long
list of fixes. What you get is the whole game, not a roadmap.

One track, then a continent

Trains & Things is a real-time economic strategy game about building a logistics company out of
nothing, one profitable route at a time. No turns and no waiting — time is money, and every second
is one your competition isn't using.

Lay track that goes where you meant it

Building railways in most games is a fight with the tool. Here it's the best part of the game —
quick, intuitive, and it won't offend your sense of order.

Meet supply and demand

Work out what each town and industry wants across a whole map of goods, get there before anyone
else, and diversify — putting everything into one commodity is how empires fall. And run the
company, not just the trains: take a loan to fund the next expansion, then try not to sink under
the repayments before the routes start paying for themselves.

See the whole world

Strategic zoom pulls you from trackside all the way out to the entire map and back in one motion,
so you're never grinding your face along the ground — and your screen isn't cluttered with
minimaps to make up for it.

Make it your own

  • Custom maps take your company to Hawaii, Australia, Europe — the rest of the world, and
maybe even Mars. It comes down to the creativity of the community.
  • Mod support is what keeps a game alive. Games without it get played once; games with it
keep finding new things to be.

Windows, macOS and Linux — equally

Native builds on all three, made with Godot and open source tools, which is why none of them is a
port and an afterthought. Whichever one you're on, you're playing the real version.

Or bring friends

Everything above plays solo. When you'd rather not be alone, the whole game also runs head to head
or co-operatively, over the internet or a LAN, cross-platform between Windows, macOS and Linux.

Also from bitshift

After something faster? Dog Fight is our couch party game — up to 8 players, one screen,
frantic air combat. Both games are available together in the Bitshift Complete Pack.
